Workshop on Film, Appreciation and Criticism

INTERNATIONAL film critic Barbara Lorey de Lacharrière conducted a 3-day workshop on "Film, Appreciation, and Criticism" from 22-24 December 2008 at ULAB's Media Studies and Journalism Department.

Participants included students and faculties from across ULAB departments, local film students and film journalists. The workshop was based on an active-learning model, where the participants were asked to work through specific issues regarding film in small groups along with Ms. Lorey's guidance. Many international films were screened during the workshop, especially high-quality independent films from Turkey, Germany, and UK.

Barbara Lorey de Lacharrière is a Paris-based freelance journalist and film-critic for leading German and Swiss newspapers and periodicals, specializing in cultural reporting and film criticism. She is also the head of Alizarine Productions, which produces photo exhibitions and documentaries.


The 29th AGM of BACE

The 29th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of BACE (Bangladesh Association for Community Education) the well-known Non-Government voluntary Organization was held recently at the Reporter's Unity Auditorium in Topkhana, Shegunbagicha.

Jalal Uddin Ahmed, Chairman of BACE National Committee and the President, Board of Directors East West University, presided over the meeting.

The co-chairman of the meeting was Professor Fazlul Karim Patwari.

Among others who spoke on the occasion were former Secretary and ex PSC Chairman Al Hussaini, founder of the Gono Shasthya Kendra, Zafrullah Chowdhury, the acting director of the Campaign for Mass Literacy, Md Azizul Haque and director of BACE Md Badrul Islam.

Vice Chairman of BACE Board of Directors M A Khair was the co-ordinator of the program.


Radiant Int. School Participates in Diabetes Awareness Program

On November 18, 2008 a group of doctors from BIRDEM visited Radiant Int. school to conduct a diabetes awareness programme and a screening test for children of 10 years and above. This was to commemorate the World Diabetes Day, which was on November 14.

Prof. Najmun Nahar, Director Clinical Services gave a lecture in a very simple and easy language to explain about the reasons, prevalence and control of diabetes. The students followed every word with rapt attention and later asked questions to clarify some points about this metabolic disorder.

This lecture was followed by a screening programme to survey the height, weight, eating habits, family history and random blood sugar tests of the children. The enthusiasm of the children was so infectious that even those who are scared of going to doctors came forward for the tests. The programme helped the children learn about a disease which is on the rise due to the modern eating habits and very little physical activity.


Rafia receives Gold Medal for scoring highest CGPA in BBA from IBA

Rafia Afrin, a student of 12th Batch of BBA programme of the Institute of Business Administration (IBA), University of Dhaka received Gold Medal for securing first position, scoring record CGPA at the graduation ceremony, held on Friday, November 28, 2008 at the Bangladesh China Friendship Convention Centre (BCFCC). Prof S.M.A Faiz, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Dhaka gave away the Medal and certificates among the successful students, while Mr. Syed Abu Naser Bukhtear Ahmed, Managing Director & CEO of Agrani Bank was present on the occasion as the Special Guest. Dr. Mohammad Zeaulhaq Mamun, Director, IBA Presided over the ceremony.

Rafia, a brilliant student althrough scored record CGPA and stood first in her batch. She received 'A' grades in all her 'O' and 'A' level examinations and scored world highest number in Accounting in 'O' level examination.


National Leadership Development Seminar 2009

On January 5 AIESEC Bangladesh organized a press conference sponsored by ACME Group of Industries. The National Leadership Development Seminar (NLDS) is one of the biggest and most important conferences in the calendar of AIESEC Bangladesh. National Leadership Development Seminar was a 4 day long seminar aimed at developing leadership skills and competencies of all AIESEC members in Bangladesh. The number of delegates present at the conference were about 200-250. These delegates were university students studying in programs like Business Administration, Economics, Computer Science and Engineering, Law, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Media and Communications etc. The theme of National Leadership Development Seminar (NLDS) 2009 is 'Youth Towards Sustainability' and will be offering delegates from over 30 different countries. The conference will go on from January 7 to 10. The venue of the conference is Zastat Holiday Resort, Sylhet, Bangladesh. The agenda of the conference consists of various kinds of sessions such as AIESEC training, leadership development and management, sustainability, CSR. It will also focus on issue-based projects, which will solve various problems faced by the society such as, poverty, illiteracy, and HIV AIDS etc. One of the key aims of this conference is to enhance the skills and competencies of AIESECers so that they become 'change agents' for the society. A team of international speakers will also be present to facilitate the conference.

Mr. Mohammad Rafiqul Islam, Director, Marketing & Sales, ACME laboratories Ltd. will be facilitating a session and Mr Asif Ainul Hoque, Head of HR, ACME Laboratories Ltd. will be present on January 9 during the seminar.

The partners for this event are Star Campus, Radio Foorti, Olympic Group, Nestle Bangladesh and Zastat Holiday Resort.


Journal of scientific research published at RU

Oxford International Network Organization of UK published a scientific research based international journal through a grand publication ceremony at Ahmed Hossain gallery of 1st science Building of Rajshahi University (RU) on 1 January. RU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Mamnunul Keramat as the Chief Guest of the program upheld the first online edition of the scientific research based journal. Eminent scientist and former Vice Chancellor of International Islamic University of Chittagong Prof. A.K.M Azharul Islam is the editor-in-chief of the journal. Prof. A.K.M Azharul Islam also conducted a multimedia presentation regarding the content of the journal. Among others Prof. Abul Hasem, Dean of the Science Faculty also spoke on the program.


US Professor talks at IUBAT

Dr. Mohammed A. Alim, Professor of Alabama A&M University of USA delivered a lecture at International University of Business Agriculture and Technology (IUBAT) at the Conference Hall on 27 December as a guest speaker. He presented deliberations highlighting Surge Protection Devices for electrical transmission and distribution system Presided over by Prof. Dr. Alimullah Miyan, Vice-Chancellor, the program was attended among others by Professor Mahmuda Khanam, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Eng. Abul Bashar, Chair, Department of Electrical and Electronic Members of Faculty, Resource Persons and students of the university.

Lecture on corruption at ULAB

Corruption is a major setback in our country. The youth, the future leaders of the country, can play a vital role in creating a social movement against corruption. To let the students have a general idea of corruption, its forms, its impact, and to raise awareness against corruption University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh organized a lecture session on December 22, 2008 at ULAB auditorium. Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, Executive Director of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB), was the speaker on the topic. Students, faculty members and officials of ULAB were present in the occasion.

In his lecture titled 'Fighting Corruption in Bangladesh: Creating Demand for Change' with a multimedia presentation Dr. Zaman discussed about various types of corruption, achievements in fighting corruption in Bangladesh, activities of TIB, and how corruption is harming the poor mostly. He told that the access to amenities like education, health, justice and individual safety became a function of the capacity to make unauthorized payments.Thus the poor are most adversely affected by corruption. Dr. Zaman showed with some cartoons drawn by the young children how they are perceiving corruption and raising their voice against it. After his lecture Dr. Zaman responded to audience on issues like the present anti-corruption drive, its relation to economic unrest, and the protection of corruption fighters.


MMC introduces new microbiology technology

The Microbiology Department of Mymensingh Medical College has entered into a new era by introducing new medical equipment known as Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) machine on 24 November. This technology was introduced in collaboration with Prof. Dr. Nobumichi Kobaychi, Department of Micro-biology of Supporo Medical College in Japan. This biotechnology is first ever of its kind to be introduced among the government and private medical colleges of the country and third after ICDDR'B and BIRDEM in Dhaka. It will help to diagnose MDR, TB, Hepatitis and many other diseases accurately. A three-day scientific workshop from November 24 to November 26 also held at the auditorium of MMC. Head of the MMC Microbiology Department Prof. Dr. Akram Hossain coordinated the workshop. Among others Associate Professor Dr. AKM Musa, Assistant Professor Dr. Chand Mahmud and Dr. Shamyol Kumar Paul of MMC Micro-biology department were present at the workshop.

Software Exhibition at Daffodil International University

The Department of CSE, CIS & CS of Daffodil International University organized a “Software Exhibition 2008” on 18 December. A total of five teams comprising of fourteen students participated in the exhibition. The projects demonstrated in the exhibition were System Maintenance, E-Market. BD DIU Fee Maintenance System, Web based Inventory and Sales Monitoring System, Grade Sheet Generator, Sales and Stock Control System of a Business Organization, DIU Online Tiffin Service.

Mr. Md. Sabur Khan, Governing body Chairman, Daffodil International University was present at the exhibition. Dr. Md. Fokhray Hossain, Head of the Department and Dr. Yusuf M. Islam, Associate Professor were also present. Ahmed Shamsul Arefin, Sr. Lecturer of the Department, coordinated the exhibition.
