10 Days with PBTL

Tahsina Farah Sanam

INDUSTRIAL Training is an extra academic course in BUET, which usually depends on the authority of different departments. A few days ago we, the students of Level-4, Term-1 of Electrical and Electronics (EEE) department had a great opportunity to attain an industrial training offered by our EEE department. This was during the semester or the term break.

During the on going term, we applied to the department to arrange a training session and in the term break and our teacher replied to that request positively. They informed us about the different companies related to electrical and electronics engineering, various mobile operators (Grameen, City cell, Actel, Banglalink), their vendors(Huawei, Siemens), different power generation companies(PGCL, SCADA, Energy pac etc.), BTV, atomic energy commission and many more. These companies all replied positively and were willing to provide the BUET students with industrial training.

After the term final exam, all the students of EEE department were assigned to different companies according to their choices. I along with 19 other students received an offer from Pacific Bangladesh Telecom Limited (PBTL)-the one and only CDMA network provider of the country (City cell) for the industrial attachment. It was a great honor to be a part of City cell as a trainee student.

Our Training started on the 24 June at the Pacific Tower, Mohakhali, the head office of PBTL. Our Course coordinator was Mr. S.A Shahin. He assigned several senior employees of Huawei Bangladesh limited (the vendor of PBTL) to train us. Among them, Mr. Hamid of NOC (Network operation control) department was our training coordinator. Mr. Hamid was really an affable person and he cooperated with us as much as he could throughout the training sessions. The total training contents were divided into four sections- NOC (Network Operation Control), RF (Radio Frequency), BSS (Base Station Subsystem) and CORE (related to switching and prepaid offer). Since Huawei Bangladesh Limited was the vendor of PBTL, it handled the MSD (Manage Service Department) portion of City cell network. For example, Huawei gave all kinds of technical support to the PBTL or equivalently to City cell. Thus, our training was conducted by Huawei employees. We are very thankful to Mr. Hamid for NOC part, Mr. Monirul for RF part; Mr. Safiul and Mr. Subrata for BSS part and to Mr. Morad for CORE part. They taught us with much care and consideration. Previously we learned about GSM and CDMA network and the theory behind them. Here we got the chance to know about their practical implementations. We also got opportunity to learn about the transmission system such as how a mobile network is set up or what are the pre-requisites and many more. We were amazed to see how each and every call is controlled and monitored centrally. For each aspect, we were first taught the theoretical knowledge and then saw their practical applications. Really this training will not fail to become an asset in our life if we are to head for a job in telecommunication field.

On the last day of our training we were taken to a BTS (Base Trans-receiver Subsystem) visit at Banani. There we saw the BTS, server, BSS, microwave antennas and various other devices closely and were able to find the relevance of what we had learned theoretically during the training. Moreover City cell is the one and only CDMA network provider of our country. So we have learned a lot about the CDMA technology through the training. We are really thankful to all the members of PBTL as well as to the members of Huawei who gave us their valuable time despite their very busy schedules. Last but not least, I can personally vouch we all really enjoyed the training a lot and this will indeed be a good memory for all of us.
