BAU Orientation Program held

Speaking as chief guest at the orientation ceremony of the newly admitted students of the Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) under six Faculties held at the Shilpachariya Zainul Abedin auditorium Professor Nazrul Islam, Chairman of the University Grants Commission, said inclusion of land resource studies in the agricultural syllabus is needed under modern global perspective for proper land utilization of Bangladesh in order to augment agricultural production.

Presided over by the Students Affairs Adviser Professor Dr. Md. Abul Khair Chowdhury the inaugural function was attended by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. M. A. Sattar Mandal as the chief Patron. It was addressed among others by Local Syndicate Member and Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology Professor Dr. Md. Shams-Ud-Din, Convener Council of Provosts Professor Dr. Md. Mokbul Hossain, Proctor Professor Dr. Mohammed Shamsuddin and Registrar Md. Nazibur Rahman and Dr. A.K. M. Zakir Hossain.


Seminar on balanced food for students at DIU

A seminar titled “Balanced Food for Students” was held at Daffodil International University on February 03, 2009. It was jointly organised by the Department of English, DIU, and the Susthota, a health organisation. The purpose of the seminar was to make students aware of their health concerns. Mr. Almasur Rahman, a health writer and researcher, presented the keynote speech. With Professor Dr. Aminul Islam, Vice-Chancellor of Daffodil International University, in the chair, the seminar was addressed by Professor Dr. Subhagata Choudhury, Director, Laboratory Services, BIRDEM, as chief guest.

Among others, Dr. Wahiduzzaman, life style specialist, Dr. Billal Hossain, Project Consultant, Applied Dietetics and Food Technology, DIU, Dr. Zobaida Akhter, Professor, Bangladesh Open University, Mr. Jamil Ahmed, Director, Communication, Relations and Media, CARE Bangladesh, spoke as special guests. Professor Dr. Mizanur Rahman, Registrar of Daffodil International University, was also present.

Dr. GKM Rifatullah and Dr. Nabonita made a presentation on oral health. Rifat's Dental, CMD & Prognos Clinic offered free dental checkup for students on the sideline of the seminar.

Dr. Binoy Barman, Head of the Department of English, DIU, delivered the welcome speech and Professor Dr. Shusil Kumar Das, Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Science, gave the vote of thanks. Mr. Shams Ud Duha, General Secretary of Susthota, conducted the programme. The seminar emphasized higher consumption of fibrous foods and vegetables.


Orientation Programme of BBA, SUST

Business Administration Department of Shahjalal University Of Science & Technology (SUST) organized an orientation programme for the 11th batch on 27 January, 2009 in the seminar room of the department. The honorable Dean Prof. Kamal Ahmed Chowdhury inaugurated the programme. The students of 10th batch welcomed the new students with bouquets of roses. Zillur Rahman, lecturer of the department introduced the fresher students with the activities of the department. Jony Khan student of 10th batch shares his feelings with the fresher students on behalf of his batch. Nazrul Islam, head of department of business Administration delivered the ending speech.


Seminar at Gono Bishwabidyalay

A seminar was organized at Gono Bishwabidyalay on February 07, 2009 where Professor Salahuddin Ahmad, Professor and Director of Medical Physics and Dosimetry, Department of Radiation Oncology, Oklahoma University, USA, delivered a lecture on “Scope and Prospective of Medical Physics”. Professor Salahuddin presented an outline of the academic program in Medical Physics and Oncology in the USA. He emphasized on the necessity of a team of physician, a physicist and a therapist for acceptable radiation treatment of cancer. The Vice-Chancellor of the University Prof. Mesbahuddin Ahmad, Prof. Ajoy Roy, Head, Department of Biomedical Engineering and Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury, trustee of the university, attended the seminar. The students of the Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering Department actively participated in the Seminar. Professor Salahuddin had a detailed discussion about the course curricula of the Department. He offered his co-operation to help build up the department and assist the students to sudy in USA. It may be noted that in Bangladesh only Gono Bishwabidyalay offers B.Sc. (Hons) and M. Sc. Courses on Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering.


NSU celebrates Pharmacy Day

The Pharmacy Department of North South University celebrated its birthday on the 24th of January 2009, entering into its fourth year ever since the Bachelor of Pharmacy degree was offered in 2006. The event was organized by the North South University Pharmacy Students' Association (NSUPSA) and was jointly sponsored by Menz Klub and Preston Group. Dr. JMA Hannan, chairman of the department, inaugurated the event. Dr. Hannan welcomed the faculties who have recently joined the department and also ushered in the newly admitted students for the upcoming semester. Shortly after the speech a giant cake weighing 25 pounds was brought forth, surprising the audience. The president of NSUPSA, Fahad Bin Moain, also spoke on the occasion and shared his experience in organizing this spectacular event and thanked everyone for their support. The event then boasted an entertainment packed cultural program throughout the evening. Over 40 performers from different batches captivated the audience with dazzling performances ranging from plays written by students themselves, classical and modern dances, even including solo performers who excited the crowd by playing the flute and reciting poems.


BUDTF organizes Club Fair

BRAC University Drama & Theatre Forum (BUDTF) organized a club fair titled “Britter Baire” on 29 January for the spring semester. The Vice Chancellor Professor Jamilur Reza Choudhury along with the Pro-VC Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed, the Director of student affairs inaugurated the event. Almost all the clubs participated in the club fair. Among different clubs, Entrepreneurship Development Forum (EDF) got an excellent response both from the fresher students & senior students.

Entrepreneurship Development Forum (EDF) is one of the two autonomous clubs of BRAC University along with BIZ BEE (Business Club). EDF's new member recruitment met with huge success as 120 plus new students signed up during the club fair for membership.


IST Launches Computer and Cultural Club

The launching ceremony of Computer And Cultural Club of the Institute Of Science And Technology (IST) was held on Thursday, January 22, at the IST Auditorium. IST Governing body chairman Prof. Dr. Shahida Rafique, the newly elected Dean of Applied Physics and Engineering faculty, University of Dhaka and Advisor Dr. Faruk Ahmed, faculty of Dhaka University and Advisor Dr. Jalalur Rahaman, faculty of Dhaka University and all the faculty members of IST were present at the ceremony. TheComputer and Cultural Club of IST organized a cultural programme at the event.


Farewell to SSC Examinees at Viqarunnisa

The students of Class X of all branches of Viqarunnisa Noon School and College, Dhaka arranged a gorgeous and colourful farewell ceremony to wish this year's SSC candidates a grand success on 19 January 2009 in its school premises. Prof. Rokeya Akter Begum, the honourable principal of the institute, heads of all branches, teachers, pupils were present among other well-wishers of the candidates. The school campus wore a festive look with the decorations and the boisterous movements of the candidates clad in nice outfits. On the beginning of the day, SSC candidates were received with flower bouquets and Manpatras. The Head Girls on behalf of the candidates spoke a few words to express their sorrow on being departed from the school which bore them for ten long years with love and care. The Principal and the Assistant Head Mistress of the school spoke on behalf of the teachers to wish them the very best. The much-awaited cultural programme followed that. After that gift items were distributed among the candidates as a token of their junior's love and commemoration and thus the rapturous day came to an end.


Seminar on Tetracycline Resistant Bacteria held at RU

A daylong seminar on “ Tetracycline Resistant Bacteria and Resistance Gene In Marine Environment” was held at Rajshahi University (RU) on 27 January. The Department of Zoology of RU organized this seminar. Associate professor of Zoology Department Prof. Dr Habibur Rahman presented the keynote paper. Former Vice Chancellor of RU and Prominent zoologist Prof. Dr. M Altaf Hossain attended the seminar as chief guest while the chairman of Zoology Department Prof. Dr. Abdul Mannan presided over the event. Dr. N I M Abdus Salam, Dr. Ataur Rahman, Dr. Mahtab Ali, Dr. A S M Safikur Rahman, Dr. Ananda Kumar Shah, Shah Hossain Ahmaed Mehedi, Dr. Md. Saiful Islam and others spoke on the occasion.
