“THE world is your playground. You believe in change, and you are passionate about creating positive impact in society. You are a leader.” The message was clear, and spirits were high. AIESEC has opened its doors this summer, to provide exciting and life changing opportunities to the talents of Bangladesh.
Standing proud on a network of 100 countries, 1100 universities; 28,000 members and over 800,000 alumni, AIESEC is the world's largest student run organization. AIESEC Bangladesh comprises of four local offices: North South University, BRAC University, Independent University Bangladesh, and American International University, Bangladesh. As a part of the organization's recruitment process, every year each of these four offices organize an assessment day, popularly known as “AIESEC Team's Day”. This is what they have been up to:
North South University
The first office in Bangladesh, AIESEC in North South University (NSU) now in its 10th year, has been a flagship in developing leaders and professionals. On June 21, 2008, a total of 250 people were invited to attend AIESEC Teams Day. It was hosted by AIESEC Alumni, Ms. Shehrina Kamal. A wide range of activities were conducted throughout the day, through which the participants got to know about their long term vision and goals.
There were also some special guests in the event. Ms. Lissa Anderson, an AIESEC trainee from Sweden, spoke about her culture, bringing in a pinch of diversity on the day. She was followed by AIESEC Alumni, Mr. Jamil Haider (currently working in Masthead PR). He spoke about his AIESEC internship in Sweden, and said, “AIESEC internship is a lifetime experience where you get to know different culture, different people, and their working style, everyone should take this opportunity at least once in a lifetime.”
The day was closed by another AIESEC Alumni, Mr. Omar Farook (currently working as, Technical Co-coordinator, Economic Development Unit, CARE Bangladesh). He spoke about how different issues are affecting the world, and ended by showing a very alarming presentation on how society needs people's positive contribution.
BRAC University
Leadership skills, public speaking skills, communication skills and interpersonal skills all of these were on the showcase, when BRAC University hosted their AIESEC Team's Day on June 7, 2008. Chaired by AIESEC Alumni, Mr. Borhanuddin Ahmed (currently working in bdnews24.com), the day was promising to be a blast!
Eight teams were formed by matching the crossword letters of eight different words that were given to every applicant as they entered the plenary hall.
Their first task was to get to know each other and they spent 5 minutes with their teams. This was followed by a presentation describing each of the team members. Shortly after that, all the participants became engaged in exciting team building games, which at the end not only tested their skills, it also help build a special bond between them.
The day was rounded off by some AIESEC Alumni speaking at the event. Ms. Sanjida Rashid (currently working in GrameenPhone Cellbazaar) spoke about her experience in attending international conferences hosted by AIESEC, and also mentioned the importance of attending workshops/seminars, which she got for plenty by being a member of AIESEC.
As a memento of the day, the participants had left their hand prints and signatures on a long banner.
Independent University, Bangladesh
July 4, 2008 An epic day for AIESEC in Independent University, Bangladesh, as hoards of students flocked to attend the AIESEC Team's Day! It was held in the seminar room at Campus-9, Baridhara, and an excited bunch of AIESECers were waiting to receive the students. Chaired by AIESEC Alumni, Mr. Rubayat Khan this event was sure to be a treat for them.
After the initial ice-breakers and AIESEC introductions, the participants jumped straight into one of the most mind-boggling games they ever faced. Crisis management is a part of everyday life, and to test their abilities, the participants faced a challenging task of solving a tricky case study. Not only was the case tricky, but they had to forego their best team member, and also any other resources available.
After much hard work, the participants got a chance to speak to Ms. Leanne Beasley, who was a former vice president in London School of Economics, and the African nation of Togo. She shared a lot of her travel experiences and learning, finishing the day with a great exposure for the participants.
American International University, Bangladesh
The AIESECers of American International University, Bangladesh called out loud “Join The Change!” and welcomed 250 people into their AIESEC Team's Day on July 5, 2008. Chaired by AIESEC Alumni, Mr. Waseef Hasan, the participants were ready to spend a day overwhelmed by excitement, anticipation, tension, enjoyment, challenges, and of course, the thirst to prove oneself.
The day promised to be full of activities when everyone sportingly played along with the game of “Super Chickens”. This was followed by workshops on AIESEC Values, crisis management, time management and a special discussion on global warming.
The day didn't seem to want to end, and neither did the delegates lose their enthusiasm.. They were visited by two foreign AIESEC trainees currently working in Bangladesh, which added more flavor to the whole Team's Day experience.
At the end, the AIESECers of AIUB were very proud to host such a great event, and can't wait to start working with the new recruits.
The AIESEC Team's Day proved to be a great experience for over 700 people this year. It is an essential part of the recruitment process, giving current AIESECers an opportunity to assess and evaluate potential recruits. In the end, an estimated 200 Bangladeshi talents will be joining the AIESEC network this year. The best part is though, that simultaneously 100 other countries will be following the same routine and thousands of students will be joining the AIESEC network globally all at the same time. Once done, well it's a pool of opportunities waiting to be exploited!
