First Convocation of Eastern University

The 1st Convocation of Eastern University was held on 25th June at the Bangladesh China Friendship Conference Center (BCFCC) at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka. Begum Rasheda K Chowdhury, Advisor, Ministry of Cultural Affairs, Govt. of the People's Republic of Bangladesh was present as the Chief Guest. Professor Sirajul Islam Chowdhury was the convocation speaker and Mr. Abul Kashem Haider, Chairman, Board of Governors of the University spoke on the occasion.

Professor Rahim B Talukder, Vice Chancellor of Eastern University also rendered his speech in the convocation.


Certificate Award Ceremony at Presidency University


On May 29, 2008 a Certificate Award Ceremony was held in Aman Conference Hall of Presidency University for its students who successfully completed a 14-week program on Employability Skills. The program was designed to instill corporate behavior and etiquette. In addition, it also helps participants in developing skills that are required in a profession. Dr. SM. Akbar, Managing Director, The UAE-Bangladesh Investment Company Limited was the Chief Guest, while Mr. M. Ehsanul Haque, Executive Director & Chief Operating Officer, Infrastructure Development Company Limited was present as Special Guest. The ceremony started with a presentation by Mrs. Asma Banu, Career Counselor, Presidency university emphasizing on the skills that are required by the 21st Century corporations. Mr. M. Ehsanul Haque briefly discussed issues relating to work ethics and etiquettes. Dr. Akbar enlightened the audience with his advice as to what an employer looks for in a potential candidate. Dr. M. Harunur Rashid, Vice Chancellor, Presidency University addressed the gathering with his brief speech regarding the university and the importance of acquiring transferable skills from educational institutions to workplace. The ceremony was attended by 15 participants who received certificates from the chief guest at the end of the ceremony. Mr. Nahid Hassan Khan, Director-BBA Program, School of Business, other faculty members and students attended the program. Mr. Tauhid Ziauddin, Coordinator of Career Services, Presidency University thanked the guests and audience for their participation in the ceremony.


AIUB roundtable on ICT Roadmap

American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) hosted a roundtable discussion titled “Roundtable on National ICT Roadmap” at its campus on June 21. The prime objective of this roundtable was to gather opinion from the academicians about the national ICT roadmap and convey it to the government to achieve a sustainable national ICT policy.

Dr. Carmen Z Lamagna, Vice Chancellor, AIUB in her welcome note said, “We are delighted to host this roundtable discussion. I express my sincere gratitude to chief guest, moderator and all discussants for their active participation in this roundtable event. I am confident that this roundtable will bring many vital issues in limelight that in practice will help government to adopt a sustainable ICT policy”.

Chief Guest of the roundtable, Mr. S.M. Wahid-uz-Zaman, Honorable Secretary of the Ministry of Science and Information & Communication Technology (ICT), The Government of Peoples Republic of Bangladesh said, “Organizing this roundtable is a worthwhile decision and I believe this gives a unique platform to academic professionals to contribute to national ICT roadmap”.

“Government has recognized that ICT has an enormous power to leverage socio-economic activities. For this reason, a comprehensive ICT policy is invaluable to ensure ICT based development. In this regard, industry and academia can help government to adopt a pragmatic ICT policy”, he added.

Dr. Atiur Rahman, Professor, Development Studies, Dhaka University and Chairperson, Unnayan Shamannay moderated the entire roundtable session. He said, “Time has come to take innovative approach to implement ICT in each and every parts of our national life. We must ensure global standard IT education and at the same time government should come forward to digitalize its activities in order to ensure transparency and provides quality services to the citizens”.

T.I.M. Nurul Kabir, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Spinnovation and Dr. Ananya Raihan, Executive Director, D.Net (Development Research Network) presented keynote paper on behalf of Gov3 Limited. Mr. M.A. Kabir, Assistant Professor, Computer Science Department, AIUB also presented another keynote paper on current ICT scenario of Bangladesh.

The roundtable event was also supported by Bangladesh Computer Council (BCC), Gov3 Limited, Spinnovation, D.Net and Bangladesh Telecentre Network (BTN). NeoSTAR Alliance a forum of university students and professionals was in charge of event management of this roundtable discussion.


Workshop at Asian University of Bangladesh

Asian University of Bangladesh's University Students Study Forum organized a workshop on self development, assignment & presentation on

21st June, 2008 at AUB campus. The workshop welcomed Md. Saifuddin Ahmed Shohagh president of USSF. BBA students of first semester participated in this workshop. Mr. Assadullah Asad, an international debater who participated in different debate competition in USA and Malaysia, presented his topics in this workshop. Mr. Julfiker Ali, who writes job related books and lecturer of AUB, conducted a session on self development. He talked about the process and criteria of self development. Asian University of Bangladesh is known for their various programs in the sector of career development and opportunities.


Film Festival at CU to save Hasan

The students of Department of Law, University of Chittagong (CU) organized a three-day film festival from 2-4 June at the auditorium of Faculty of Social Sciences, CU to raise funds to save Md. Aminul Hasan. Hasan, who is a student of LL.M., is suffering from blood cancer. A total of nine films were shown in the festival. The entire amount of money raised from the festival was handed over for his treatment. The festival took place with the support of Department of Law, CU; Professor Dr. M. Shah Alam, former Dean, Faculty of Law CU and Executive's Care.

Doctors have advised his family to take him abroad for better treatment, which his low-paid government employee father cannot afford. His family appealed to generous people of the country to help continue his treatment which involves about Tk 50 Lakh. Interuniversity Math Olympiad at East West University

East West University organized interuniversity Math Olympiad for the first time at EWU campus on 21st June. Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) was placed consecutively first, second and third position in this competition.

A total of 61 participants from 13 public and private universities took part in this three-hour long competition.

Mr. Jalaluddin Ahmed, President, Board of Directors of East West University was present as the chief guest in the prize giving occasion and Professor Dr. Md. Kamrul Hasan, Pro-Vice Chancellor of EWU inaugurated the competition at the first session. In his speech, Mr. Jalaluddin Ahmed put emphasis on the participants about the importance of such competition in the context of Bangladesh. He said, “Mathematics is an interdisciplinary language and tool. Like reading, and writing, math is and important component of learning and 'doing' in each academic discipline. It is such a useful language and tool that it is considered to be one of the bases in our formal education system.”

Professor Jafar Iqbal of Shahjalal University of Science & Technology was also present as the convener of the panel of the judges in that competition. He said that such competition would inspire us to lean towards science education.

Professor Elias Uddin Biswas, Mr. Munir Hasan, Dr. Shafiqul Islam, Professor Mohammad Kaykobad, Professor Khodadad Khan, Professor Subrata Majumder, Dr. Mahbub Alam Mazumder, Dr. Abu Saleh Abdun Noor were present in the judges panel of the competition.


Seminar on Access Network at AUST

A seminar titled 'Trends of Access network in Telecommunications' was organized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Student Branch at AUST in its campus. The main speaker was Engineer Sharifur Rahman, Assistant Divisional Engineer, BTTB. Brig. Gen (Retd.) M.A Husain, Head, Dept. of EEE and Prof. Abdur Rahim Mollah welcomed the students. The students were introduced to different access networks in telecommunication and their progress and possibilities in Bangladesh at the seminar.
