Dr. Fakrul Alam, Professor of English, University of Dhaka is making a presentation on the thoughts of Edward Said at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB). The programme was organized by IUB Language Club.


Workshop on career planning at CU

Business Management Students Club (BMSC), Department of Management Studies, University of Chittagong organized a “Workshop on Career Planning” in the department on 20 April 2007. Dr. M. A. Taher, Professor and Chairman of the department, inaugurated the programme. Former Chairman Professor Dr. Mohammad Abdullah Mamun and programme co-ordinator Mr. Iqbal Hussain Rana also spoke on the occasion. In the informal session Mr. Zalal Uddin, Mr. Hussain Al Mahmud, Mr. Mahmud, Mr. Hussain M Zubaeir and Mr. Biplab Banerjee gave their presentations.


BAN Festival @ SUST

A festival of Business Administration was held at Shah Jalal University of Science & Technology on 29th May. It was a daylong program. In the first two sessions of the festival, seminar and workshop on career development was held in the mini auditorium. Three research papers were presented at the seminar. In the first session, Prof. Abdul Hamid presented his paper on “How to write a research paper”. Right after him Prof. Mizanur Rahman presented his paper on “How to write an internship paper”. Executives of Grameen Phone and British American Tobacco Company gave their speech in the first session.

In the second session Prof. Mazharul Hasan Mazumder presented a research paper on 'Internship'. After that AGM of Rupali Bank Mr. Liakat Ali Khan delivered speech about recruitment process and obstacles during the time of internship and overcoming those obstacles in banking.

Third session was a cultural session, which was arranged on the occasion of reception of the freshers, and farewell to the outgoing students of 4th batch. The cultural program was awesome where both the teachers and students performed. Prof. Hamid, Prof. Zillur and Prof. Sobhana performed from the teachers' side. Drama, comedy drama, solo songs and fashion shows were performed by the students of BBA. Most of the students of 4th batch came up on stage and danced with the vocalist Ifti (Kaiyum). After the song, outgoing students became very much emotional as they are going to leave the campus. It was really a day to remember forever for the students of Business Administration.

Anti Tobacco Inter School English Debate Contest held at USTC

University of Science & Technology Chittagong (USTC), the first private University of Chittagong city celebrates World No Tobacco Day every year. As a part of this celebration, USTC organised 1st Anti Tobacco Inter School English Debate Contest this year. It was organised in association with the anti Tobacco Organisation named "Adhunik".

The programme started on May 20 in which six English medium schools of Chittagong city took part. The participating institutions were Sunshine Grammar School Summerfields School, Cider International School, Bangladesh Elementary School, Presidency Int School, Oxbridge Int School.

Dr Jafar Alam, Pro VC (Academic) of USTC was the chief guest at the Inaugural session. Topic of the opening debate was "Intellectuals have more contribution than the labourers for the development of civilisation". Summerfields School was the winner against Presidency School. Cider Int School defeated Oxbridge Int School and Sunshine Grammar School defeated Bangladesh Elementary School in the first round. Best Speakers were-Mohaiminul Islam (Summerfields), Shamjid Siraj (Cider), Savera Mizan (Sunshine). Different sessions were conducted by Afsana Rashid and Dona Roy.

Semifinal round was held on 21st May. "Media can play greater role for the prevention of smoking" - was the Topic of first semifinal and Summerfields School defeated Sunshine Grammar School. Cider Int School was another winning team. Shafkat Fahmid of Cider became the best Speaker.

Judges of various debate sessions were-Moniruzzaman Bhuiya, Asst Professor, Chittagong University, Mahmud Hasan, Lecturer, IUB, Saifur Rahman, Badiul Alam, Lecturer, IUB, Dr SC Roy, Associate Professor, USTC, Akhter Noor (English), Kishor Mazumder (Pharmacy), Rozalynne Samira (Biotechnology), Lecturer, USTC.

Topic of the final round was-"Political commitment is more important than social commitment for the prevention of intake of Tobacco". Cider Int School was speaking for the motion and Summerfields school was against the motion. Cider International School became the Champion. Amit Bhattacharje of Summerfields School was the Best speaker. The debate was presided over by Abdullah Al Ahsan, Pro VC (Administration), USTC. The programme was finished by the expectation of a Tobacco free generation.

NSU holds seminar on Nazrul Birth Anniversary

North South University (NSU) held a book launch on 30 May 2007 at its premises on the occasion of the publication of NSU's first major research venture, a book on the life of the national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam titled "Kazi Nazrul Islam: Three Chapter" authored by the current NSU scholar-in-residence, Professor Abdul Mannan Syed. The meeting presided over by Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Hafiz GA Siddiqi, had Dr. Jamal Nazrul Islam, Professor Emeritus, Chittagong University as chief guest and Mr. Benajir Ahmed, Chairman, NSU Foundation as special guest. Leading Nazrul scholars of the country spoke on the occasion. The evening was rounded off with a musical program to celebrate Nazrul's 108th birth anniversary.

Well-known Nazrul Geeti exponents participated in the musical soiree.

IEEE Student Branch, IUT holds seminar in IUT

On Thursday, the 31st of May, 2007, IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) student branch of IUT (Islamic University of Technology) organised a seminar titled “Higher Education in Purdue University Calumet, USA” in IUT Auditorium. Professor Akram Hossain, a Bangladeshi Professor from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology, Purdue University Calumet (calumet.purdue.edu) conducted the seminar. Professor Hossain explained the educational infrastructure of Purdue Calumet and discussed the possibility of Bangladeshis going there.

Professor Hossain also gave a presentation of his paper titled “Statistical Determination of Process Capability of Industrial Systems”. The paper dealt with the statistical approach into ensuring quality products and fulfilment of their specifications in the industry. The seminar ended with a question/answer session and refreshments.

Prof. Dr. Kazi Khairul Islam, Head of EEE Department, IUT and Prof. Dr. Shahjahan Mian Tapan, Head of ITS (Instructor Training and General Studies), IUT delivered speeches in the seminar. The informatory seminar was attended by a number students, faculties and staffs of IUT.

Fresher's reception & orientation at PUB

On the occasion of fresher's reception and orientation of the 21st batch of BBA a daylong programme function was held at People's University, Bangladesh . The function was inaugurated by the Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Md. Aslam Bhuiyan. Chairman, Board of Governors of the university Md. Shirajul Islam Mollah attended the programme as chief guest and Vice Chairman Prof. Syed Abdur Razzak attended as special guest. The function was also addressed by the dean of SBA Prof. Dr. Md. Mainul Islam, Prof. Dr. Ahsanul Haque, Abdul Barek Miah, Prof. Rubaba Rahman and Asst. Prof. Rahnuma Tarafder.


Orientation at Metropolitan University, Sylhet

“Building up yourselves as competent citizens, you should bring pride for your country”, remarked Prof. Kabir H. Choudhury, Vice Chancellor of the University, while addressing the students, newly admitted into different programs, at the Orientation Program on Thursday, 31 May 2007. He said that the dreams which they brought with while entering the university must be made to come true. All students ought to utilize the facilities provided to them properly and become ideal citizens of the country, he added.

ATM Shoeb, Chairman-in-charge, Board of Governors, said that the main objective of this University is to provide the students with standard education. He requested all concerned to make the University campus free from politics.

Prof. Khandkar Mahmudur Rahman, Treasurer-cum-Registrar, said, in his welcome speech, that the students would engage themselves in the works for the shining future of the nation with the education they would get from this University. He also discussed about the infrastructure as well as academic facilities, syllabi, quality teaching etc in his speech.

Prof. Shiba Prasad Sen, Controller of Examinations, advised the freshers to abide by the rules and regulations of the University and pay attention to make good results with proper utilization of time. Prof. MA Aziz, Dean, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, said that the students would preserve the good image of this University with their behavior, performance and talent. Mr. Ataur Rahman Pir, Member, BoG, Barrister Arosh Ali, Dean, School of Law, spoke on the occasion among others.

Prof. Suresh Ranjan Basak, Head, Department of English, CM Mukammel Wahid, Head, Department of ICT, Dr. Taher Billal Khalifa, Head, Department of Business Administration, among others, attended the program. Jhuton Chandra Acharjee, Assistant Professor, Department of ICT, conducted the program.
