Scholarship Award Ceremony held

To facilitate the meritorious and financially underprivileged students, Ascent Education Development Trust (AEDT) and Scholastica Private Ltd jointly organized a scholarship award ceremony on 23rd August 2008. Mr. Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan, Secretary to the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education was present at the occasion as the special guest.

AEDT is a non profitable and non political charitable organization founded in 2006 by Mrs. Yasmeen Murshed, High Commissioner for the Peoples Republic of Bangladesh in Pakistan, Mr. Farooq Sobhan, President of Bangladesh Enterprise Institute, Prof. Abdullah Abu Sayeed Chairman of Biswa Shahitya Kendra, Syed Marghub Murshed former secretary, Mr. A. Matin Chowdhury Managing Director of Rahim Textile Mills Ltd, Mr. Aly Zaker Dramatist and communication consultant, Dr. Sufia Ahmed national professor, Mrs. Sabrina Islam Managing Director of Tulip Garments, Syeda Madiha Murshed, Deputy Managing Director ASCENT Group and Syed Maher Murshed, Acting Chairman and Managing Director ASCENT Group.

The mission of this Trust is to provide quality education to meritorious and underprivileged students and to provide various educational programs to enhance knowledge, skills and attitudes among Bangladeshi students. It has begun its work with students of Scholastica. The Trust promises to expand it's activities wider; to serve more communities in Bangladesh, as may be considered feasible. It may also promote various other charitable and welfare programs for the benefit of underprivileged youth.

This year AEDT and Scholastica will provide financial assistance to 84 students. Among them, six students of Scholastica will be awarded Merit Scholarships, which entails a waiver for all costs related to their education, including transportation. AEDT also received a donation from BRAC Bank and Shaheed Khalek & Major Salek Bin Uttam Trust to support this assistance to students.

Mr. Mosharraf Hossain, in his brief speech emphasized on providing quality education .Mr. Syed Maher Murshed, one of the founders of AEDT and Acting Chairperson and Managing Director of ASCENT group, also spoke at the program.

Leading academics, entrepreneurs and businessmen of the country as well as management personnel from Scholastica also attended the program.

The scholarship program was followed by a cultural show participated by the Scholastica students.


Workshop on Creative Writing in ULAB

The University of Liberal Art Bangladesh's Department of English and Humanities (DEH) organized a Workshop on Creative Writing for ULAB students from 7-16 August, 2008. Fifteen students took part in the workshop.

Maria Chaudhuri, a promising New York-based writer, conducted the week-long workshop. She is presently doing her MFA in Creative Writing at Goddard College, Vermont, USA.

In the workshop Mrs. Chaudhuri lectured on character, voice, plot and setting, and scene and structure as required elements in writing fiction. Mrs. Chaudhuri inspired the students to engage themselves in writing fiction. She also examined some of the sample writings of the participants. Participants also worked on developing their own individual style of writing.

On the concluding day at the session's end, Mrs. Chaudhuri was thanked by Professor Mohit Ul Alam, Head of DEH, for the good work she had done, and was urged to collaborate with ULAB in the future. The participants thoroughly enjoyed the sessions.


Proud Achievement of the IUB Family

IUB is the place for achievers who are backed by integral creativity, innovation and exquisite capability to excel at the highest level. Two IUBians, one an adjunct faculty member and the other a student, have glorified the name of IUB at the national level. Mr. Junaid Halim, Adjunct faculty in the Department of Media and Communication under the School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (SLASS) was honored by the Government of Bangladesh as the Best Film Editor in 2008 for a 2004 film. We are enthralled by this achievement. We congratulate Mr. Junaid Halim for receiving this just award. Mr Junaid Halim is a teacher who is extremely respected by the students and the other faculty members here at IUB as an expert in his crafts. He has proven his talent for film and cinema time and again. But this award has infused us with pride and joy.

Yousuf Khan Prince, an IUBian has carried the name of IUB in the immensely popular singing competition, “Channel I Shera Khontho 2008”. Yousuf had amazed all the judges and mesmerized the audience with his acutely tuned voice. He has won millions of hearts with his expert vocal practices and we are proud to have him as a student of IUB.

IUB have always been an institute that encourages creativity and cultural values. The concept of Liberal Arts at IUB inspires its students to venture into various fields of intellectual prosperity.


Two American Professors join EDU as Advisors

Duggan Distinguished Professor Dr. Chester A. Newland of School of Policy, Planning and Development of the University Southern California (USC), Los Angeles, and Professor Dr. David L. Woodruff of Graduate School of Management, University of California, Davis (UC Davis), have agreed to serve on the Board of Advisors of East Delta University (EDU), Chittagong. Both of them are scholars of the highest grade. Dr. Newland is an internationally reputed expert in the field of human resource management. In addition to his scholarly writing and teaching, he also served as President of the American Soviet of Public Administration (ASPA), Director of the US Federal Executive Institute (Washington, DC) and the Editor-in-Chief of the Public Administration Review. On the other hand, Dr. Woodruff is an expert of highest standing in the field of Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management. He is a Professor and also holds the office of the Associate Dean of Graduate School of Management at UC Davis, especially in-charge of its world class MBA programs meant for the professionals working in industrial engineering organization in the US and else where in the world. Both Professors Newland and Woodruff are expected to come to Chittagong soon to give a series of seminars in their respective fields of expertise as well as to help EDU develop its management curricula matching the global standard with the objective of facilitating a program of student transfer from EDU to USC, LA and UC Davis.


Orientation program of DU MBA

The orientation program of MBA 1st batch, Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management, Faculty of Business Studies, University of Dhaka was held on Saturday, August 30,2008 at The Radisson Water Garden Hotel Dhaka. Mr. Mahbub Jamil, Special Assistant to the honourable Chief Advisor, Ministry of Aviation and Tourism, Government of People's Republic of Bangladesh was present to grace the occasion as the chief guest. Mr Shafique Alam Mehdi, Chairman, Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation and Prof.Dr Abbas Ali Khan, Dean, Faculty of Business Studies, University of Dhaka attended the program as special guests. Prof. Dr Md. Asraful Islam Chowdhury,Chairman, Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management Faculty of Business Studies, University of Dhaka and all the faculty members and students of the department was also present at the ceremony.


Freshers' Reception '08 at DCC

The student's council of D.C.C arranged a freshers' reception for the students of class 11 of Dhaka City College (D.C.C) on 28 August 2008. The honorable principle of D.C.C. was the chairman of the show and honorable Abu Solaiman Chowdhury was the chief guest.

The programme started at about 9:30am. Associate Professor of the Bangla department, Mr.Mouin Uddin Ahmed, was the presenter of the show. The entire programme was divided into four events - "Pushpo Porbo", "Boktrita Porbo", "Shongit Porbo" and "Khaoya Daoya Porbo". Prof.Khandoker Zohirul Hoque, chairman of the students' council of D.C.C, spoke on the occasion. Special guest artist Hyder Hossain performed in the event. The teachers and the students joined in all the arrangements spontaneously.


ISD excels in the IB Exams

Grade-12 students of the International School Dhaka have excelled in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Examinations with a 96% pass rate this year. This is against 78% for the world at large. The IB Graduates from ISD are now going on to pursue higher education in Bangladesh and abroad.


BAU Founding Anniversary Celebrated

Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) celebrated its 48th founding anniversary with a series of programmes on August 17-18.

The programmes included exhibition of historical photographs at BAU Library, children's painting competition, essay competition for the students, blood group detection programme organized by Badhan, feature exhibition by BAU journalists, colorful rally, releasing fish fry and tree plantation, video exhibition based on University activities, cultural function, Inter-Faculty Debate Competition and prize distribution. The Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Hossain formally inaugurated the BAU First Gate on the occasion.

Organized by the Students Affairs Division, a colorful rally led by the Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Akhtar Hossain and participated by former Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Mosharrf Hossain Mian, Students Affairs Adviser Professor Dr. Md. Abul Khair Choudhury, students, teachers, officers and employees and other socio cultural organizations went round the campus.


Debate for Democracy and St. Gregory's Debating Club jointly organized the '1st Dhaka Interschool Debate Competition 2008'. The photo shows the prize distribution ceremony where ACC Chief Lt. Gen. (retd.) Hasan Mashhud Choudhury, Headmaster of the school Brother Robi Purification and other distinguished guests were present.
