Bangladesh: My Country, My Pride

Tabassum Mokhduma

Mong the social evils that bother me most is the pervasiveness of violence against women in Bangladesh. Acid throwing, killing for dowry, early pregnancy, divorce at will and rape are now everyday news, and it seems to me our society as a whole has become quite insensitive towards the crimes, criminals and the victims.

According to the statistics of the Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK), from 1st January - 3rd November 2007, a total of 505 women got raped. Just imagine! If 505 women have been victims of rape this year, then can we figure out how many women got raped since liberation? It's a matter of great shame that though we are the citizens of an independent country, we are not safe enough. In her book “Against Our Will: Men, Women and Rape”- Susan Brownmiller puts the number of women raped by the Pakistan military and their local collaborators between 200,000 and 400,000. Did they care to see that even after 36 years of independence we failed to ensure women's protection? In fact, we not only failed to prevent rape, but we also failed to prevent acid violence, domestic violence, violence instigated by fatwa, eve teasing, dowry related violence…a never-ending list. Though all the successive governments took different initiatives to stop such violence, they haven't been successful.

I love my country and that is why I want to see it placed in the best position among other great countries of the world. I want to see my Bangladesh in such a height that I can proudly say, “Look, this is my country”. I want to see that Bangladesh is such a country where women are secure enough to work in the men's world, where rape and other violence against women would be a thing of the past. I believe that ultimate ray of light will definitely help change my country and make the world say “Look, this is what a country should be like”.

I don't know whether my wish would turn into reality or not, but I don't want to stop dreaming, I don't want to lose hope, I don't want to stop trying to change my beloved Bangladesh. Because it's my country, my pride. I don't want anyone to raise fingers at my pride. It's not possible to change my country in a day, so it will take time. But I'm sure my dream will one day come true to stun the entire world.
