Departmental Basketball Teams Rumbling the Court of DU

The University of Dhaka Inter Dept. Basketball Tournament, 2008, is being held in the gymnasium of the university. The Director of IBA inaugurated the tournament on 22nd April. The 1st match was between defending champions Dept. of Accounting & Information Systems and Institute of Business Administration. 16 departments and institutes are participating in the tournament. After the group matches, 8 teams went through to the quarterfinals.

In the 1st quarter final, Dept. of English defeated Dept. of Economics. In the next match, Dept. of Accounting & Information Systems defeated Dept. of Peace & Conflict. Dept of AIS scored 100, which is a university record for the highest score by a team in a match. In the 3rd match Dept. of Public Administration defeated Dept. of Marketing. Dept. of Applied Physics, Electronics and Communication Engineering won the last quarter final over Institute of Business Administration.The four winners of the quarter finals are going to confront each other in the final stage of the tournament - “Super 4,” in the upcoming week .

Inter-Year Cricket Tournament at Law Dept, CU

The Department of Law, University of Chittagong, recently organized Inter-Year Cricket Tournament 2008, which was concluded on 12th May.

The three-day event, which took place at the Central Play Ground of CU, was inaugurated by Professor Dr. M. Shah Alam, Ex-Dean, Faculty of Law, CU on 10th May. Other notables present were Mr. Zakir Hossain, Dean, Faculty of Law, CU; Dr. Abdullah Al Faruque, Chairman of this department; Mr. A. B. M. Abu Noman, Assistant Professor of this department; and the Convener of the tournament, Mr. Md. Ruhul Amin Khan and Mr. Md. Habibur Rahman Jalal, Deputy Directors of the Department of Physical Studies of CU as well as other teachers and the students of Department of Law.

Five teams from five different batches of this department, namely, Pioneer (1st year), 2nd Year Kings (2nd year), 3rd Year Express (3rd year), Law Tigers (4th year) and Pavel-Dileep Super IX (LL.M.) took part in this competition. Pioneer and the Law Tigers squared off against each other in the final after beating Pavel-Dileep Super IX and 3rd Year Express respectively in the semi-finals. In the final, Law Tigers won the championship by defeating Pioneer.


BRACU Faculty Orientation held

The two-day faculty orientation at Savar residential campus began with introductions and a welcome speech by the Pro-VC, Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed on 6th May. On Day 2, Professor Jamilur Reza Choudhury, Vice-Chancellor of BRACU, took a session on the multiplicity of roles of faculty members and their performance evaluations. Other sessions during the orientation covered a range of subjects, from more practical topics such as the academic system, student assessment and student advising, to more academic issues such as 'good' teaching, learning and learning styles, different theories of learning, multiple intelligences and encouraging student participation.


Seminar on Hypertension at BU

Department of Pharmacy, BU and National Heart Foundation Bangladesh (NHFB) jointly organized a seminar on “Hypertension” at the auditorium of Bangladesh University (BU) on the occasion of “International Hypertension Day-2008”. Professor Dr. Md. Anwarul Islam, Chairman, Department of Pharmacy, BU; National Professor Brigadier (Rtd.) Dr. Abdul Mallek, Founder Secretary General of NHFB; Dr. R. K. Khandkar, Chairman; and Dr. Serajul Islam, Joint Secretary General of NHFB, spoke on the occasion. They answered several questions asked from the floor. Professor Quazi Rakibuddin Ahmed, Treasurer of Bangladesh University, concluded the seminar with the note of thanks.

EWU- MBA summer 2008 batch orientation

The Fresher Orientation Programme of Summer 2008 session of East West University was held in the auditorium of the University on 15 May 2008 at 5:30pm. Mr. Jalal Uddin Ahmed, President, Board of Directors, EWU, was present as the chief guest in the programme. Professor Dr. Mohammad Sharif, Vice Chancellor of East West University chaired the program. Among others Mr. Shah Mutorza Ali, register of EWU, Dr. Kamrul Hassan, the Pro-Vice Chancellor of EWU, Profess or Dr. Nazrul Islam, Co-ordinator, Graduate Studies Dept of Business Administration, Professor Dr. Md. Abdul Hye, Dean, Faculty of Business & Economics, Professor Dr. Anisul Haque, Dean, Faculty of Science & Engineering, Dr. Tanbir Ahmed Choudhury, Chairperson, Dept' of Business Administration were present in the program.

Dr. Nazrul Islam, Coordinator, MBA Program welcomed the new students and gave the vote of thanks. The newly elected president Tanvir Omar (on behalf of MBA club) spoke on the occasion. All the MBA club members worked hard to make the session successful.

Teacher training programmes at Speed

Speed successfully launched its 8th batch of learners on May 4, 2008. The launching ceremony was attended by the Deputy Chairperson of Scholastica, Ms Wasima Parveen. The number of learners at SPEED has now reached over 120 teachers, with a passing rate of 100%. Among the participants, more than two-thirds are from Scholastica School. According to Scholastica's policy, all its teachers will be certified within the next few years. Apart from Scholastica, participants in SPEED's Teachers Training Program include faculty from ISD, Play Pen, Maple Leaf, Hurdco International School, Oxford International School, Lakehead Grammar School and Banani Bidda Niketon. More than 20 teachers have successfully completed the program and have received graduation certificates from Cambridge International Examinations (CIE).

SPEED offers programs apart form teacher training, such as training programs for English language proficiency leading to Cambridge ESOL exams, computer skills, accountancy (leading to ACCA exams) and corporate professional development for individuals in companies and various organizations. Sunnydale students visit world bank office, dhaka

On May 18, 2008, 'O' Level students of Sunnydale School visited the World Bank Office as part of their co-curricular program. Their course teacher, Mr. Siddique Hayat Khan and 'O' Level Course Coordinator, Mrs. Sheba Tasmin Hoq, accompanied them. The program began with a presentation by Mr. Mohammed Alhousseyni Toure, Operations Advisor of the World Bank. He spoke on areas where the World Bank provides assistance to its member countries, especially Bangladesh.

Next Mr. Siddique Hayat Khan made a multimedia presentation on emergence and roles of the Bretton Woods Institutions, namely the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, along with their objectives.

This was followed by a presentation by Mr. M. Mazid of the World Bank. The presentations were followed by a lively question and answer session, participated by the students. The program ended with a vote of thanks offered by Mrs. Sheba Tasnim Hoq.


Seminar on Thalaessemia at Mymensingh Medical College

A seminar on “Thalassemia Awareness and Prevention” was held at the conference room of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) conference room on May 17. Medicine Club of Mymensingh Medical College (MMC) organized the seminar with MMCH Director Brig. General Maung Tin Win in the chair.

Principal of MMC Prof. Dr. Md. Monwar Hossain spoke on the occasion as chief guest while Eng. Omar Golam Rabbany, President of Bangladesh Thalassemia Samity and Syed Deedar Bakth, Adviser of Bangladesh Thalassemia Samity were special guests. Prof. Dr. Md. Nazrul Islam, Head of the Pediatrics Department of MMCH was the main speaker at the seminar.

KM Saif-ur-Rahman and Md. Niaz Mostafa, President and Secretary of Medicine Club MMC unit respectively, delivered welcome speech.MMC Medicine Club arranges low cost vaccination programmes, pre-clinical discussions, clinical meetings, free health check-up programmes, seminars and symposiums on various health related issues among many other activities.


Open Source Workshop Completed in Noakhali

To enhance the practice of open source software, BdOSN is helping to arrange workshops in different universities of Bangladesh. Noakhali Science and Technology University successfully held their workshop on 26 - 27th April. Vice Chancellor of Noakhali Science and Technology University, Prof. Abul Khair inaugurated the workshop.

The department of Computer Science and Technology organised the workshop in association with Bangladesh Open Source Network (BdOSN). Ninety students were trained on Linux distributions and Joomla in this workshop. Besides, there was a special session on computer programming. The NSTU Open Source Network was also formed on the last day of the workshop.


Seminar on Robot at NUB Rajshahi Campus

A seminar on "Face detection and eye tracking for human-robot symbiosis" was held at Northern University Bangladesh (NUB), Rajshahi campus. NUB Computer Club (Rajshahi Campus) organized the seminar. The keynote paper was presented by Prof. Dr. Md. Al-Amin Bhuiyan of Computer Science and Engineering department of Jahangirnagar University (JU) while Deputy Registrar and NUB Rajshahi Campus in-charge Md. Mubinul Islam was the chair. Prof. Dr. Azizar Rahman, ex-chairman of CSE department of Rajshahi University (RU) was present as chief guest with Deputy Registrar Md. Asraful Islam, Prof. Amir Ali Sardar was present as special guest. In the seminar a robot demonstrated how to receive facial and verbal commands as well as how to perform against those commands. More than 500 students of NUB Rajshahi Campus actively participated in the seminar.


Seminar on Mineral resources at RU

Rajshahi University Natural and Mineral Resource Development Committee organized a seminar on 'Fuel Policy and National Interest Perspective on Bangladesh' on May 7.

Prof. Shamsul Alam, dean of electronic engineering of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology and director of energy institute presented the keynote paper on 'Fuel Policy and National Interest Perspective on Bangladesh' at the seminar. Engineer Sheikh Muhammad Shahidullah, Prof Anu Muhammad, Prof MM Akash, Prof Musfik Ahmed, Prof. AKM Abdul Mazid, advocate Hamidul Haque, Prof. Musfik Ahmed and Prof Hassan Azizul Haque also spoke at the seminar. The seminar was presided over by Prof Muhammad Naser, chairman of Natural and Mineral Resource Development Committee of Rajshahi University.

Several university teachers, researchers, students and environment specialists took part in the seminar.


Orientation program at DU

Dept. of Economics along with dept. of Sociology, Political Science and Development Studies of DU organized an orientation program on 10th May, 2008.The orientation program was held in the TSC auditorium which was attended by Mr. Harunur Rashid, Dean of Social Sciences Dhaka University. Afterwards some teachers and students of the departments also spoke on the occasion.

Orientation at DIU

The orientation program for the newly enrolled undergraduate students of faculty of Business and Economics for Summer 2008 semester of Daffodil International University was held on 11 May 2008 at the DIU Auditorium. A total of 634 students have enrolled in this semester in DIU.

Professor Dr. Aminul Islam, Vice Chancellor, welcomed the students and introduced DIU faculty members and officers. Advisor, DIU Professor Shahjahan Mina, also spoke on the occasion.

Heads of different departments delivered speeches congratulating the new students. Professor Dr. Mizanur Rahman, Registrar, DIU, conducted the orientation program.


Summerfield Champions in Debate Competition

The students of Summerfield International School became champions in the debate competition organized by the British Council and Bangladesh Debate Federation. A number of English medium schools participated in the competition where Maple Leaf and Summerfield reached the finals.

The debate team members from Summerfield were: Issa Hashim, Tousif Khan and Shahrukh Khan. Tousif Amin Khan was the best speaker in the debate and he also won the first place in public speaking contest.


CBP Career Workshop at Eastern University

Student Employment Project (STEP) and Eastern University Business Forum recently organized a daylong workshop titled CBP Career Workshop at Eastern University Auditorium. Four different topics: Confidence Building, Skills for Call Center Career, Job Search & CV Writing, and Interview Skills were presented by some renowned corporate personalities. About 70 students joined this workshop. At the end of workshop, Prof Dr. Abdur Rab, Pro VC of Eastern University, and Mr. Abdullah M. Taher, CEO of STEP distributed certificate among the participants. Ms. Fatema Shammi, Faculty and Adviser of Business Forum thanked everyone for joining the workshop.
