Brand Witz 2008 - the event brief

IBA Communication Club (IBACC) is organizing an Inter Business School Marketing Competition Brand Witz 2008. The aim of the competition is to create an opportunity for the business students to relate the theoretical concepts of marketing and branding to real life situations by using their creativity and innovation. A key objective of the competition is to enhance a sense of social responsibility among the students. The event will create a platform for interaction between senior business executives and marketing personnel with the business school students under one roof. The official sponsor for the event is CLEAR, a prominent Brand of Unilever Bangladesh Limited.

In the competition, 24 teams from top 15 business schools will take part. The participating institutions are:

* University of Dhaka
* Jahangirnagar University
* Khulna University
* Chittagong University
* Rajshahi University
* American International University of Bangladesh (AIUB)
* BRAC University
* Eastern University
* East West University
* Independent University of Bangladesh (IUB)
* North South University (NSU)
* South East University
* Stamford University
* United International University
* Institute of Business Administration

Competition Details:
The 24 teams will be divided in six different groups for the 1st round. The teams will be given a case which they will solve in an hour and present it in front of a panel of judges. The top team from each group will qualify to the second round. In the 2nd round, six teams will be given a real life case developed by Unilever Bangladesh Limited. The teams will be given one day to solve the case. Only top 3 teams from the 2nd round will qualify for the final round where the teams will be asked to design a Social Campaign on a particular social issue. The final of the competition will be televised in ATN Bangla. All the team members of the Champion team of the event will have an excellent exposure of working with the Brand team of Unilever Bangladesh for three months on part time basis.

* Workshop: July 31, 2008 (Thursday)
* 1st round: August 1, 2008 (Friday)
* Semi Final: August 2, 2008 (Saturday)
* Final Round: August 16, 2008 (Saturday)

A press conference regarding Brand Witz 2008 - Inter Business School Marketing Competition has been organized by IBACC and UNILEVER Bangladesh Limited on July 30, 2008 at IBA premise. Dr. Muhammad Ziaulhaq Mamun, Director of IBA briefed the press. Professor Syed Munir Khasru, Moderator of the club was present during the conference and answered the questions from the press.


CUEESA Annual Talent Award-2008

Chittagong University former Economics Student Association Family Talent Award-2008 was given on 26th July, 2008. FBCCI president Anisul Huq attended as a chief guest. A total number of 82 students were awarded in the function. The program was followed by a colourful cultural show.





A prayer for an all round student...

Fowzia Sultana Tumpa of Sixth Semester, English Literature & Language
Premier University, Chittagong is suffering from liver cancer. She is undergoing treatment in a Bangkok hospital. The teachers and students of the university have requested all the readers of Star Campus to pray for her early and full recovery.




Literary Discussion at DIU

THE Department of English, Daffodil International University, in collaboration with Star Campus, The Daily Star, organised a literary discussion on the Prince Plaza campus on 28 July, 2008. The discussion was divided into two parts. The first part centred on the science fiction of Jules Verne and second part on book review. The purpose of the arrangement was to make students aware of the importance of reading science fictions and also encourage their habit of book reading.

The speakers observed that science fiction combines science and literature; therefore from reading science fiction one can derive the taste of both science and literature. Professor Dr. Aminul Islam, Vice-Chancellor of Daffodil International University, chaired the programme. He called upon the students to exercise the power of reasoning and attain scientific vision in life. Shahnoor Wahid, editor of Star Campus, elaborated on the literary creations of Jules Verne that had positive impact on the scientific inventions in later days. Professor Shaheen Kabir, Jahangirnagar University, Asjadul Kibria, daily Prothom Alo, Saikat Habib, daily Samakal, among others, took part in the discussion. Umme Kulsum, Senior Lecturer, English Department, DIU, read a script on the life and works of Jules Verne while Golam Zilani, an English Department student, made a Power Point presentation on the important works which were rendered into films. Video clips of some of his famous films, including Mysterious Island and Around the World in 80 Days, were shown on side screen with multimedia projector.

In the second part Dr. Faheem Hasan Shahed, Head of the Department of English, American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB), discussed the book “Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance” by Barak Obama, Democratic Party presidential candidate of the United States. The book review was followed by a lively question-answer session.

The programme was moderated by Dr. Binoy Barman, Head of the Department of English, DIU, and conducted by Nahid Kaiser, Lecturer in English. Nishath Sultana, faculty member of English, presented a science-related song in the programme.


East West University ranked first

EAST West University earned the unique distinction of becoming No.1 among the private universities and No.3 among all public and private universities in Bangladesh, only preceded by Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology and Dhaka University, according to Webometrics ranking of 100 top universities belonging to Indian subcontinent region in July 2008.

The survey was undertaken as an initiative of Cybermetrics Lab, July 2008-regional and global ranking of Indian region, CCHS-CSIC, Madrid, Spain. (The result can be reached at www.webometrics.info)

East West University also secured the top position among the private universities and 3rd among all public and private universities of Bangladesh accoding to the survey undertaken by the same organization in July 2007.

The ranking is based on research activities, visibility of the university nationally and internationally, volume of scholarly documents created and published, and size and impact of the web presence. This ranking is widely accepted all over the world.

East West University started in September, 1996 with 20 students and six faculty members, and currently more than 5000 undergraduate and graduate students are studying in different disciplines.
