A discussion meeting and a musical soiree on Ekushey was held at the Gono Bishwabidyalay on 24 February, 2009 (Falgun 12, 1415). The discussion session was presided over by the Vice-Chancellor of the University Professor Mesbahuddin Ahmad. Dr. Halima Khatun, a renowned writer and Treasurer of the University was the Chief Guest and novelist Ahmad Rafique was the special guest. Both the chief guest and the special guest was involved in the language movement of 1952. Professor Mahmud Shah Qureshi, Dean of the Faculty of Basic Science and Social Science, gave the welcome address and emphasized the importance of the day. Professor Ajoy Roy, Head of the department of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering and Doctor Laila Parvin Banoo spoke on the occasion. Both of them expressed their dissatisfaction for our failure in establishing Bangla in every sphere of our life. The special guest Ahmad Rafique in his speech outlined the background of the language movement and the valiant agitation for urging the government to accord Bangla as the state language of Pakistan. He recollected how the students constructed the first Shaheed Minar overnight with bricks, sand and cement lying in the premises of the Dhaka Medical College. He further said that the construction of Shahid Minar as designed by Hamudur Rahman, remains incomplete and hoped that steps will be taken to complete the construction as per design without any further delay.

Professor Halima Khatun recollected the role of the female students of the University during the days of the language movement and personal participation in the movement. Her description about breaking the restriction imposed by clause 144 was deeply appreciated. The Vice-Chancellor in his presidential speech gave a clarion call to the students to be encouraged by sacrifices of the martyrs of the language movement and asked them to bear the responsibility of sustaining the heritage of martyrs and also to face any odds for the good of the country. He further said that our failure to establish Bangla in every sphere of our life is due to our complex mental attitude and negative approach. The issue regarding lack of technical words (Paribhasha) is simply an excuse. He however said that for higher education and research English language should be learned with due seriousness. The chief guest and the special guest distributed prizes among the winners of essay and lecture competitions. The Registrar of the University Mr. Md. Delower Hossain, gave vote of thanks to the guests and the audience.

The discussion session was followed by a musical soiree consisting songs of the Ekushey performed by the students of Gono Bishawbidyalay.
