EWU hosts ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest

East West University hosted the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) Dhaka Regional 2007 on Saturday, 8 December 2007 at Bangladesh China Friendship Conference Center (BCFCC). BUET Sprinter team ranked top in this contest where, Fudan University of China stood second and East West University' Dream of Twilight team stood third.

Justice Mohammad Habibur Rahman, former Chief Justice and Chief Advisor of Caretaker Govt. of Bangladesh graced the inaugural ceremony as the Chief Guest. Chaired by Dr. Mohammed Sharif, Vice Chancellor East West University, the special guest of the program was Mr. Syed Ershad Ahmed, President American Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Jalaluddin Ahmed, President Board of Directors of EWU also spoke on the occasion.

The ACM ICPC Dhaka Regional 2007- was hosted by East West University in association with IBM and ACM to set a platform for the young talents to come together from home as well as the Asian region to contest in solving problems. A maximum of 83 teams from 32 different universities all over the country as well as from China participated in ACM ICPC Dhaka Regional 2007. Also 4 college- teams attended in this competition. A team of 11 judges led by Professor Zafar Iqbal of Shahjalal University made the final decision. In that contest, the system committee chairman was Professor Mozammel Haq Azad Khan. In the award giving ceremony, the Chief Guest was Md. Nazrul Islam, Chairman University Grants Commission of Bangladesh. The contest hardware partnerGlobal Brand Private Limited provided the required number of ASUS Laptops and servers along with the networking peripherals to support the contest environment at BCFCC. The event partners were Therap Services BD, Southeast Bank Limited, Prime Bank Limited and Pubali Bank Limited, ETV, Daily Jugantor, Radio Foorti, Computer Jagat, The Daily Star and The Daily Ittefaque.


BRACU Film Club

On Monday, 26th November, 2007, BRACU Film Club had its first general body meeting. The club introduced a new dimension in this fun filled and lively meeting attended by almost all the regular members. The entire event was very enjoyable. A presentation by Rajed and a movie clip by General Secretary, Sameer, were shown to the freshers to let them know about the activities of the club. Rehnuma madam, honorable adviser, started the proceedings by giving a brief speech about the club. Our mentor, Mr. Ahsan, gave concluding remarks. A surprise performance by D-RockStar Salman and Shaibal was arranged at the end of the meeting.


IEEE organises seminar

IEEE recently organised a seminar on OPEN SOURCE AND OPEN CONTENT for the students of EEE at Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology. A. A. Munir Hasan, Co-ordinator of Bangladesh open source network and National project co-ordinator was the main speaker. Brig. Gen. (Retd) M. A. Hussain, head of the EEE department and prof. Dr. Abdur Rahim Mollah delivered welcome speeches.


Workshop on Business Debate

School of Business and Economics of Atish Dipankar University of Science and Technology (ADUST) arranged a day long workshop on Business Debate on 4th December, 2007. The workshop was presided over by Prof. Dr. M. Kabir Hassan Talukder, Registrar and Chief guest was Prof. Dr. Anwara Begum,Vice Chancellor, ADUST. Welcome address was given by Prof. Dr. Muhammad Mahboob Ali, Chairman, School of Business, ADUST. Among others, Nazrul Islam Khan, Asst. Prof. and BBA co-ordinator, Badal kumar Ghosh, Asst. Prof. Parvez Md. Asheq, Guest Faculty, Jannatul Mawa Nupur, lecturer and Shiekh Sharmin Shamaly, lecturer also spoke in the workshop. Later on Vice Chancellor of the University distributed prize among the participants. More than 60 participants took part in the workshop.


EW MBA Evening: An Evening to Remember

On 30th November, the MBA evening was organized by East West University MBA Club at China Bangladesh Friendship Conference Center from 5.00 pm to 11.00 pm. The program started with the Welcome speech of Dr. Monowar Hossain Mahmood, MBA Club Moderator, followed by speech of Professor Md. Sharif, Vice-Chancellor, East West University, Mr. Jalaludding Ahmed, President, Board of Directors, East West University, and vote of thanks by Mr. Rasheduzzamn, President, EWU MBA Club. The first part of the program consisted of song and recitation, performed by the students of MBA, EMBA, and MBM programs. A short drama was performed on “SIDR” by East West University Cultural Club. Another attraction of the program was ramp modeling, performed by the boys and girls of the MBA program. In the last part of the program, three renowned and professional singers, Khalid, Sonia and Tutul rendered some marvelous songs.



Orientation programme at BUBT

The orientation ceremony of the newly admitted students of Graduate Programme of Bangladesh University of Business & Technology (BUBT) was held on December 01, 2007. Mr. Saadat Husain, Chairman of the Public Service Commission of Bangladesh was present as the chief guest while Mr AFM Sarwar Kamal, Chairman of Syndicate of BUBT was the special guest on the occasion. Among others, Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Md. Ali Azam and Treasurer Md Shamsul Huda FCA spoke on the occasion.

World AIDS Day observed at ULAB

University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) observed World AIDS day 2007 on its campus in Dhanmondi. The programme was jointly sponsored by UNFPA. The event began with forming a human chain in which over 400 students took part. Then a seminar was held in the auditorium. Mr Dan Odallo, Country Coordinator of UNAIDS attended as the chief guest. Dr. Fadia Sultana of Save the Children (USA) and Mr Afzal Hossain of Matra spoke on the occasion. ULAB Vice Chancellor Prof. Rafiqul Islam gave the opening speech. The event was followed by a concert performed by band called Parthibo.

 

Department of Drama and Music raises fund for SIDR Victims

The Department of Drama and Music, University of Dhaka, raised Tk. 40,000 for the cyclone-affected people while commemorating the second annual Drama Week from 18th of November to 27th at TSC. The fund of Tk. 40,000 was raised with the money collected from selling tickets and handed over to the Vice chancellor Professor SMA Faiz for the Chief Advisor's Relief Fund on 5th December 2007. Pro-vice chancellor of Dhaka University professor A F M Yousuf Haider, Proctor of Dhaka University A K Feroz Ahmed Department Chair Dr. Md. Israfil, and Assistant Professor Dr. Md. Saiful Islam were present.


Rajshahi Divisional Debate Workshop

'Juktir sanito srotey mukhorito hok borandravumi" with this slogan on 07 Dec. "Venn NDF BD 1st Rajshahi Divisional Debate Workshop-07 " was held at Rajshahi Medical College auditorium. The day long debate workshop was organised by GOLD (Group of Liberal Debaters, Rajshahi University) and Debating Forum, RMC. The workshop was done in association with National Debate Federation Bangladesh (NDF BD) .The program was sponsored by Benn mobile. The Daily Star and ETV were the media partners of the workshop.

About 700 debaters of Rajshahi division took part in the mega event. The debate workshop also included a 'No to drug rally,' script writing, NDF BD format plancet debate,certificate distribution etc.

In the inauguration session, Asit Kumar Mukutmoni, joint secretary and additional divisional commissioner, Rajshahi, attended as chief guest. Prof. Dr. Fazlur Rahman, principle of RMC attended as chief guest in the closing ceremony. Naimul Islam Khan, editor of the Bengali daily Amader Somoy and Star Campus reporter Feeda Hassan Shahed were present as special guests in the workshop.

The program was presided over by A.K.M.Shoaib, chairman, NDF BD.
