Seminar at Stamford University Bangladesh

The Department of English, Stamford University Bangladesh organized a day long seminar on “Aspects of Language and Literary Studies” at the auditorium of Siddeswari Campus on 13th January, 2008. The opening ceremony was presided over by Prof. Syed Anwarul Huq, Chairman of English Department while Prof. Dr. K. Maudood Elahi, Pro-Vice Chancellor of the university was present as the chief guest and inaugurated the seminar. Also Prof. Hasan Taufiq, Registrar and Md. Morshed Hossain, Member, Board of Trustees of Stamford University Bangladesh were present in the opening ceremony as the Guests of Honour.

Participants from Jagannath University, BRAC University, Daffodil International University, Presidency University and Stamford University presented 14 papers on “Aspects of Language and Literary Studies” at the seminar. There were three presentation sessions of which two were on Language and one was on Literature. The sessions were chaired by Prof. Syed Anwarul Huq (Stamford University), Begum Shahnaj Sinha (Dhaka University) and Dr. Nuzhat Amin (Dhaka University). The seminar ended with a drama titled “Doctor Fottas” (dramatic adaptation of Christopher Marlowe's Doctor Faustus) presented by the students of Stamford English Department Drama Society (SEDDS).


5th Anniversary of Akakar in Chittagong University

Akakar is a shuttle train oriented cultural and social organization that celebrated its 5th anniversary on 15th January. It is a unique organization that sings on the shuttle train to break the monotony of journey to and from Chittagong city. The program started with a rally. A blood donation program was also held on Chittagong University campus on the occasion.

Later a cultural program was inaugurated by Professor Gazi Salauddin, dean of social science faculty. The cultural progarm was sponsored by MMS and media partner was Shuprovat Bangladesh and Rdio Today. In the end Akakar threw a grand dinner party for the guests.

The organization was the creation of Mahfuj, Jewel, Rokon, Mamun, Shahnaz, Samrat, Asik, Misu, Saikat and their friends and well wishers. It was done with the sole aim to provide a platform for CU students to express their creative talents and versatility as extra curricular activity. In the beginning Akakar was only a cultural organization but later they spread their branch in cultural, social, social welfare and other activities. The present member strength is more than 150.

Akakar takes pride in calling itself a patriotic group. They never sing Hindi or English songs.

UODA Week 2008

The University of Development Alternative (UODA) organized a weeklong cultural program titled “UODA Week 2008” from 19 to 25 January. The founder and president of UODA Mr Mujib Khan inaugurated the program that included Nazrul geety, Rabindra shangeet, classical music, patriotic and folk songs, modern songs, speech competition and Bangla and English debate, wall magazine, art and photography exhibition.

The closing ceremony was held on 25 January on Abahony Play Ground, Dhanmondi, with Prof Sirajul Islam Chowdhury gracing the occasion as chief guest. Eminent journalist and editor of Prothom Alo Mr Matiur Rahman attended as special guest. Prof Emajuddin Ahmed, Vice Chancellor UODA presided over the event.


Seminar on Career Planning at Khulna University

Citycell and Business Administration Discipline of Khulna University jointly organized a seminar on “Career Planning”. The seminar was held at the university auditorium on 6th January 2008.

The Human Resources Director of Citycell, Mr. M. Zulfiquar Hussain conducted the session. At the beginning of the session Mr. Hussain gave a brief overview on Citycell and also discussed about the recent developments of the company.

In this lively and interactive presentation, he gave the students a roadmap on career planning. He mainly emphasized the various steps of career planning and also outlined the aspiration, competencies and leadership factors that are required for the business graduates to become successful in professional life. After the discussion a question - answer session took place where Mr Hussain responded to various questions of the students.

This seminar was chaired by Mr. Mehedi Hasan Md Hefjur Rahman Associate Professor of Business Administration Discipline, Khulna University. Among others Mr. Mamunur Rashid Head & Dean, Business Administration Discipline, Khulna University, Mr. Md. Khashrul Alam Assistant Professor, Business Administration Discipline, Khulna University and Mr. Md. Tariquel Islam Regional Sales Manager of Khulna, Citycell were also present in the seminar. Mr. Mehedi Hasan Md Hefjur Rahman gave special thanks to Citycell for co-hosting this event.


EBL “Education Finance Pack” for Students Launched

Eastern Bank Ltd. has launched “Education Finance Pack” comprising of three types of loan facilities for the students to help obtain their education at any institution either at home or in foreign countries. Any employee, businessman, self-employed individual is eligible to avail these loan schemes for higher education of his children or of his own. Applications for the loan will be received at all branches of EBL.

The “Education Finance Pack” was formally launched by the Managing Director & CEO, EBL, Ali Reza Iftekhar in a press briefing on Tuesday, January 22, 2008 at a local hotel at Dhaka. Mamoon Mahmood Shah, Head of Consumer Banking; Mahabbat Hossain Chowdhury, Head of Strategy and Business Development; Nazeem A. Choudhury, Head of Marketing, EBL were also present, among others, on the occasion.

The loan schemes are as follows :
01. Eduloan Secured This loan can be availed against security deposit. The maximum loan amount is 95% of the deposit and repayable in 12 to 60 monthly installments. No personal guarantee is required. Advance/ partial pre-payment is allowed.

02. Eduloan Unsecured This loan can be availed without any security deposit. Maximum amount up to BDT 10 lakh or 10 times of gross monthly income of the applicant. The loan amount will be up to 80% of the summation of tuition fee, admission fee and other expenses, and is repayable in 12 to 60 monthly installments. Advance / pre-payment is allowed.

03. Eduline It's a credit facility against security deposit. Interest will be charged against utilization only. Advance / pre-payment is allowed. This facility will be provided for one year and renewable every year. No personal guarantee is required.


Taylor's University College scholarship program

Taylor's University College, on the 9th January 2008 hosted a daylong event highlighting Programs & conducting Scholarship Interviews. The event took place at Hotel Sarina, Banquest Hall (Boithak), Level 4, Banani. Whole session took place in a friendly environment where Students having prior Appointment for Scholarship Interview attended the first half and walk-in Students participated on a one to one counseling session with Taylor's officials. The Event was a successful one intend based on the feedback of the participating Students and Taylor's obtained good number of 'Positive Leads'. In fact, satisfactory outcome has prompted Taylor's to declare hosting second event in March 2008.


IUB celebrates 15 years with its Spring Orientation

The Independent University, Bangladesh organized orientation for its newly admitted students to the Spring 2008 semester on Saturday, January 19, 2008. Incidentally, the University is also celebrating its 15 years of existence with the commencement of the Spring Semester In all, 521 students were finally selected for admission out of a total number of about 1500 students.

Every semester a growing number of students are drawn to IUB for its unique curricula which emphasizes on liberal education for all categories of students. The Vice Chancellor Dr. Bazlul M Chowdhury and Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr. Omar Rahman along with Directors of different Schools and senior faculty members emphasized on this unique character of IUB curriculum, which is already globally acclaimed. Students and faculty members from renowned universities of USA are drawn to IUB for its global nature and at the moment IUB is hosting more than 50 students from USA.

Pro Vice Chancellor, Prof Omar Rahman welcomed the newly admitted students and spoke on the distinctive nature of IUB education which provides a wide liberal arts background for all students specializing in various disciplines. Vice Chancellor, Prof Bazlul Mobin Chowdhury congratulated the students on their success in becoming a member of IUB student community and called upon them to come out as the best professionals in their fields with a wider background of life and society which IUB curricula provide. Ms Lima Chowdhury, Asst Registrar, conducted the ceremony.

The students were introduced to the Directors of the Schools, Heads of Departments and the Registrar of the University. They spoke briefly on their academic offerings. Following it, the students viewed a multimedia presentation on the study programmes, future prospects and facilities available for students at the University. On the occasion, the venue wore a festive look with festoons and banners flying.

Battle of Minds
Khulna University Champs

The Grand Finale of long awaited Battle of Minds 2007 organized by BAT was held on Thursday, 24 January at Radisson Water Garden Hotel, Dhaka. Total seven (7) teams fought it out at the finale. The final round started at 9:30 and presentations were done from 10 AM till 1 PM. Results were announced at 2:30 PM and the awards giving ceremony was held at 3 PM. The program came to an end at 3:30 PM.

Star Campus has been covering this event from day one as it involves getting students enthused in coming up with their best in a tough competition. The competition provides students the opportunity to discover their hidden potential in problem solving and displaying traits of leadership.
