HSTU celebrates
Pahela Baishakh in Dinajpur

Kongon Karmaker

HE Students of Hajee Danesh Science and Technology University celebrated the Pahela Baishakh for the first time at the university campus holding a festive procession, Panta Utsab and cultural programmes. Professor Dr. Md. Afzal Hossain Vice Chancellor of Hajee Danesh Science and Technology University inaugurated the festival as chief guest by bringing out a procession which paraded within the campus. Students of different faculties held a cultural programme including music, recitation and play which entertained the students the entire day.

To celebrate the festival the students of the University united together to observe the day, which has become a tradition as well as a passion.

The students of the university put their heartiest effort to make it as beautiful as possible and decorated it with fine posters, banners, showpieces, kites and other decorative stuffs. Marking the day, the students published a wall magazine featuring different articles on Pahela Baishakh written by the HSTU students.

The most amazing part of the celebration probably started at around afternoon, when the cultural program was held. The program, organized by HJSTU students on the theme of Pahela Baishakh, was absolutely mind-blowing. It started with a chorus of "esho hey baishakh, esho esho".

Boston University Observes Pahela Baishakh

Sameirah Nasrin Ahsan

THE heart of the Bangladeshi in the US sang with the arrival of Boishakh in the faraway motherland. Boston University Bangladesh Student's Association observed the dawn of the Bengali Year 1416 on April 18, 2009.

They say, “If there is any festivity that unites Bangladeshis it's Pahela Boishakh.” There is indeed truth in that statement. The BU BSA Pohela Boishakh event owes its success to the dedication and hardwork of its members: despite the looming dread of finals, BSA members found time to get together to brainstorm and organize the celebration of Pohala Boishakh.

As the George Sherman Union Back Court glowed with gold, red and green, the Bangladesh flag swayed grandly, silently appreciating the sincere efforts. BSA members adorned traditional outfits: the women wore saari or kameez, and the men wore panjabi. Many students from BU and other neighboring universities: MIT, Harvard, Tufts and Brandeis joined the BU BSA to celebrate the Bengali New Year. The event started with a colorful introduction of Pohela Boishakh which was accompanied by a movie created by BSA's own Massnoon Ishaque. This was followed by a welcome speech by BSA's President Fahim Hamid. Sameirah Ahsan threw in a few words of gratitude towards the BSA members for this initiative and Rezwana Seeham conducted the ceremony like a pro.

Although, this event lacked the typical Boishakhi parades and mela's, BSA's sincere effort made this event a success. This was the fruit of the hardwork of Bangadeshis who truly understand the value of the sentiments surrounding the land that gave birth to our identity. Let this Boishakhs rain wash away all prejudice, hate and sorrow of the previous year, and lead Bangladesh to the new sun rise.
