Sunbeams observes May Day

EVERY year the arrival of the month of May brings with it the remembrance of the historic struggles of workers who wanted to realize their demands for eight hours of work per day and other fundamental rights. Those struggles had lead to the declaration that the first of May will be recognized as International Worker's Day also known as Labour Day. On the occasion of Labour Day, the class VIII and IX students of Sunbeams, with the help of the Economics faculty had put together a short program in the school auditorium to commemorate the significance of May Day.

The presentation included video footages of the present working conditions in Bangladesh, the agitation of the workers and of how May Day is celebrated in Bangladesh and other countries of the world. Topics such as women and child labour, and how the present working conditions in Bangladesh could be improved, were discussed emphatically along with a comparison between working conditions in Bangladesh and a developed country like Sweden.

The highlight of the program was a projection of an interview with renowned industrialist Mr Syed Nasim Manzoor, Managing Director of Apex Adelchi. A team of four students had met up with Mr Manzoor for an exclusive interview on the eve of May Day and the experience can be described as nothing short of enriching. Apart from the experience gained from the interview, the students learnt a lot about the country's economy, management and labour relationship.

The event was both entertaining and enlightening, and the students left the auditorium with heightened awareness about May Day and the rights of workers.
