The 6th colloquium at English Dept, NSU

NORTH South University English Department arranged its sixth Colloquium earlier this month on July 1, 2008.The speaker of the show was Professor Anu Mohammad, Chairman, Dept. of Economics, Jahangirnagar University. The discussion was coordinated by Dr.Azfar Hussain, Asst. Professor, Department of English, NSU and lead by the chairman of the department, Dr.Selim Sarwar.Azfar Hussain presented the opening speech and introduced Professor Anu Mohammad to the audience.Anu Mohammad precisely discussed current issues like the oil price hike while explaining the development of the prices of products. He talked about basics such as supply demand mismatch to start with. Investigating the reason behind the price hikes was also a priority according to him. Then to tie up with other aspects besides political economy Anu Mohammad brought up the fact that literature reflects the daily ordeals many families face due to economic insufficiency. The guest speaker also considered discussing rationalization of prices, a particular term often used by World Bank and IMF.
The discussion also took in issues like population and food crisis. The cycle of dehumanization, that engulfs the upper class of the society and women related subjects were also a part of the conversation.Anu Mohammad cleared the difference between consumer sovereignty and sovereignty of individuals. He did not dither to say that in our country students can attain higher degrees in Economics without even hearing the term 'exploitation'. He also briefed his audience a little bit about market demend.Globalization; he said might as well be called centralization or monopolization. Talking about political economy Professor Anu Mohammad employed the example of Iraq. Lastly, the relation between literature and economy was shown as the united effort of people working in the fields of literature, culture and political economy.

Car Phone
A woman reported her car was stolen, and mentioned that there was a car phone in it. The policeman who took the report called the phone and told the guy that answered that he had read the ad in the newspaper and wanted to buy the car. They arranged to meet, and the thief was arrested.
Not Me!
The Belgium news agency Belga reported in November that a man suspected of robbing a jewelry store in Liege said he couldn't have done it because he was busy breaking into a school at the same time. Police then arrested him for breaking into the school.
Cash Machine - Kentucky
Two men tried to pull the front off a cash machine by running a chain from the machine to the bumper of their pickup truck. Instead of pulling the front panel off the machine, though, they pulled the bumper off their truck. Scared, they left the scene and drove home.
With the chain still attached to the machine. With their bumper still attached to the chain. With their vehicle's license plate still attached to the bumper.
