Remembering Heath Ledger
Shamma M. Raghib
HEATH Ledger had an uncanny ability to act as a troubled soul be it an addict, a suicide person, a drunken soul, or a victim! Even with all this, whenever we saw this young soul, we had a sense of calm and attachment to every character he played. Was it because he was so young and vibrant to look at, with his wonderful smile?
The young Australian started his career in films when he was in his teens; however his first breakthrough came in playing the romantic actor in “10 things I hate about you”. It was more of a rare moment when some people saw a star being born back in 1999! As the less-dangerous-than-he-looks leading man, he was broody and funny than a guy playing a high school boy ought to be, and completely magnetic.
Soon after his first success, he starred in several other movies, in “The Patriot”, he played the doomed son of Mel Gibson, and soon after, “A Knight's Tale” made him one of the top-paid actors in his time!
The next few films however, were risky and minor roles in movies- like the character Sonny in “Monster's Ball” where he played the tormented prison guard- burning with anguish over his life, over his father's disappointment in him! He took on his toughest and perhaps best role as the taciturn, closeted Ennis Del Mar in 2005's "Brokeback Mountain" which earned him an Academy Award nomination. He didn't win an Oscar for this, I wonder why, but from what I saw, he stayed true to his character in the movie, and it still makes me teary eyed every time I remember the ending of the movie.
Heath Ledger continued to take on new challenging roles, in “Casanova”, “Candy” and “I'm not there”. He will probably be best remembered for playing the wide-smiled Joker in the upcoming sequel of Batman- “The Dark Knight”.
'Hearthrob Heath Ledger' as he was called often by his fans, in his parting from the world however, he didn't make the hearts throb, rather he made them break. He admitted to New York Times that he was "stressed out" and had taken Ambien to combat insomnia. He was seen dining with his new girlfriend two nights ago. Then something happened.
At 3:30 p.m. on Jan. 22, a therapist and a housekeeper found his lifeless body in bed in an apartment in Soho. Did all the violent, troubled characters he played, too much to take for him? Did it get the better of him this time around? Was the pain too unbearable? His void will never be filled up, the vibrant smile, the young face won't ever be seen again. A 2-year old girl, without her father- the loss is just too much to bear for us who cared. There will be no more moments of him declaring his love with his last, self-destructive breath in "Monster's Ball."There will be no more actors completely indulged in himself, his character! There will be no more moments to gasp! His death was just as painful as the characters he played. May his soul rest in peace! We will remember you Heath Ledger, not for your death, but for those moments you created for us!
