AIUB VC In Euro-Asia Economic Forum

The AIUB VC, DR. CARMEN Z. LAMAGNA, joined the Education Forum for Asia 2007 held last Nov. 7-9, 2007 in Xian, China as part of the Euro Asia Economic Forum. Dubbed as the "Consultative Meeting on Euro Asia Education Cooperation", it was supported by the Ministry of Education of China, co-hosted by the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and Education Forum for Asia.
The meeting included sessions on the establishment of the Euro Asia Cooperation and consultative mechanism, initiation of the education fund, role of language training in international education exchanges and launching of economic study courses among universities of the Asia-Pacific countries. The host city of Xian, home of the world famous Terracotta Warriors, is the capital of Shaanxi province and is known as one of the "Four Great Ancient Capitals of China". The Education Forum for Asia (EFA) was organized through the collaboration of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA), China Scholarship Council and the UNESCO, to respond to the need for a dynamic and higher quality of education in Asia.


MoU between George Mason University and BRAC University

A MoU was signed on Sunday, November 11, 2007 between George Mason University and BRAC University for collaboration in academic, professional and research development. Professor Jamilur Reza Choudhury, Vice Chancellor, BRAC University and Dr. Paul L. Posner, MPA Director, department of Public and International Affairs, George Mason University, USA signed on behalf of their respective sides.

Both institutions are committed to excellence in education and research and wish to enter into further agreements to promote excellence in teaching, learning and research in public administration through the collaboration of the Institute of Governance studies at BU with the George Mason Masters of Public Administration Program in the Department of Public and International Affairs and its Center for Global Studies to develop and conduct educational and research programs in governance and public administration of international standard and quality, to facilitate the professional development of staff, and the conduct of high quality of scholarship. The two bodies have discussed furtherance of these interests and now desire to record their mutual understanding in this regard.

Eid Reunion of English Department at NUB, Khulna Campus

The Eid Reunion Program of the English Department of Northern University Bangladesh was held on September 27, 2007 at the Khulna Campus. The program was organized by the students to get all students of the department together after a 10-day long Eid vacation and to share Eid experiences and feelings with one another. As part of the program, a discussion session was held with Prof. Abdus Salam, Head, English Department in the chair. Md. Mossarof Hossain Masud, Deputy Registrar & In-charge was present on the occasion as the chief guest. Md. Momin Uddin, senior lecturer, English Department, & convener of the program, delivered the welcome speech. Among others, professor A.B.M. Rashiduzzaman, Head, Department of Business Administration; Dr. Noor Mohmmad, Head, Department of Law; Md. Hamidur Rahman, Lecturer in English; Md. Mahmudul Haque, Lecturer in English and Ms. Tohmina Khatun, Lecturer in English, spoke on the occasion.

On behalf of the students, Md. Daud Ali, Tapos Pal, Nurunnahar Sumona, Tonmoy Roy, Md. Romzan Shardar shared their feelings. The discussion session was followed by a cultural program participated by the students of the university.

Computer Programming Contest in NSU

North South University recently organised a two-day national programming contest. It was co-sponsored by Prime Bank Ltd. Wg Cdr Md. Tabarak Hossain Bhuiyan, psc (Retd) senior vice president and head of Human Resources Division of the bank attended the concluding ceremony of the programme as the special guest while vice chancellor of NSU Dr. Hafiz GA Siddiqi was present as chief guest.

The meeting was about the formation of the DBA Student Association (DBA SA). For the last six months initiatives were taken by the students with the help of the teachers to form the association. Workshop on 'Use of ICT in Health Care and Agriculture Technology'

A workshop on 'Use of ICT in Health Care and Agriculture Technology' was held on 29th October 2007, in the premises of Nazir Ahmed Degree College, Beroil, Magura. Dr. Mannan Mridha, Royal Institute of Technology, KTH, Stockholm, Sweden and Dr. Hekki Teris, Karolinske Medical University, Stockholm, Sweden addressed the workshop as the speakers. The workshop, supported by SPIDER- Swedish Program for ICT in Developing Regions, focused on the uses of ICTs as a way to achieve better education and healthcare in Bangladesh.

Nazir Ahmed Degree College, founded in 1987, has emerged as a leading college in the district of Magura. At present there are about 750 students and 31 teachers in the college. The project on the Use of ICT in Health Care and Agriculture Technology' will run over a period of two years. It will focus on i) creating ICT environment and ii) building capacity among workers of education and healthcare sectors. While contacted the principal of the college Kazi Nazrul Islam (Kazi Feroz) told that ICT is a powerful means to create a new determination and direction of an individual and national achievement. He hoped that this noble effort would be a source of future inspiration for the teachers, students and also for the interested people of the locality.


IBA Executive MBA admission test at RU Dec 7

The admission test for executive MBA (Day Program) under the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) at Rajshahi University will be held IBA building at 10:00am on December 7.

Students will be able to collect the admission forms and submit it to the IBA office between 9:00am and 2:00pm till November 29.

The minimum qualification for applying for the test requires 6 points in Secondary School Certificate, Higher Secondary Certificate and honours degree.

The 90 marks written examination test will be held on Mathematics, English and Aptitude on December 07. The viva-voce of the primarily selected candidates will be held in December 12-13. The classes of MBA (Day program) course will start from January 12, 2008. This year a total of 50 students will get the chance to enrol in IBA, MBA (Day program).

Ist NDF BD - Sylhet Divisional Debate Workshop

Based on the slogan “Punnobhumitey hok juktir joyogan” SUST debating Club organized 1st NDF BD - SUST DEBATING CLUB SYLHET DIVISIONAL DEBATE WORKSHOP 07 in association with National Debate Federation Bangladesh. ETV was the media partner of this programme. More than 35 schools, colleges, medical colleges and public private university took part in the competition. A colourful rally was brought out before the competition. The inaugural ceremony was preside over by Anjuman Ara Sumi, President SUST Debating Club and inaugurated by A K M Shoaib, Chairman NDF-BD. Himadri Shekhor Roy, Md Rajib Miah and Noor e Alam attended the opening session as special guests. Renowned debaters of Bangladesh Rajib Sarker, Shafayet Hossain, Abdur Rahim and Uttom Roy conducted the workshop.


Prime University holds freshers' reception

Prime University organized freshers' reception and orientation programme for the 16th Batch (Fall Semester 2007) on 05 November 2007 at the university premises.

Alhaj Sajjatuj Jumma, Chairman of Prime Foundation and Governing Council of Prime University (PU) and Chairman of Shahjalal Bank attended the programme as chief guest while M. Asraf Ali, Vice-Chairman of Prime Foundation and member of the Government Council of PU was the special guest.

Professor M. A. Samad, Vice-Chancellor of PU presided over the function. Among others Mir Shahabuddin, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Member-Secretary of the Governing Council of Prime University, M. Arshad Ali, Registrar, Professor M. A. Jalil, Dean of the Faculties of Arts, Social Science and Business Studies, Professor M. A. Mannan Sardar, Dean of Science and Information Technology and M. Zillur Rahman, Chairman of the Department of Business Studies spoke on the occasion.

Nahid Afreen and Antara Ghose, Lecturers of the Department of Law and Tanvir Kaiser, Lecturer of the Department of English at PU conducted the programme.


Resume Book 2007 of NSU MBA

A common question among graduating groups is: how to get a job? The answer is not always as easy as job sites. It involves preparing CVs, applying for jobs and finally waiting and hoping for an interview call. NSU MBA Club has put together 128 CVs in Resume Book 2007 to help ease this process of job hunting. This is the second Resume Book to be compiled and was inaugurated on 7th October, 2007 by Mrs. Rehana Rahman, Chairperson of NSU Foundation and Dr. Hafiz G.A. Siddiqi, VC, Dr. Abdul Hannan Chowdhury Director of BBA Program & Career and Professional Developing Services of North South University. Mrs. Rehana Rahman, Chairperson of NSU Foundation mentioned that employers welcomed the “Resume Book 2006” with open arms and called our students for interviews and hired them straight away. Dr. Hafiz G.A.Siddiqi said that the Resume Book will allow corporate houses once again to discover the true nature of excellence in NSU Graduate students.

Dr. Abdul Hannan Chowdhury, Director of BBA Program & CPDS highlighted companies' appreciation at being able to find the best candidates for available positions within a short period of time. The Resume Book was and still is a unique publication that helps bring together prospective employees with companies offering suitable professional positions, he added in his expression. NSU MBA Club President Shakeef M Shafique says this Resume Book 2007 contains resumes of students in master programs at NSU including MBA, MSc. in Biotech, CSE, ETE and MA in English. It will be supplied to most of top multinational and global companies he added. Vice President Rezaul Karim Rana mentions that this effort was possible due to enthusiastic support from Standard Chartered, Singer, SMC, Power Man, DEKKO Group, Dhaka Bank and Heed International.



2nd UIU Inter Private University Table Tennis Tournament Championship 2007

This year United International University (UIU) again organized the Inter Private University Table Tennis Tournament with the help of Bangladesh Table Tennis Federation. More than 15 universities including BRAC University, NSU, EWU, IUB, Northern University, State University, Darul Ihsan etc took part in the event. Among the Private universities in Dhaka , UIU became the champion and BRAC University Runner-up. BRAC University team included:

ASK met Law students from CU

Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK), a legal aid and human rights organisation met with the students of Department of Law, University of Chittagong (CU) on November 8 2007 at Community Development Centre (CODEC) office in Chittagong. Shaheen Akhtar, Editor and Millat Hossain, Associate Editor of the Bulletin published quarterly by ASK were present on behalf of this NGO. Representatives of CODEC, journalists from local dailies and a good number of students from Department of Law, CU were present among others.

ASK's objective behind this interaction was to encourage the students from law background to write about the legal and social issues in their bulletin in order to raise common people's aware about their rights. In the meeting, Editor of the bulletin discussed how the students can get the copy regularly, how they can write to make a difference in the life of the masses. She hoped that the students who took part in this discussion would surely contribute to help make a better Bangladesh through their efforts.

Group of Debaters'(GOD) debate championship

GOD (Group of Debaters) organized an inter-club Bengali debate competition in which Institute of Business Administration (IBA) team became the champion. The participating teams were from Stamford University, North-South University (NSU), Dhaka Medical College, Group of Debaters, United International University (UIU) and IBA. It was the second inter-club debating championship organized by GOD. In the final of the tournament, IBA beat Stamford University and became the champion. The prize giving ceremony was held on 4th August, 2007 at Russian Cultural Centre, Dhanmondi, Dhaka. Renowned Professor of Economics Department of Dhaka University, professor M.M. Akash presided over the ceremony and Pro-VC of Dhaka University Professor A.F.M. Yusuf Haider was the chief guest. IBA team comprised of Fahmida Sultana, Shaikh Waheed Mahmud and Laila Farzana.

With 16 participating colleges from Dhaka, Inter college debate competition took place on the 14th and 15th of November 2007 at Shahid Bir Uttam (L) Anwar Girl's College, Dhaka Cantonment. The event was organised by Shahid Bir Uttam (L) Anwar Girl's College and Debate for Democracy.



Dr. Zafar Iqbal visits BRACU Residential Campus at Savar

Dr. Zafar Iqbal, eminent scholar and popular author and activist, and the Head of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, recently visited the Residential Campus of BRAC University at Savar. There, he delivered a lecture on Bengali Literature for the 200 or so students attending the Residential Semester this time. After the lecture, Dr Iqbal answered questions about many different topics, asked by the students, many of whom are big fans of his writing. Members of the BRAC University Computer Club (BUCC) led by two senior members Mahdin Mahboob and Choudhury Md Zahid organized a presentation titled BRAC University Residential Semester at a Glance. There, Mahdin spoke about the many different benefits that the students are getting by attending this Residential Semester. He also spoke about the picturesque campus at Savar. Fahd Bin Haider, Md. Ashraf Hossain, Md. Eftakhairul Islam and other BUCC members volunteered for this event.


Bangladesh International Tutorial IUT 1st Bangladesh Open 2007

The Bangladesh International Tutorial IUT 1st Bangladesh Open 2007 began with a bang on Thursday, 15 November. The debate competition has been jointly organised by Islamic University of Technology (IUT) and Bangladesh Debate Council (BDC) at the IUT premises. The competition will end on 20 November. A number of national and international universities are taking part. Renowned adjudicators from the USA, Australia and Malaysia will form the core adjudicator panel.

In this connection, a press briefing was held at Hotel Washington, Gulshan with the participation of Rashedul Hasan Stalin, Chair, Bangladesh Debating Council (BDC); Reaz Raihan, Moderator, IUT Debating Society; Azim Ahmed, Adjudication Director, BDC; Tanvir Ahmed Harun, Adjudication Officer, BDC; Alex Ducaloxky, Deputy Chief Adjudicator, Bangladesh Open 2007 and Claudia Newman Martin, Deputy Chief Adjudicator, Bangladesh Open 2007.


ULAB Celebrates Club Day Fall 07

The Campus of the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) celebrated its Club Day of the on-going Fall 2007 semester on November 10, 2007. 14 different clubs of the university organised various events including classical songs, debate, drama and dance. Once in every semester, the clubs of ULAB organise this 'Club Day' festival where different clubs provide information of their clubs and club activities, while some also perform on the stage. At the end of the day-long ceremony, the fresh intakes of that particular semester sign in to the different clubs according to their own choices or needs. Joining a club is mandatory for any student of ULAB and marks are also allocated for club performance.
