A Day and a Night to Remember for IUB Graduates

Tahsin Hassan Bini

THE 12th convocation 2008 of Independent University Bangladesh (IUB) was held on 15th June. Incidentally, 2008 is also the 15th birthday of IUB. Guests, faculties, trustees, Governing Council members, donors, parents and guardians, and the graduates of the batch of 2008 arrived at the Bangladesh China Friendship Conference Center. The official program began at 11 AM with the graduates entering the room wearing their graduation gowns. The ceremony was magnificent. The Chancellor Prof. Iajuddin Ahmed declared the convocation open. Then the Chairman of IUB ESTCDT Towhid Samad, Vice Chancellor Prof. Bazlul Mobin Chowdhury and special guest Dr. Hossain Zillur Rahman gave their speeches. The convocation speaker Prof. Charles L. Choguill then gave his speech. 4 students received the Chancellor's Gold Medal. 12 students of the Media and Communication department graduated this year with one receiving Magna cum Laude and another cum Laude. The ceremony ended at 12.30 PM. Then the graduates had photo session with their parents, friends and faculties. All the parents were happy and looked very proud.

The Convocation evening program took place at Radisson Winter Garden. This was a first time venue for IUB convocation and it was a splendid choice. The majority of the graduates attended this celebration with their parents, friends and spouses. Student councilors and volunteers also attended. The graduates really enjoyed themselves. IUB had a surprise for the graduates. It organized a concert at Radison. where Fuad, Shumon, Partho and Farshid enchanted the audience with songs. The students danced and had great fun. IUB also organized a DJ party. Several graduates were so engrossed with the musical program that they forgot to participate in the ceremonial dinner. Many faculties joined the graduates in their fun and revelry. Every one looked very happy. However the graduates' cheerfulness was tempered by the thought of facing the reality of getting a career job. From that day they could not revert to their University times like going to classes, spending time with friends, chilling out and other carefree activities. When someone wants to realize his/her life's goal, he/she must be prepared to give up certain things.

Today a large number of students have graduated from IUB. Of the recent batch some will work at a job, some will set up their own businesses, some will complete higher education and some will get married and look after their family.15th June was an unforgettable day for the IUB graduating class of 2008. They will never forget the 4 or 5years they spent at IUB.

It's not the fault of a student !

Because the year ONLY has 365 days. Typical academic year for a student:

1. Fridays-52 Fridays in a year. You know Fridays are for rest. Days left 313.

2. Summer holidays-50, where weather is very hot and difficult to study. Days left 263.

3. 8 hours daily sleep-130 days GONE!!! Days left 141.

4. 1 hour for daily playing (good for health)-means 15 days. Days left 126.

5. 2 hours daily for food & other delicacies (chewing properly & swallowing)-means 30 days. Days left 96.

6. 1 hour for talking (man is a social animal)-means 15 days. Days left 81.

7. Exam days-per year at least 35 days. Days left 46.

8. Quarterly, half-yearly and festival (holidays)-40 days. Balance 6 days.

9. For sickness-at least 3 days. Remaining days=3.

10. Movies and functions-at least 2 days. 1 day left.

11. That 1 day is your birthday. How can you study on that day???

Balance = 0 days

“How can a student pass???”

Hmm…A student has to cheat to pass…!!??!
