Drishty Debate for generation next

Wonderful! A little girl of class four was asking the opponent “Don't we need modified law and its proper enforcement for preventing Drugs?” Really, Amazing! These talented young debaters are being discovered regularly in the Star Campus-Drishty Debate for Generation next being sponsored by The Daily Star .

I had an opportunity to attend the final round of Summerfields School & College, Chittagong. I presided over the debate as Speaker of the parliament. One of the most remarkable features of the competition was the teams were named: Abul Fazal, Abdul Haque Choudhury, Abdul Karim Sahittya Bisharod, Prof. Salma Chowdhury, Dr. Enamul Huq, Sucharit Chowdhury- some renowned personalities of Ctg.

Participant Debaters were -Prof. Abdul Huq Chowdhury team (i) Tehaeem Chowdhury (ii) Sakib Mahmood (iii) Falah Galeeb. Prof. Salma Chowdhury team-(i) Nahid Akther (ii) Sumaiya Islam (iii) Motaharul Islam.

Prof. Abul Fazal team-(i) Fabiha Hoque (ii) Rackiim Dhar (iii) Nusrat Shamim Chy. Mahabubul Alam group- (i) Ahbabul Hoque (ii) Nazma Islam Rency (iii) Zeba Maimuna Miskai.

Dr. Anamul Huq team (i) Sumit Dutta (ii) Farah Galeeb (iii) Marthina Twinkle Daniel. Abdul Karim group- (i) Menhaj Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury (ii) Mozaddedul Karim (iii) Ontika Deb Nath

Prof. Md. Khaled team-(i) Shourav Dutta (ii) Himadri Mazumder (iii) Mojahrul Islam. Shucharit Chowdhury team (i) Tanzina Sultana Ivy (ii) Md. Fahadul Karim (iii) Adit Barua

Theme of the competition was “No for Drugs, Yes for Logic” through which students raised their voice against logic. They promised to avoid and prevent other from taking drugs.

Biplab Bhattachariya, Benazir Hannan, Alfi were the judges of various round.

The finalist teams were from class V and Class IX. Falah Galeeb was awarded as the best speaker. Motion of the house was-“Social commitment is more important than political commitment for the prevention of Drug”. Abdul Hoq Chowdhury team became the Champion.

Judges of the Final round were Abdus Samad Himal, President, CUDS, Tazrian Shahid, Executive, IUB Debate club, Syed Rifat Faruk, AGS, Bangladesh Debate Fedaration, Alok kumar Dev, Senior teacher, Summerfields School.

Oswald Gonzalves, Moderator, Summerfields Debate Club was the Coordinator of the competition.

The Competition was inaugurated by Narayan Chowdhury, Principal of the School, on 26th January.

The topic of semifinal round was- Media can play the greatest role for the prevention of Drug, Enforcement of Law is mainly needed for anti Drug Movement.

Nasiruddin Choudhury, Chairman, Chittagong Stock Exchange Ltd. was present as chief gust of the closing session and distributed prizes among the winners. Special guests were Asif Iqbal, System Engineer, Radio Foorti, Daypayan Barua, Staff Reporter, The Daily Star, Masud Bakul, President, Drishty, Ctg, Molly Chowdhury and Vice Principal, Summerfields School. Closing session was conducted by Afsana Toma.

Summerfields School has a tradition of Debate. They were the champion team of Drishty Inter School Debate Contest 2005 and Runner up in 2006. It is one of the pioneer English Medium Schools of Chittagong City. As they follow the Edexcel curriculum, they also believe in Bangladeshi culture. They celebrate Pitha Festial, Ekushey February, Bijoy Dibosh, Independence Day and Pahela Baishakh every year. Students of this school showed excellent performance in O & A level exams.

Summerfields School wants to stand beside the debaters for the establishment of an enlightened society.
