CU to be transformed into a high-tech institution

The Chittagong University authorities will strengthen and expand its Internet facility on the campus in order to make the university a high-tech institution, Vice Chancellor Prof M Badiul Alam has said. Earlier, the authorities sent a letter to the government with a proposal of a project to set up a fiber optic based local area network on the campus. The Internet speed will be faster if the project is implemented. At the annual senate meeting recently, the VC also said the authorities are planning to introduce Internet based telecommunication system at the university. The VC also mentioned that CU has reached agreements with different foreign universities of Norway and Pakistan for joint link programmes.


AIUB English department adds two creative feathers to its cap

In an informal-yet-vibrant mood of festivity, the English department of AIUB launched the English Speaking Club (ESC) and the English Writing Club (EWC) on 16 September at the Campus-1 auditorium. Dr. Charles Villanueva, Dean of Arts & Social Sciences; the Guest of Honor Mr. Shahnoor Wahid, Editor, Star Campus Magazine; and Dr. Faheem Hasan Shahed, Head of the English department, addressed the full house audience which comprised students of all disciplines and faculty members of the English department. Both clubs will be run and maintained by the English department under the guidance of faculty moderators: Ms. Rumana Islam & Ms. Fahrima Rinku (for ESC) and Ms. Syeda Farzana Hafsa & Mr. Quamrul Hassan Chowdhury (for EWC).

In his immaculately captivating Filipino inflexions, Dr. Charles Villanueva delivered an encouraging speech to explain why and how the power of speaking and writing would make Bangladeshi students 'truly internationalist workforce'. He appreciated the efforts of the English department in dragging students into creative pursuits one after another through numerous innovative activitiesparticularly the ongoing 'English in Action' literary competition. Interestingly, it is Dr. Charles who conceptualized this competition few semesters back.

Mr. Shahnoor Wahid in his speech stressed the importance of reading classics and quality discourses in fostering critical thinking. Narrating his personal experience of extensive reading since childhood, he explained the joy of critical thinking in student life. Mr. Wahid categorically highlighted the need of dictionary consultation for learning new words perfectly. 'Find the joy of exploring new words…it is like a game!' he told. He assured the ESC and EWC members of all cooperation on his part provided, they live up to the spirit of creativity.


NUB MBA Orientation

The Orientation Ceremony of MBA (Executive Program), offered jointly by Northern University Bangladesh (NUB) and Bangladesh Institute of Administration and Management (BIAM), was held at the BIAM auditorium on 15 September 2008. Mr Md Mosleh Uddin, Secretary of Ministry of Establishment, was present as the chief guest at the orientation ceremony. M Abu Bakar Siddique, Vice Chancellor, presided over the ceremony while Dr Mohamad Sadique, Director General (BIAM) and Prof MA Razzaque, Dean, Faculty of Business, were present as special guests. Among others Prof Dr Nurul Islam, Dean, Faculty of Science; Prof Dr Saddruddin Ahmed, Dean, Faculty of Arts & Humanities; Prof Dr AWM Abdul Huq, Dean Faculty of Law; Senior teacher of different faculties and government official were also present on the occasion.


Seminar on Subtropical Urban Bird Densities

College of Agriculture organized a seminar on Subtropical Urban Bird Densities at the Conference Hall of International University of Business Agriculture and Technology (IUBAT). Dr McFarlane, Consulting Ecologist of USA and visiting Professor of IUBAT, spoke on the occasion. He called for maintaining proper care to increase the density of birds in the urban areas stressing on organized measures for keeping ecological and environmental balance. Prof. Dr M Alimullah Miyan Vice-Chancellor presided over the function. Academics, researchers, bird lovers, faculty members and students of the university attended the programme.


MBA Orientation Programme at EWU

The Freshers Orientation Programme of fall 2008 session, MBA of East West University was held in the auditorium of the University on 4 September 2008 at 3:00pm. Professor Dr. Mohammad Sharif, Vice Chancellor of East West University chaired the program. Among others Mr. Shah Mutorza Ali, honorable register of EWU, Professor Dr. Nazrul Islam, Honorable Co-ordinator, Graduate Studies Dept of Business Administration, Dr. Tanbir Ahmed Choudhury, Chairperson, Dept' of Business Administration were present in the orientation.

Dr. Nazrul Islam, Coordinator, MBA Program welcomed the new students and expressed vote of thanks. Khan Ahrar Nabil, Vice President EWU MBA club welcomed the new student in his speech and described the activities of the club. A presentation session was arranged by the MBA club to introduce East West University and MBA club to the newly enrolled students. The whole session was well planned, fruitful and successful because of the hard work and sincere contribution of all the MBA club members.


CUDS Hosts an Iftar Party

Chittagong University Debating Society (CUDS) hosted an Iftar Party on 11th September at Sayman Restaurant at Chittagong. Dr. Abdullah Al Faruque, Chairman, Department of Law, CU, was the Chief Guest of the event whereas Dr. Andrew Alok Kumar Dewari, Assistant Professor, Department of Communication and Journalism, CU; Md. Afzal Hossain, Chairman and Assistant Professor, Department of Psychology, CU; Shahbuddin Neepu, Lecturer, Department of Communication and Journalism, CU; Ehsan Jewel, President, CU Journalist Association, Masud Bakul, President, Drishti Chittagong; Subinoy Dutta, APO, TIB; were the special guests. The event was attended by distinguished teachers from CU, representatives of CU Journalist Association, Drishti Chittagong, TIB, YPSA and the past and present members of CUDS.

Rowshan Jahan Umme Fatema Moon, Vice-President, CUDS and Tanvir Zaman, Convener of the Iftar Party also spoke at the occasion while the party was presided over by Md. Mozammel Ali Chowdhury Jamshed, Organising Secretary of CUDS. The guests wished CUDS a very successful journey and showed their immense desire to work closely with CUDS in near future. They also contributed their valuable suggestions for the upcoming programs of CUDS. Welcoming their gesture CUDS discussed the modes of the proposed cooperation and extended its desire to go a long way together. The entire event was anchored by CUDS member Jinia Akter.


Ph.D Degree awarded

Mr. Atan Kumar Nath obtained Ph.D. Degree in “E Commerce” from Luleo University in Sweden. His subject of research was “A trust privacy model of customers' willingness to be profiled and to transact online: theoretical model and empirical estimation” His main supervisor was professor Moiz Limayen and co-supervisor professor Esmail Salehi Sangeri. He has recently joined as a lecturer in the University of Surrey in U.K.

Mr. Atanu Kumar Nath is an M.B.A. from the Institute of Business Administration of Dhaka University. He was a student of Govt. Laboratory High School, Dhaka and Dhaka College.
