HOPES Scholars meets at SAU

Speakers at a prestigious scholarship award ceremony said that globalization has opened up many new opportunities for talented students studying at different higher educational institutions of the country. This ceremony constitutes an excellent prospect to highlight the achievements of youth who have come a long way. The speakers said this while addressing the scholarship awarding ceremony held at the conference hall of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU) in Dhaka recently.

The scholarship awarding ceremony titled 'Helping Organization for Promising and Energetic Students' (HOPES) was chaired by HOPES President Professor Dr. Nur Mohammad Talukder of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) in Mymensingh.

Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Haji Mohammad Danesh University of Science and Technology (HSTU) Dinajpur and Founder General Secretary HOPES Professor Dr. Md. Afzal Hossain highlighted the aims and objectives with a brief history of the formation of the HOPES Scholarship. Educationist of international repute and former Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) Professor Emeritus Dr. Iqbal Mahmud, Former Ambassador A B M Abdus Salam, SAU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Shah-E- Alam, Mr. Enayetuddin Md. Kaiser Khan, Professor Abdul Jalil Sarker, Professor Dr. Abdur Rab, Professor Sabiha Islam, MS. Shyma Chowdhury and other eminent industrialists and donors spoke on the occasion.

A total of 110 meritorious students from different educational institutions including universitiesa and Medical Colleges were awarded HOPES scholarship at the ceremony.

The newly established research center “Center for Inter-Religious and Inter-Cultural Dialogue (CIID) of Dhaka University and Universal Peace Federation (UPF), an International organization of Bangladesh Chapter, jointly organized a seminar entitled “Leadership in Diverse World: Respect & Tolerance” on 1 November 2008 at R.C Mojumdar Auditorium, Dhaka University. Professor Dr. Shamser Ali, Scientist, Theologian and Vice Chancellor of Southeast University presented papers on the occasion as the key note speaker.

Historian Dr. Sayed Anwar Hossain, Professor of History, Dhaka University, Dr. Dalem Chandra Barman, Founding Chair and Professor of Peace & Conflict Studies, Dhaka University, Dr. A.N.M Abdul Manan Khan Professor of Arabic, Dhaka University and Professor Eva Sadia Saad, Chairperson of World Religions department, Dhaka University were present here on the discussion panel. The seminar was moderated by Director of CIID and Founding Chair of Department of World Religions, D.U Professor Dr. Kazi Nurul Islam. About 200 faculties, students of different departments of Dhaka University and about 30 members from UPF attended the seminar.

Blood donation at NSU

Vice Chancellor of NSU Dr. Hafiz G. A. Siddiqi opened the Blood Donation Camp through cutting the red ribbon. Then students of NSU started to enter the camp and donate their blood. The first donor of the blood donation camp was a student named Brishti. That donation started the line of several donors who donated their valuable blood and created opportunities for millions who are in need of blood to live a healthy life. Volunteers from both NSUSSC and Quantum Foundation worked considerably hard to get as much donors as they could.

Seminar on Arsenic uptake research plants held at RU

The Institute of Biological Sciences of Rajshahi University (RU) organized a seminar on current research on arsenic uptake in plants in association with Skovde University, Sweden on Oct.14 on the campus.

Acting Vice Chancellor of RU Prof. Mamnunul Keramat inaugurated the program as the chief guest of the seminar.

Prof. Dr. Dennis Larsson and Prof. Abul Mandal, school of life science ,University of Skovde, Sweden were present at he seminar as guest speakers .

Prof. Dennis Larsson presented his keynotes on Biomedicine while Prof. Abdul Mandal spoke on the current research on arsenic uptake in plants.

The seminar was presided over by the director of Institute of Biological Sciences Prof.M.A.Bari Miah .

Also spoke on the occasion former member of Pubic Service Commission Prof. Shahadat Hossain Mondol, Prof. M. Shahjahan, Prof. Hafizzaman, Prof. Wahedul Islam and others.

The foreign delegates informed that they were very much interested to sign a memorandum of understanding between Rajshahi University and Skovde University to exchange research, teachers and students very shortly.

About 500 students and teachers of several departments were present at the seminar.

Star Campus - Drishty School of Debate Registrations Open

Star Campus and Drishty Chittagong are proud to announce its 5th batch of 'School of Debate' under the sensational debating series 'Star Campus Drishty Debate for Generation Next 2008 2009,' exclusively for English Medium students. Students of classes seven to twelve are invited to participate in this training and grooming session, that will consume16 classes, that is, two months approx. Top-class debaters from Dhaka and Chittagong who participated in Worlds' and National debate championships are going to be in the trainer's panel. Inter batch football final at JU

The final of the “A B M Omar Sharif Smiriti Football Tournament” between 19th and 20th batch of pharmacy Department of Jahangirnagar University (JU) was held at Bangabandhu Hall playground on November 2.

The 20th batch lifted the title defeating 19th batch by a margin of 3-2 goals in the tie-breaker. Ashik, Moshi and Mamun each netted one goal for the winning team while Arunav and Halim scored two goals for 19th batch. The full-time play went without any goal.

Tanmoy, custodian of 20th batch was adjusted man of the final for his excellent performance. Milon and Arunav were selected as best scorers of the tournament while Atunu of 19th batch was awarded Man of the Tournament trophy for his outstanding performance in the whole tournament. A total of four existing batches took part in the tournament.

Dr. Sukalyan Kumar Kundu, Associate professor of JU Pharmacy Department was present at the final as chief guest. Later the chief guest distributed champion and runners-up trophies.

Career in Call Center

Prothom-alo.jobs and United International University jointly arranged a seminar in United International University. The Topic of the Seminar was "Career and Investment Opportunity in Call Center: Bangladesh perspective". The Seminar Partners were United International University Entrepreneur Forum and AICC Call Center.

Possibilities of call center business and employment opportunity in Bangladesh and how Bangladesh can utilize these possibilities in the practical field were the main subject of the seminar. Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Md. Rezwan Khan, Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Chowdhury Mofizur Rahman, Dean of Business School Professor Dr. Habibur Rahman, Assistant Professor Mohammad Behroz Ali and Asst. 'State intervention a must for autistic children's social acceptability'

Speakers at a function recently called for state intervention to ensure care and education of the autistic children and create public awareness for their social acceptability. People think autistic children are mentally retarded, but actually they have intelligence and they require only special care for their development, said the speakers, calling for mass campaign to ensure their rights. The cultural function under the banner of 'Share with Innocence III' was organised by Hello's Association of Neophyte Students (HANS) at Biam auditorium in the city. Students from Autistic Welfare Foundation, Beautiful Mind, Caring Glory, Kalyani, School for Gifted Children and Society for Welfare of Autistic Children rendered songs, dance and recitations at the cultural function attended by the parents of autistic children and teachers of the specialised schools.

"Autism is a problem worldwide. In USA, one in every 150 people is autistic. Though there is no statistics on autism in Bangladesh, the number would not be very small," said eminent writer Dr Muhammad Zafar Iqbal.
Talking to journalists, he said these children need special schools for development, but there are only a few such schools in Dhaka and Chittagong which are also very expensive.

“There should be state interventions in setting up such schools and help autistic children enter the mainstream schools gradually," said Dr Zafar Iqbal, professor of computer science and engineering at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology. Speaking as special guest at the programme, Dr Kamal Abdun Naser Chowdhury, director general of social services department, said he was amazed to see the talents of the autistic children. These children should get more attention of the society for their development, he added. "Autistic children have their own world of imagination and are detached from the real world. But they get to know the reality through special care and education," Naser Chowdhury said, adding that an institution for autistic children could be established under public-private partnership. It is only the well-off families that can help their children, but the autistic children of the poorer sections of the society should also be provided with this care, he added. Autistic Welfare Foundation Chairperson Dr Rawnak Hafiz said, "Our aim is to let people know about autism so that these children are not lost in the society. They have every right to development and to participate in the mainstream public. We want to ensure it." With a little help, these children could be eligible in mainstream schools, she said, adding, "We want a meaningful and happy life for them." HANS Chairperson Meer Soharabul Hossain also spoke at the function dedicated to the families having autistic children. The programme was supported by Rahimafrooz (Bangladesh) Ltd.

IUBian joins Youth Festival in Tokyo

IUBian Farha Khan joins the 6th Asian Youth Forum (AYF), taking place from the 28th of October till the 4th of November 2008 at the National Olympics Memorial Youth Center in Tokyo, Japan. AYF plans to do a week long youth conference bringing together college-aged students from across Asia like Korea, Thailand, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Vietnam and Russia, for Academic seminars, intercultural workshops, social events and interpersonal exchanges. AYF aims to promote intercultural communication, international understanding, Asian awareness and leadership skills using English as a Global language.

Farha Khan, a student of Business Administration at IUB also happened to be the first and only student from IUB to have taken place in a program the institute had offered called 'The Study of the U.S. Institutes for Students Leaders' in Summer 2007, a five week study of the U.S. Branch giving better understanding of the people, institution and culture of the United States.
