IUB's Flood Relief Programme

As the recent floods have left death, disease and devastation in its wake, relief work continues and several institutions have come forward to lend a helping hand.

The Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) was no exception.

The faculty, staff and administration of the University pooled together a day's salary to be donated to the victims of the natural calamity. In addition to this, the students organised their own fundraisers for the relief effort.

Late last month, the Student Council 2006-2007, under the Division of Student Activities (DoSA) at IUB staged a cultural show, featuring the musical talents of the student pool in IUB, to raise funds for the IUB Flood Relief Program.

Later the same week, Help Our People Empathize (HOPE), IUB's community-service network put up a food sale/raffle draw to contribute to this relief effort.

The student response for both events was overwhelming and the entire proceeds have been handed to the Chief Advisor's Relief Fund.

When we reached out…

Rezwana Mazumder

It was with some trepidation that we ventured into a flood relief programme under the banner of the Students' Welfare Association (SWA).

Sending the much-needed relief to the flood stranded people of Belkuchi in Sirajgonj District was the first assignment of the Students' Welfare Association. The idea was to collect money, dry food, clothes, medicine and saline. Posters requesting help went up in all corners of the college. 5 days before our trip to Sirajgonj we collected Tk. 6500, 555 bags each with 6.25 kilos of rice, half a kilo of daal, 20 packets of ORS, cheera, gur, a significant number of sacks of clothes and medicine. More arrived soon and we undertook the trip.
