UIU Independence Day Cricket Tournament

A cricket tournament was organised by the Sports Club of United International University (UIUSC) to celebrate the month of Independence. The tournament started on the 1st of March and the final match was held on 29th March at the BUET playground. It was a Twenty-20 tournament. In total, four teams participated in the tournament. Two of the teams were from the School of Business and two from the School of Engineering. The participating teams from the School of Business were, Business Blue and Business Orange, and the participating teams from the School of Engineering, were Engineering Blue and Engineering Orange. The match ended with Business Orange winning the tournament by 21 runs. The Championship Cup was handed over to the Captain of Business Orange by UIU's honourable VC, Professor Dr. M. Rezwan Khan. Outstanding batting performance throughout the tournament won Aurnob the awards of man-of-the-match and man-of-the-series. Pro-Vice Chancellor, Dean, School of Business, Registrar, DSA, CSA, Moderators, Faculty Members and students were also present during the prize-distribution ceremony.

CUET convocation held

The 1st convocation of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) was held on 8th April 2008. President Iajuddin Ahmed, Chancellor of the university, presided over the program while Justice Muhammad Habibur Rahman, former chief adviser to the caretaker government was present as the convocation speaker. Education and Commerce Adviser Hossain Zillur Rahman was the special guest of the occasion.

A total of 1,403 graduates and post-graduates from four departments received certificates in the convocation. Of them, 1,398 graduates are from Civil Engineering, Mechanical and Electrical and Electronics departments of 1996-2002 sessions and Computer Science and Engineering Department graduates of 1998-2002 sessions.

CUET Engineering Faculty & Dean Prof Mohammad Saiful Islam, Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty & Dean Prof Aunil Kanti Dhar, Convocation Information and Publicity Committee Chief Prof Paritosh Kumar Sadhukhan, Registrar Mohammad Wahiduzzaman, Examination Controller Dr Asaduzzaman Ukil and Comptroller of Accounts Mohammad Masudur Rahman were also present at the conference.

Workshop Held at IUB

Bangladesh (IUB) held a workshop on the strengths of successful development projects and their use of effective communication strategies on the 20th of March 2008.

The workshop was hosted by Miss Christina Rozario, Deputy Director of Impact Foundation Bangladesh (IFB). The goal of this foundation is to prevent avoidable disability. This foundation also has a floating hospital called 'Jibontari' -The Boat of Life and two health clinics-one at Chuadangha and another at Meherpur. Miss Rozario works to generate awareness and teach the people about different diseases and the preventive methods.

The daylong workshop was coordinated by Miss Monami Haque and it was a part of the course-Rural Development and Communication. The students were assgined to make groups of four members and were given articles on development projects.Later the students were asked to identify the strengths of those development projects and discuss them with Miss Rozario.

JU VC seeks co-operation from everyone

The newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of the Jahangirnagar University Professor Muniruzzaman has sought cooperation of the teachers, syndicate members and officials of the University for creating a congenial academic atmosphere on the campus. Since taking over charge of the Vice-Chancellor on March 25, Professor Muniruzzaman has been holding dialogue with them to seek their support and suggestion for achieving this goal. "We must keep the university free from violence and indiscipline", he stressed during his talks with senior teachers and senate and syndicate members of the University. The VC said he would give more emphasis on research activities and infrastructural development of the University. Maintenance of peaceful atmosphere on the campus would also be one of his main tasks, he noted.

RU inter department cricket tournament

The final match of the Inter department cricket tournament of Rajshahi University (RU) was held at the varsity's stadium on last Sunday. In the match, Management department defeated Marketing department by 22 runs. To mark the great win, teachers and students of Management department brought out a grand rally from the BBA faculty. After parading through the main streets of the campus, the rally ended in front of the Management Department.

In the final match the management department scored 91 runs in 27.4 over while marketing department scored 69 runs in 24.5 over. The game was based on 30 over. Md. Sohel Rana of Management got the Man of the Match trophy at the final match. After the match, a prize giving ceremony was held with the Pro-VC of RU Prof. Mamnunul Keramot attending as the chief guest. The inter department cricket-2008 had started on Feb.23 in which 43 departments of RU took part.

Meet the Leaders at AIUB

Meet the Leaders is an AISEC initiative held regularly to bridge the gap between university students and corporate heads and leaders. To her credit Shabnam Huq, the disarmingly youthful Nokia Emerging Asia PR and Communications Head was a breath of fresh air. When listening to her it was easy to forget that this was a woman, who has worked for the World Bank, Chevron and British American Tobacco, in Regulations.

During the Question and answer session she was both attentive and to the point. Even when I didn't understand what the question was she understood and put both the questioner and everyone else in the room at ease with her answers. Equally graceful under pressure when asked difficult questions instead of evading them, she answered them head on not shying away.

There was more than once she amused the crowd and said something which was so true and yet so hard to admit that she elicited laughter and applause. Coming away from the seminar at the end when asked how she felt and what it was like talking to these students, she smiled and said “it was wonderful connecting to the next generation. I spoke about it during my talk but when I came back from university abroad I was a completely different person and it took me 10 years to figure who I am and what I want to do. It's great to be able to help the next generation get there that much faster and afford them possibly the candour many from my generation didn't get in sessions like this.”

She later also spoke of how Bangladesh is opening up and becoming an exciting place to do business and work. A credit to this is the fact that the majority and lions share of Nokia Emerging Asia's sales, which consists of 5 countries, is from Bangladesh. Indicating in her opinion that Bangladesh is upwardly moving and wants to change and improve. “Just look at any of the younger generation graduating now and tell me what you see, every single one of them have possibilities written on their faces and that is exciting not only for them but for me because it means change for the better.”

Fund Raising Ball by PTA, ISD

The Parents Teachers Association (PTA) of International School Dhaka hosted their annual Fund Raising Ball at the Radisson Hotel recently. The ISD PTA is a voluntary organization of teachers and parents, that in addition to assisting the school authorities in various ways, also engage in charitable work. Mr. Stephen Murray, CEO of ISD spoke on the occasion. Mr. Richard Tangye, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Council of International School (CIS), was also present during the event.

Ms Lubna Hussain, President of ISD PTA, affirmed helping school children as an important agenda of the PTA and joined the guests of honor in handing over a check of BDT 2 lac to 'Save the Children UK' towards reconstruction of SIDR devastated community schools in Shoronkhola, Bagerhat. Mr. Suman Senguypta, Country Director of Save the Children UK, received the check.

Road Show on “MTO Recruitment” at EWU

BRAC Bank Limited made a presentation on “MTO Recruitment” on 6 April at East West University. Ms. Tahniyat Ahmed Karim, Vice President & Head of Human Resources, BRAC Bank Limited, conducted the seminar.

S I Nusrat A Chaudhury, Associate Professor of Business Administration and Head of Career Counseling Center, Mr. Nahid Hassan Khan, Assistant Professor of Business Administration and Deputy Director of Career Counseling Center and other faculty members, graduates and graduating students attended the seminar. After seminar the students participated in questions and answer session.

Accomplishment of a Bangladeshi Student in Canada

Md. Ashiqur Rahman, a former student of Perdana College, Dhaka Ashiqur completed his first two years (60 credits) at Perdana College before leaving for Acadia University in January 2006. Perdana is known for its excellent quality of education and pathways to award winning foreign universities with guaranteed 100% transferable credits.

He is currently in his Final Semester at Acadia University, Canada, and will graduate by April 2008 with a major in Computer Science, a major in Mathematics (with Statistics), and an honors in Computer Science. He would be the first student in Acadia University's nearly 200-year history to graduate with such an impressive program combination, with so many accomplishments, and in such a short time.

He has completed 4 months of university research, 4 months of research in collaboration with IBM, Microsoft, and few other online research labs, and 4 months of internship at IBM Software Development Lab.

He has worked in multiple online research labs (including IBM's research) for Project PAWS (Petroleum Applications for Wireless Systems) to develop Artificially Intelligent Highly Energy Efficient Data Routers, Routing Algorithms and Protocols (AIEEDRRAP) for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) in (Offshore) Petroleum Industry Settings consisting of Radio Harsh Environments (RHEs). This is a high-profile Canadian research involving more than 15 US & Canadian top universities (including MIT & Princeton).

He has so far published 1 paper in IEEE journals and 8 papers in IEEE conferences and workshops, which is an outstanding achievement for an undergraduate.

Star Campus - Drishty English Debate Workshop

To help the development of debate among the school-goers of Chittagong, an English debate workshop is to be held on 13th of April, 2008. The training on Worlds and Asians Debate will be ceremonially conducted at Theatre Institute Chittagong. The trainers for the session are reknowned debaters from Dhaka, who are experienced on Worlds and Asians debates. They are: Mr. Mabroor Waseef and Rishat Sharif from IUT, and Nayeem Kashem and Sinha Ibne Humayun, members of the record breaking team of Worlds '08 from North South University. They will teach the format, presentation and debating techniques of Parliamentary, Asians and Worlds debates. The associate sponsors of the workshop are Mastermind International School and International Islamic University Chittagong (IIUC).
