Early to rise

Saushan Rahman

“Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise”. This is one rhyme we have all learnt in kindergarten school. I do no disagree much about going to sleep early, but I certainly do not agree with the part of waking up early. I mean who doesn't love to wake up late. I remember when I was in school, my mom used to wake me up early in the morning during the exams (that is one reason why I hate exams). But as soon as she would leave the room, I would go back to sleep. Somehow my mom came to know of that and then she would sit in my room to make sure I didn't doze off again. I am sure more or less everyone can relate to my story. Nevertheless some of my friends had experiences that are worth mentioning.

My friend Tina just hates to wake up in the morning, and she is an ardent “exam hater” like me. So we were in class nine when she came up with a brilliant plan. One day she recorded her voice on a tape. And every morning she would turn on the tape loud, put ear plugs in her ears and go back to sleep. For the time being the plan worked, and her mom was very happy, thinking that she wakes up early in the morning to study. But as all good things come to an end, one day she got caught. Regardless of what happened subsequently the idea was worth mentioning.

Though Tina's plan failed, my other friend Sara pulled yet another destined-to-fail stunt with her mom. Her Mom would wake her up every morning and like a “good girl”, she would stay awake for a good 5 minutes. But little did mom know, her sweet little daughter would start snoring the moment she would leave the room and as a backup, had her maid servant appointed to poke her up every time she was due around her room. Not for once her mother could find out what was actually happening behind her back. Time passed by, and she kept fooling her mother. But alas, she got caught as well. As punishment the maid lost her job and the lock of her room's door was removed.

I don't think I need to say what happened to these “gem of people” in their exams after pulling their stunts. So for those who are the potential candidates for the upcoming board exams DO NOT TRY THESE AT HOME!
