Fourth Foundation Anniversary 2007 of Eastern University

The Fourth Foundation Anniversary 2007 of Eastern University was held at Shaheed Zia Auditorium of National Museum, Shabagh, Dhaka on May 28, 2007. Dr. Hua Du, Country Director, Bangladesh Resident Mission, Asian Development Bank, graced the occasion as the chief guest while Prof. Dr. Wakil Ahmed, Vice Chancellor, National University was the special guest.

The function was presided over by Mr. Abul Quasem Haider, Chairman of Eastern University Foundation. Professor Dr. Rahim B. Talukdar, Vice Chancellor, Eastern University delivered the welcome address.

Dr. Hua Du in her speech as the Chief Guest mentioned that the private universities are establishing far reaching impacts in the realm of higher education by introducing modern teaching methods as well as scientific methodologies that can ensure need based curriculum. She hoped that Eastern University would continue to ensure high quality teaching and research to produce skilled and knowledgeable graduates-fit to combat the challenging global environment.

On this occasion Eastern University honored Prof. Dr. Zillur Rahman Siddiqe for Education, Mr. Imdadul Haque Milon for literature, Mr. Mahfuzur Rahman for Electronic Media and Anzumane Mufidul Islam for Social Welfare activities.

The Fourth Foundation Anniversary, 2007 was followed by a Cultural Program organized by the Cultural Club of the university.

 

AIUB Orientation Program for Summer '06-07 Semester

American International University, Bangladesh (AIUB) organized freshmen orientation for the Summer '06-'07 semester on May 26, 2007 at AIUB Auditorium, Campus-1. A total number of 680 freshmen participated in the orientation program after qualifying through preliminary screening, written exam and viva. The students were briefed about the norms, rules and culture of AIUB in the program.

Dr Anwarul Abedin, Honorable Chairman, AIUB was present on the occasion as the chief guest while Dr Carmen Z. Lamagna, Vice Chancellor, AIUB presided over the orientation program. Prof Dr Tafazzal Hossain, Pro-vice Chancellor, Prof Dr Anwar Hossain, Dean, Faculty of Business, Prof. Dr Khorshed Alam, Dean - In Charge, Faculty of Engineering, Prof Dr Charles C Villanueva, Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Prof Dr Hasan I Chowdhury, Registrar, AIUB also spoke on the occasion. Freshmen, guardians, Faculty members, University officials and students largely attended the orientation program.

 

Seminar on Poet Ferdousi at DU

The Iranian Cultural Centre and Persian Language and Literature Department of Dhaka University (DU), jointly organised a seminar on 'Ferdousi' the famous Persian poet who is the crown jewel of the Persian literature and is cherished by all Iranians and Persian speaking societies. The DU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. SMA Faiz, was present as chief guest while the cultural counsellor of the Iranian Embassy, Dr MR. Hashemi was the special guest. Chairman of the Persian Language and Literature Department, Professor KM Saiful Islam Khan chaired the programme. Chairman of English Department, Professor Khandaker Asraf Hossain was also present.

Speakers highlighted the works, glorious career and contribution of the poet to the Persian literature.


Certificate Awarding Ceremony held at NUB

Northern University Bangladesh (NUB) arranged a certificate awarding ceremony for the students of Master of Public Health (MPH) program at the faculty of Business. Professor Dr M Shamsul Haque, Vice-Chancellor, NUM was present as chief guest while Professor Dr M Azhar-ud-Din, Dean, Faculty of Business, Professor Dr Nurul Islam, Dean, Faculty of Science, Dr GU Ahsan, Advisor, MPH program, Md Borhan Uddin, Director, ED were present as special guest. Among others Md Abul Hossain, Deputy Registrar, NUB, Dr Shahanaz Chowdhury, Coordinator, MPH program, faculty members of MPH program and administrative staff were present at the ceremony. Md Lutfor Rahman, Director, Human Resources Division presided over the program.

Professor Dr M Shamsul Haque expressed that Public Health is one of the very important issues in Bangladesh as well as in the SAARc countries. He also said that if we would able to create awareness among the mass people regarding health issues, we can prevent more than 50% diseases.


Begum Rokeya Gold Medal

Thirty-one students of the Rokeya Hall at Rajshahi University were awarded Begum 'Rokeya Gold Medal' for their outstanding results in the BSC, BA, BSS and BBA Honours examinations. Prof Altaf Hossain, vice-chancellor of the university and the pro-vice chancellor Prof Momnunul Keramat gave the awards to the students at a prize distribution ceremony function. The recipients of the awards include Sanjida Rahman, Tisir Farjana, Iffat Ara Najnin, Farzana Islam, Iren Akter, Sumia Sume, Mohjabin Ara Mukta, Shahina Akter, Nisat Sarmin, Masuma Akter, Farhana Jeba, Nusrat Zahan and Sorat Jahan. The Rokeya Hall provost Prof Nazma Afroj presided over the function held at the hall auditorium.


A day of BioTech with the young kids

The students of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (BGE) Discipline of Khulna University arranged a science discussion with the young kids of SOS Hermann Gmeiner School Khulna on 19 May. It was aimed at deciphering the fundamentals of Biotechnology to them. BioTech magazine, a publication by the students of BGE discipline of Khulna University, took this enthusiastic initiative facilitating creation of a science-inclined young generation.

The science festival was styled “BIOTECH: Prajanma Vabna.” BioTech members endeavoured to familiarize the kids with cells and technologies of Biotechnology. The program was inaugurated at 11.00 AM with poster presentation at SOS Hermann Gmeiner School Khulna campus, in which some striking and educative posters on Biotechnology was displayed. In the business session, presentation on cell biology, DNA and genes amazed the school students. They also enjoyed creative animation and documentary show on biotechnology.

After presentation session, kids participated in a quiz competition on the topics. The winners of quiz competition got the opportunity to participate in games where they were assigned to label the cell and to reorganize the puzzle of DNA structure. At the end of this session, Associate Professor Mahbub-E-Subhani answered curious questions of young kids.

At the end of program Professor Md. Raihan Ali, Head of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering Discipline and Mrs. Shamsunnahar, Principle of SOS Hermann Gmeiner School Khulna distributed the awards to the winners of quiz and games.

Workshop at Metropolitan University, Sylhet

Two-day long workshop entitled “Film in Digital Age” was held on 11th and 12th May, 2007 at the Metropolitan University, Sylhet. The workshop organized by Chokh Film Society (CFS), Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, with sponsorship by Metropolitan University was aimed at improving knowledge about digital film. Students of different universities in Sylhet participated in this workshop. The resource person at the workshop was eminent film maker Tareque Masud.

Tareque Masud mainly focused on the difference between digital film and pre-digital film in the workshop. The certificate giving program was held on 12th May at 5.00 p.m. Dr. Kabir H. Choudhury, Vice Chancellor, Metropolitan University was present in this ceremony as a Chief Guest. Tareque Masud presented a projector and two modern amplifiers as gifts to the Chokh Film Society (CFS).

1st Londonmet Inter-University Public Speaking Competition

The first ever Londonmet Inter-University Public Speaking Competition was held at the auditorium of the British Council on the 11th of May'2007. London metropolitan university sponsored it and Excluded Production House in association with Dhaka University Debating Society organised it. Eight participants from seven different educational institutes participated in the competition. The judges of the competition were Mahmud Alam Bappy, Mehedi Hasan Tamim (ex president, DU debating society) and Shamsur Rahman Parvez (ex vice president, DU debating society). The topic for speaking was “Miles to go…before I sleep”. The participants were Mohammed Rashedul Islam (Prime University), Mohammed Walid Bin Qashem (Ahsannullah University), Sanjeeb Hossain (Brac University), Sajid Mahbub (American International University-Bangladesh), Iftekharul Islam (Jagannath University), Anwar Hossain and Mofazzel Hossain Sumon (Dhaka University) and Sharifuddin Ahmed (United International University). After all the participants delivered their speeches, a quiz competition was held for the audience.T he honorable Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University, Mr. S.M.A. Fayez arrived at the venue for the prize giving ceremony. Mofazzel Hossain Sumon of Dhaka University was announced first in the competition and he won himself a personal computer. Sajid Mahbub of American International University- Bangladesh came second and won a cell phone and Sanjeeb Hossain of Brac University stood third and won a digital camera. Ten members from the audience who performed well in the quiz competition were gifted with dictionaries.

Public speaking is admittedly the most unique way of enhancing one's personal traits. It is effective in building self-confidence, essential in generating logical thinking, constructive in creating leadership. Apart from these personal benefits, public speaking has socio-cultural benefits. A public speaker addresses the society on diverse issues that are concerned with public interest. Therefore, a public speaker brings collective awareness that change negative traditions. It is in this perspective that our young talented minds need proper motivation and support to nourish public speaking culture. Educational institutions and socio-economic establishments have this responsibility to sponsor more and more public speaking contests. This is a much-required service on their part for the sake of a future logic-based society. London metropolitan university made a small attempt to polish the mind of the youngsters in the society by this competition.


Stamford University admission forms

The admission form distribution for Bachelor & Masters programs of 'Fall 2007' of Stamford University, Bangladesh has started. The last date of submitting the forms of Bachelor program is July 25, 2007 and the admission test will be held on July 27, 2007 at 3pm. The admission test result will be published on July 30, 2007 at 4pm. For direct admission in EEE, BBA program required GPA is 7.5 and GPA 7 for other disciplines. The last date of direct admission is July 23, 2007. The last date of admission of all disciplines including B.Sc. Engineering Evening Batch (Diploma Engineering completed) of Masters Program is August 08, 2007.
