Seven-day Rag celebration held at JU

The 32nd batch of Jahangirnagar University organized a seven day long rag celebration as the traditional education completion ceremony on the campus. JU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Moniruzzaman inaugurated the weeklong programme as chief guest by releasing pigeons and balloons at the foot of Amar Ekushey, while proctor of JU Professor Mafruhi Chattar; Director of Jahangirnagar University Students and Adviser Center Professor ATM Aticur Rahaman; rag king Khandakar Tanvir Ahmad Moon and rag queen Sarmin Akter Juenny also present at the programme.

The opening function brought out a colorful procession with the enthusiastic participation of out going students, of which the king and the queen were the main attraction. Campfire was also organized beside the Cafeteria at night.

Momotaz Mehdi Ltd. sponsored 5000 tubes of Mehdi for the Mehdi festival, attended by the students under the Mohua tree in front of the new arts building. The out-going students also held a Cultural programme. Pran Beverage Company sponsored a concert featuring two popular musical bands.

NSU seminar on How to Publish in Refereed Journal

A seminar on "How to Publish in Refereed Journal?" has been held on November 23, 2008 at the North South University (NSU) campus. The keynote speaker was Dr. Abu N.M. Wahid, Professor of Economics and Finance, Tennessee State University, and Editor, The Journal of Developing Areas.

Those who want to pursue teaching as a career and excel in it, there is no alternative to research and publication. This seminar was valuable for all faculty members, especially young and budding teachers. For enhanced career growth and achieving professional teaching goals, publication in referred journal is imperative. Graduate students, who have active interest in research and want to engage in teaching profession, found the seminar worthy as well. Dr Gour G. Goswami, Chairman of NSU Economics Department was the coordinator of the seminar.

ACM- ICPC Contest 2008 at NSU

The ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ACM-ICPC) 2008, hosted by North South University (NSU) at Dhaka Site, ended with Fudan University of China as the winner, and BUET, Dhaka University and NSU securing the second through fourth position out of a total of 82 teams. Dr. Zafar Iqbal, announced the ranking of the winners. The top teams will take part in the world finals in Stockholm, Sweden in April 2009.

The BUET Vice Chancellor, Dr. AMM Shafiullah, inaugurated the event on 7 November 2008 at NSU campus. Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed, Governor of Bangladesh Bank, distributed awards as the Chief Guest in the concluding ceremony at a local restaurant on November 8, 2008.

The Bangladesh Bank (BB) Governor pledged wholehearted BB support for the development of ICT based computer programming firms. He mentioned that the country can earn huge foreign currency by exporting software and provide career and financial incentives to young and talented computer programmers. He cited Hyderabad and Bangalore in India as examples of key software hubs.

Seminar on “Development of Hospital Pharmacy in Bangladesh”

Bangladesh Pharmaceutical Society (BPS) organized a seminar on “Development of Hospital Pharmacy in Bangladesh” on 22 November, 2008 at Winter Garden, Dhaka Sheraton Hotel. The seminar focused on the current situation and future action plan for the introduction and development of hospital pharmacy and its educational progress in Bangladesh. Presided over by Mr. Nasser Shahrear Zahedee, President, Bangladesh Pharmaceutical Society (BPS), the seminar was addressed by Mr. Prafull D. Sheth, Vice President, International Pharmaceutical Society (FIP), Mr. Anwar Hossain Munshi, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of People's Republic of Bangladesh, Prof. Azizul Haque, President, Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA), Prof. Dr. Md. Abdur Rashid, General Secretary, Bangladesh Pharmaceutical Society and Dean, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Dhaka, eminent pharmacist Prof. Dr. Chowdhury Mahmood Hasan and experts on Hospital Pharmacy from India, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh. More than one thousand Pharmacists and health professionals from home and abroad participated in the seminar.

Bangladesh Pharmaceutical Society (BPS) is the national professional body of Pharmacists engaged in various facets of the profession of Pharmacy. BPS is committed to promoting the highest professional and ethical standards of Pharmacy. It is actively participating in the different committees of the government. BPS works very closely with the Bangladesh Pharmacy Council, Ministry of Health and many other pharmaceutical industries. Bangladesh Pharmaceutical Society (BPS) has been pursuing the case of establishing the hospital pharmacy system in Bangladesh for the last seventeen years. The development of hospital pharmacy in Bangladesh is still at a very initial stage.

BIT student wins top essay prize

Bangladesh International Tutorial is delighted that one of their Class IX pupils has won first prize in the World Postal Forum and UNESCO letter-writing competition. What was demanded was unusual in both form and topic but the creativity that the school encourages, plus the talent of Bushra Srabasti Hossain, proved invincible. BIT is especially proud because, compared to many schools, it is quite small with only 2,700 pupils in 10 (?) sections. Both second and third prizes went to Holy Cross School.

The literary form was a letter of 500-1000 words and the topic was “Why the world needs tolerance.” Several pupils in BIT, who were under 15 on April 30th, took up the challenge and wrote such excellent essays that the school was spoilt for the choice as to which two essays to select to send.

Bushra is the Head Perfect of the Girls' Section and the Headmistress, Angela Robinson, describes her as 'an excellent all-round, mature and thoughtful student.' Although she had five years in Canada, while her father studied there, she is a permanent resident in Bangladesh one of the criteria for entry. She told Mrs Robinson, “In my schools in Toronto and also Montreal, I knew what it was like to be in a racial minority.” As she wrote in her essay, “Not only did anyone want to make friends with me - because of my skin color but I was constantly made fun of because I still made mistakes when I spoke French. However, I was tolerant and did not say anything. Pretty soon, those kids got tired of it and stopped.

However, her essay also pointed out that intolerance can be in a good cause, such as the Liberation War when Bengali people did not tolerate Urdu being the state language. One of her final sentences is, “We all suffer some form of intolerance at some time in our lives.”

EWU MBA Club Publishes Wall Magazine

EWU MBA Club arranged a grand opening on the occasion of publishing a wall magazine on 3 November at. Mr. Animesh Kundu, Managing Diector, Otobi graced the occasion by cutting the ribbon in the Launching Ceremony. Professor Dr. Nazrul Islam, Co-ordinator, Graduate Studies, Dr. Tanbir Ahmed Choudhury, Chairperson, and Kamrul Hassan, Assistant Professor, Dept' of Business Administration, EWU was also present to grace the occasion.

EWU MBA Club creates the platform for MBA students to discover their feelings through their stories, business articles, pictures, sketches and poems. Some other issues like awareness for AIDS, knowing Bangladeshi tourist spots etc were also included in the wall magazine. The ceremony ended by Dr. Nazrul Islam handing over a crest to Mr. Animesh Kundu as a token of appreciation.

Cultural Festival at KUET

Lalon Shah Hall, KUET, arranged a three-day long cultural festival at the hall premises. The program kicked off with pf contest of recitation from the holy Quran. Nat-E-Rasule, Extempore, funny debates were the other events of the day. Poem recitation, acting and singing were the events of the second day. The stage was open for all to dance in the final day. The program was rounded up with the presentation of an open stage drama named Chowrasta, written by Malay Bhowmick.

Honorable V. C Prof. Dr. Nowser Ali Morol was present as the chief guest. Provost of the hall Dr. Golam Kader, Asst. provost Dr. Mohammed Mashud and other teachers were also present at the final of the event.

National Workshop at BAU

A daylong National Workshop of the USDA funded project 'Characterization, Conservation, and Improvement of Red Chittagong Cattle of Bangladesh' has been held at the Faculty of Animal Husbandry of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) on November 22. Mr. Syed Ataur Rahman, Secretary, Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, was the chief guest while Professor Dr. M. A. Sattar, Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh Agricultural University, was present as chief patron at the inaugural function of the workshop. The Workshop was chaired by Professor Dr. Md. Shahid Ullah Talukder, Director BAU Research System, while Mr. Md. Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan, Additional Secretary,ERD, Ministry of Finance, Mr. Ad Spijkers, FAO Representative in Bangladesh, and Mr. Theophil Hajong, Operations Director, World Vision Bangladesh, were the special guests at the function. Professor Dr. Md. Ali Akbar, Dean, Faculty of Animal Husbandry delivered the welcome address. Professor Dr. A.K. Fazlul Haque Bhuiyan and Professor Dr. Syed Sakhawat Husain spoke on the occasion.

School of Business Studies of Southeast University arranged a Seminar on 'Publishing Papers in International Journals' on 23rd November in the Conference Room. Dr. Abu N.M. Wahid, Professor of Economics and Finance, Tennessee State University, and Editor, The Journal of Developing Areas, presented the keynote paper. Professor Dr. M. Shamser Ali, Vice-Chancellor, Southeast University, was the chief guest of the occasion while Professor Abu Ahmed, Pro-Vice Chancellor, SEU, was the special guest. Professor Dr. Syed Masud Husain, Dean, School of Business Studies, presided over the meeting. Professor Dr. Shahjahan Khan, Department of Statistics and Mathematical Sciences, University of Southern Queensland, Australia, was also present at the event.
