Cell Bazaar Inc. at School of Business, Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology

A Discussion session on 'Future Mobile Technologies and their Social and Economic Impact on Bangladesh' was organised jointly by the School of Business, AUST and CellBazaar Inc., business partner GrameenPhone. It was held on July 16, 2007 where the speaker was Kamal S. Quadir, Founder of CellBazaar. This seminar was to make the Business students aware about new mobile phone technologies and their multiple uses. Prof. Dr. Kazi Shariful Alam, Treasurer, AUST and Prof. Dr. S. M. Kabir, Dean, School of Business, delivered welcome speeches. The programme was coordinated by Saleh Md. Mashehdul Islam, Assistant Professor, School of Business.

Western College welcomes freshers

Recently, the second 'Freshmen Welcoming Ceremony' for the students of 2007-2008 batch was held on Western College campus. The Western College, which was established in the year 2006, has already successfully drawn the attention of numerous talented H.S.C. level students as well their parents for their unique rules, environment and academic feat. The college Principal Prof. Abul Hossain Mian attended the programme. The executive director of the college and managing director of Best & Less, Mr. Md. Tanvir Haq, attended as the chief guest. and Director (Marketing), Western College and Best & Less, Mr. Md. Tanzir Haq as the Special Guest, at the ceremony. The welcome ceremony was followed by a cultural programme which was enjoyed by the freshmen students and their parents.


Inter Department Debate Competition held at NUB

Grand final of Inter Department Debate Competition was held at Northern University Rajshahi Campus auditorium. The topic of the final round was “Globalization Exploits Developing Countries”. The English Department became the champion defeating Business Studies Department. Tasnimun Matin, group leader of Business Studies Department was elected the Best Speaker. The Debate Competition was organised by the Debating Club of NUB.

RU Professor joins as UGC member
Noted educationist and Senate Member of Rajshahi University (RU) Professor A H M Jehadul Karim has been recruited as member of University Grant Commission (UGC). He joined his new office from 15th August this year. Professor A. H. M. Jehadul Karim had joined the Sociology Department of RU in 1974. He also served as S M Hall Provost. He was the founder Chairman of Anthropology Department and till now he is the only Professor of the Department.

ADUST organised relief distribution

Atish Dipankar University of Science and Technology (ADUST) distributed relief among flood victims on 19th August, 2007 in Tangail district. The relief team was led by Vice Chancellor of the ADUST Prof. Dr. Anawara Begum. Among others, Registrar of the University

Prof. Dr. Kabir Hossain Talukder, Director and Trustee Ariful Bair Majumder, Adjunct Faculty Prof. Dr. Sukomal Barua, Dean, Faculty of Commerce, Prof. Dr. M. Ataur Rahman, Chairman, School of Business and Economics, Dr. Muhammad Mahboob Ali, Chairman, English Dept. N. K. Nasim and Chairman, CSI Dept. S. M. Motiur Rahman accompanied the relief team.

International School Dhaka (ISD) scored above world average

The International School Dhaka's first International Baccalaureate Diploma graduates have scored above the world average. The International Baccalaureate (IB) is the world's premier university entrance qualification accepted in over 85 countries. 21 students achieved the IB Diploma and now have taken up places at universities around the world like McGill University and Carleton University (Canada); University College London (UCL) and University of Sussex (UK); Bard College (NY) and Lafayette College (USA). An average student who is well organised can achieve the IB Diploma at ISD.


East West University relief operation

East West University carried out relief operation in two unions of Rangpur district. A team of 32 volunteers led by Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin, former governor of Bangladesh Bank and founder vice chancellor of East West University took part in the relief distribution operation in the char areas of Kolkondo and Bagdokra union of Gangachara thana under Rangpur. Prof. Anisul Haque, Syed Akhter Hossain, Registrar, Col. Shah Murtoza Ali (Retd), Board Secretary M Abdullah and a number of teachers, employees and students joined the group.


Stamford University donation for flood victims

The Pharmacy Department of Stamford University, Bangladesh has donated an amount of T. 37, 725 to Prothom Alo relief fund on August 19. The students of the department also manufactured quality oral saline and water purification tablets for the flood victims under the supervision of department chairman Dr. Abdul Ghani. Prof. Muntasir Mamun Mazumder and Prof. AK Lutful Alam Kabir of the Pharmacy Department played leading role in the relief activities.

Workshop on Environment, Health and Safety at BUET

A two-day long workshop on “Environment, Heath and Safety (EHS) Issues in Industries” was held at the seminar room, Department of Industrial and Production Engineering (IPE), BUET on 7 and 8 August. The workshop was organised by the Association of Industrial and Production Engineers (AIPE) in co-operation with the Department of IPE, BUET.

Prof. Dr. Gazi Md. Khalil, Dean, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, BUET inaugurated this workshop as the chief guest. Prof. Dr. Ahsan Akhtar Hasin Head, Department of IPE, BUET & President of AIPE presided over the inaugural session. Andrina Meier Director- HES/OE, Chevron Bangladesh, Mr. Mashi Ud Duza Corporate Safety Health & Environment Manager, Unilever Bangladesh Limited, Mr. Sharif Mahtab Dewan Sales & Application Officer, BOC Bangladesh Ltd were among the special guests at the inauguration ceremony.

There were four technical sessions on Environment, Health and Safety Management in the workshop. The sessions were conducted separately by distinguished EHS professionals from Unilever Bangladesh, British American Tobacco Bangladesh, Chevron Bangladesh and BOC Bangladesh.

Seminar at Khulna University

A seminar on “DNA Fingerprinting of Plant Genetic Resources for Identification and Improvement of Crop Variety” was held at Khulna University on first August 2007. Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (BGE) Discipline organised the seminar. Prof. Dr. Lutfur Rahman, Dept of Genetics and Plant Breeding, BAU was the key speaker and Prof. Dr. M. Rakib Uddin, honorable Dean, Life Science School, KU graced the seminar as chief guest. The ceremony was chaired by Prof. Md. Raihan Ali, Head, BGE Discipline, Khulna University.

NSU flood relief

North South University Social Services Club (NSUSS) and the Pharmacy Department separately made 32,000 packets of oral saline to distribute among the flood victims. Dr. Hafiz G.A. Siddiqi, NSU Vice Chancellor, visited the Pharmacy Lab to observe preparation of oral saline in a clean, healthy and sterilized atmosphere by the faculties, students and staff under the supervision of Dr. JMA Hannan, Pharmacy Chair.


Geography Alliance of Iowa, USA visits LOREETO School

A team from the Geography Alliance of Iowa, USA visited Bangladesh under Fulbright Hays Program 2006-07. The purpose of the project is to develop geography standards and issue- based curricula materials focusing on how people living in Bangladesh can cope up with their natural hazards.

The team, comprising University, College and School teachers visited LOREETO School on 05 August 2007. Dr Kay E Weller, Department of Geography, and The University of Northern Iowa headed the team. Professor M Shamsul Alam, Department of Geography and Environmental Studies, University of Rajshahi coordinated the program.


Relief distribution programme of The University of Asia Pacific

The students and teachers of the Pharmacy Department, The University of Asia Pacific has distributed foods, clothes, saline and water purifying tablets and other relief materials among the flood affected people. They are also preparing water purifying tablets and oral saline to distribute in Lalmonirhaat area in North Bengal.


AIUB distributed certificates of Basic Computer Training Program


AIUB organised the Basic Computer Training Program for the Bangladesh Police Force and distributed certificates among 35 police officers of different ranks. The three-week long training programme had started on 22nd July and ended on 12th August. The final year students of the Department of Computer Science voluntarily conducted the training programme. The closing ceremony and certificate distribution programme was held at the AIUB auditorium on 13th August 2007. Prof. Dr. Toffazzal Hossain, Pro-Vice Chancellor of AIUB was the chief guest at the programme.


BRAC University

Computer Club - BUCC won Prize in NSUCC Math Olympiad 2007
During the midterm week, 10 BUCC members applied for registration on July 1, Sunday for the Math Olympiad which was a part of 5th Techno Fun Fair. On July 4, Wednesday, 6 members were able to participate in the 2 hour long Olympiad during 10am-12pm. They were Annajiat Alim Rasel, Intekhab Al-Hafiz, Fahd Bin Haider, Md. Eftakhairul Islam, Nur-Ul- Arafat Shomik, and Shamim Ahmed. Fahd Bin Haider won the 3rd prize. Crest Received BRACU participants at Prize Giving Ceremony

Guest Lecture :
Dr Robert Hodgson, a consulting civil engineer and research fellow in the School of Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Exeter in southwest England delivered a lecture on 08 July 2007 on 'Housing and Hazards: mitigating disaster with stronger homes' at the Department of Architecture, BRAC University. The lecture was focused on Housing and Hazard (H&H) group's experience in Bangladesh through educational links, workshops and demonstration projects in rural areas.


Career Workshop by STEP

Student Employment Project (STEP) organized a daylong workshop titled STEP Workshop on Career Development on August 11, 2007 at Baitul Iqra, Dhanmondi. This workshop consisted of two sessions of which one was on Career Planning and the other one on latest Marketing Trend in the World.

Mr. Shahriar Amin, Brand Manager of Grameen Phone conducted the first session on Marketing Trend and Mr. Quazi M. Ahmed, education specialist and development consultant, conducted the session on career planning.

Sixty participants from different universities as well as corporate houses attended this workshop. At the end of the workshop certificates were given among the participants. Mr. Abdullah M Taher, Chairman & CEO of STEP distributed certificates. Abu Zafar Khan Taposh, Chief Coordinator of STEP hosted and Global Reach, an overseas education consulting firm, sponsored this workshop.


IUB Fresher Reception

A student of Independent university, Bangladesh (IUB) sharing her experiences at IUB with the newly admitted students at the freshmen orientation ceremony of Autumn 2007. The classes of autumn semester began on 19 August at IUB's Dhaka and Chittagong campuses.
