Teaching- The Origin of All Other Professions

Rudmila Ahmed

We've all had our share of nightmare teachers, teachers whose classes were like eons stopped still. But we also had teachers whose mere presence enlightened not only our minds but our souls as well. And there were teachers whose presence was like the many grains of sand on the beach, they mingled, but not stood out.

Teaching is a profession from which stems all other professions. Every successful man can look behind and see at least one teacher smiling back at him who gave him the education to be where he is today. Teachers are like potters who shape students like a piece of artful pottery. Some take beautiful shape, others are misshapen and distorted.

Without a teacher, a country can not stand because as it is known, education forms the backbone of a nation. Without teachers, there is no education. A teacher not only dispenses bookish knowledge, but also valuable life lessons. Teachers are ideals. A child who first goes to school looks up to his kindergarten teacher. The teacher, if friendly, becomes his favorite topic of discussion.

When I was young, I was lucky enough to be blessed with wonderful teachers who not only educated me from the book, but from the book of life as well. They taught me all the moral virtues of an ideal human being and instilled in me a sense of righteousness. I am forever grateful to them and thankful to God for gifting me with such wonderful mentors.

A good relationship with a teacher is sometimes all a shy student might need. Just like every relationship, a relationship with a teacher is based on commitment, the commitment to uphold his teaching and do the best according to one's ability. It's not necessary that we all have to be A+ students, if a student values what his teacher has taught him, and gives the best he has, then the true purpose of education is achieved. A student learns the best and enjoys a lesson most when he and the teacher share an excellent rapport. The teacher becomes his guide, his advisor, his wise friend, and his example to follow.

However, today, teachers are slowly losing the virtues they once used to uphold as society is getting more materialistic. Many teachers don't give the proper attention to the students from whom they don't delay taking the monthly fees. Nowadays, the importance of teacher student relationship is taking a backseat, as earning money becomes the main priority for some teachers. Therefore, the youths in our society are being led astray as there is no ideal for them to follow. If the teacher who dispenses knowledge takes the class for one hour, and he finishes his lecture as soon as possible so that he can rush on to the next place he lectures, what benefit do the students gain from him?

Earning money is the main objective of any profession, and teaching is no exception to that rule. However, while doing what a teacher has chosen to be his profession, he can build lasting relationships and instill practical knowledge in the fertile minds of his pupil. That is something that we need to preserve, because after all, teaching is the origin of all profession, and the teacher serves to be the conscience of a nation.
