Celebrating Women's Day at NSU!
Sabrina Hasan Shoily
I’m tough, I'm confident and I know exactly what it takes to be a Woman of Today!”
These were the words written on the posters and banners of the Women's Day celebration in NSU which made us feel the spirit of being a woman while attending a show organized by the NSU English Club. The show, first of its kind, was held on the university premises to mark the International Women's Day 2008.
Dr. Hafiz G. A. Siddiqi, the Vice Chancellor, Dr. Deena P. Forkan, Professor of English Department; Dr. Jahanara Begum, Head of Health & Education, Nipsom; Ms. Humaira Khan, designer & founder of boutique 'Anokhi' and Mrs. Shabnam Shameem, founder of Shawarma House attended the program.
President of the English Club, Nandita Afzana Khan, started the show with a small speech which was followed by speeches of the guests. They shared their experiences of life and talked about womanhood as they perceived it. They told the audience about what motivated and helped them to be what they are today and how they have crossed the journey of life so far.
After their speeches the guests were presented with gifts from the English Club as tokens of appreciation. Soon after, a musical show was presented.
NSU's very own band, 'Ionic' performed in the program along with Shehrina Kamal and Elita Karim. Shehrina enthralled the audience with “You're still the one”, “When you say nothing at all” and “Leaving on a jet plane”. Then there was a surprise in the form of a song when the treasurer of the English Club, Shama Islam sang the song “Ek paaye nupur amar” along with Sunny of Ionic. Next in line was Elita who presented songs like “Kothay”, “Shey je boshe achhe” “Ami shunechhi sheydin tumi” etc. After the ladies sang, Ionic performed songs like “Yellow”, “Broken” and “Iris”, which were enjoyed by the teachers and students alike.
Ms. Sabahat Jahan, the faculty advisor of the English Club, conducted the entire show. The whole ambience of the show was very cheerful, the dress code for the girls; hot pink and black definitely made it even more attractive! The English Club's efforts indeed paid off pretty well. Not to mention the cute Women's Day badges and discount coupons for Shawarma House for the guests which meant, none returned home empty handed!
