Dhaka University Remembers
the Martyrs

Khalilur Rahman

On the eve of the 37th Independence Day we recall with pride the sacrifice and contribution of Dhaka University in the Liberation War that brought us our independence. On the campus some signs and evidences of massacre have been preserved and they seem to be alive to us. It has been possible simply because of the sincerity, willingness, efforts and endeavours of the teachers and students of the university.

We feel proud that our teachers and students led every movement on our journey towards liberation. Events like the Language Movement of 1952 and hoisting of the first national flag in 1971 took place on DU campus. We can say that teachers encouraged students and instilled the dream of freedom and value of democracy in them despite threats and intimidation.

Today, we get inspired by the sculptures commemorating our Liberation War. They remind us of the glorious history of our long struggle since the forties that culminated in the ultimate war with the enemy - Pakistani army. The murals and frescos, wall-art and street-art done by the students of Charukala make the onlookers conscious and aware of our heroic past.

The students and teachers of DU still protest and fight fascism, enemies of democracy, fundamentalism and many other social evils. So our campus is undoubtedly an altar where martyrs are always hailed and remembered by the young generation.
