Importance of Judo and Karate to a student

Khalilur Rahman

TODAY our lives are getting too monotonous and mundane. Particularly, urban people are always occupied with their office lives and other activities. Student life has also become stressful because of the huge academic syllabus. All these factors result in a stressful effect on us and we fall vulnerable to many dangerous diseases. To rid our days of these kinds of stresses that make our life difficult, physical exercise is the answer. Urbanized citizens often forget about the physical exercise. We can live healthier lives if we could engage in physical exercise regularly. But most people lose their enthusiasm in physical exercise in just a few days.

Exercising through a sporting aspect is better than the traditional way. Judo and karate are sports that comprise both physical exercise as well as self-defence. Judo and karate are sports that have been in practice since ancient times. Dr. Zigaro Kano who is a physician in Japan is known to use Judo and karate as form of treatment on his patients. He has introduced a modern style in these martial art forms. Many people have the wrong idea about Judo and karate. Judo and karate are not just means of violent abuse.

Nor is it a game of extortion. In fact it contains various significant meanings. It helps in the movement of our limbs that in turn help regulate proper blood flow in muscles. This provides the muscle with energy and strength. Also, having the full knowledge and technique of self-defiance would come in handy if one was to defend himself against the occasional thugs and hijackers. There is a popular saying “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”. Dhaka universities physical training centre pioneers in introducing Judo along with karate to the students. It was initiated last December having more than 150 enthusiastic students. Students have already attained yellow and orange belts through the first rounds of examination in the eight course belt exams. This course is such that anyone who is consistent is able to achieve the black belt which is the highest rank within two and half consecutive years. Mr.Shamsher Alam and Ms. Noyona chowdhury are the two senseis (teacher in Japanese language).

They have instructed us sincerely through their experience. They are both masters in their field and have represented our country in both national and international games. Along with self-defence skills, we are taught of morality and norms of life as disciplines of Judo and karate. It is one of the most disciplined sports known to man. Without discipline and respect for the performance attaining a pass in the exam is not an easy task. So, Judo and karate helps mould one to be disciplined and sincere in every sphere of the practical life.

Many illnesses such as asthma, back pain and cardiac arrest can be improved and sometimes effectively prevented by the techniques of Judo and karate. Judo and karate build stamina and heighten sensitivity. We are also bantered by our sensei regarding different aspects of life. They build our confidence level, courage, and encourage us to become energetic in the job sector. Students of Judo and karate centre of D.U. took part in many national competitions and attained victory for their institution. Having a proper diet and balancing it with proper physical fitness is essential for an effective student life. Judo and karate are mandatory for the physically fit people of Japan and China. So for a healthier Bangladesh, I believe that games like Judo and karate should also be introduced or implemented in every university, school and college here. Our daily life has now become more tempestuous. Student life could become more fulfilling if we could wipe out the excess stress and live with full throttle.

A healthy student life is a start to a healthy illustrious life. Institution like Dhaka University Judo and karate centre play an important role towards building our nation and bringing health and success just like that in China and Japan. We have to remember healthy students are the healthy citizens of the future and healthy thoughts are those that come from the minds of healthy citizens.
