Orientation program at UIU

UIU held a two-daylong orientation program on June 4th and 6th, 2009 with newly admitted students of Summer 2009 trimester at the Auditorium of the university campus situated at Dhanmondi. About five hundred students from the School of Business and School of Science and Engineering participated in the colorful Orientation Program.

UIU Vice Chancellor Prof M. Rezwan Khan presided over the program, while member of UIU Board of Governors Mr. k. M. Ahsan Shamim was present as the chief guest.

Among others Pro-Vice Chancellor of UIU Prof Chowdhury Mofizur Rahman, Advisor Dr. Golam Rahman, Registrar A.S.M. Salahuddin, Dean-School of Business Prof Habibur Rahman, Prof Mohammad Musa, Prof. A. K Enamul Haque, Prof Hasnan Ahmad, Prof. Sadiqul Islam, Director of Student Affairs-Suman Ahmmed, Heads of different departments, teachers, guardians, students and the invited guests were present in the program.

The speakers said at the orientation program that providing quality education is the prime concern of this university. UIU believes in friendly but respectful relationship between the teachers and the students to keep a congenial educational atmosphere and imparting education in an interesting and enjoyable way. Highly educated and experienced teachers, modern infrastructural facilities and improved equipments are preconditions for quality education, which are available at UIU

The speakers added that Bangladesh is a country of immense potentiality. Thus, the aim of education should be building a knowledge-based society apart from turning the huge population into human resources and UIU has been playing a significant role in this regard.


BAU teacher Kazi Rafiqul Islam honoured

EMINENT educationist Dr. Kazi Rafiqul Islam, the Assistant Professor of Pharmacology Department, Faculty of Veterinary Science of the Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh has been honoured with the ‘Best Scientist Award-2009’ by the International Aldosterone Forum in Japan and Pfizer Company for his outstanding research contribution in the filed of Nephrology research.

Dr. Rafiqul Islam and his wife Dr. Shamsad Jahan Sherajee are now carrying out a research leading to PhD degree in the Department of Pharmacology, Kagawa Medical University, Japan under the supervision of eminent Professor Dr. Akira Nishiyama.

Dr.Kazi Rafiq has also been honored with the ‘Best Scientific paper Award-2008’ in the International Symposium organized jointly by Kagawa University-Japan and Chiang Mai University-Thailand.

It may be mentioned here that he got “Chancellor Gold Medal” for his outstanding result in MS in pharmacology degree during 1999 from BAU.


Three Day Long Carnival at Naval Architecture, BUET

THE department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, BUET is going to observe a three day long carnival on 16 to 18 June. The festival will feature a seminar, colorful procession, sports and cultural program, reunion and concert. Distinguished delegates and officials from pioneering shipbuilding companies have been invited to the program. Pictorial embellishment and colorful decoration would be added to the festive mood of the days. The program is anticipated to be celebrated through unbridled exuberance of the students and teachers of the department and active participation of the delegates and corporate.


Certificate Awards Ceremony at BiMS

IN a recent certificate awards ceremony organized by Bangladesh Institute of Management Studies (BiMS) HND graduates of Spring semester, 2009 twenty one graduates received certificates along with nine exceptional students who received crests for their outstanding performance. The event was held at the Xindian restaurant.

The programme began with the opening speech of Samiur Rashid, Executive Chairman of BiMS University College. Other distinguished guests included Mirja Taher, Country Manager, ABP, UK & Chief Advisor: BiMS University College, Brig. Gen. Enayet Hussain, PSC (Rtd.) - Chairman BiMS University College, Saidur Rahman - Country Manager, Bangladesh, Shahin Reza, Regional Operations Manager, Edexcel, Bangladesh


Orientation and Cultural Program held at Southern University

THE orientation program for the newly admitted students of Undergraduate and Graduate programs in the Dept. of CSIT, ECE and EEE, Southern University, Bangladesh was held recently at the university auditorium. The whole program was divided into two sessions: Orientation program and Cultural program.

VC Prof. A.J.M. Nuruddin Chowdhury, Pro-VC Prof. Dr. Sharifuzzaman, founder as well as the Treasurer Mr. Sarwar Jahan, all faculty deans, departmental heads were present at this program. All teachers, officers and students of the university were also present. The freshers were welcomed to the university at the beginning of the program and were informed about the rules and regulations of the university in the first session of the program. The core session of the orientation program was followed by a cultural program, presented by the students of the faculty of Science and Engineering that included drama, fashion show, special bulletin, jokes, band show, etc.


T20 cricket tournament held at CU

PUBLIC Administration Premier League (PPL) T20 cricket tournament was recently held in Sir AF Rahaman hall playground. The event was organized for the first time by the department of public administration, University of Chittagong. The grand final of the tournament was held on 2nd June. The contestants were Gladiator's Dream (27th batch) and Banglar Lathial (28th batch). In the final match, Gladiator's Dream beat Banglar Lathial by 39 runs. All rounder Faisal Ahmed of Gladiator's Dream was selected as the man of the match and Suman, captain of the same team was selected for the man of the series award. Dr SM Quddus, chairman of the Public Administration department was present as chief guest of the final match. He handed over the champion's trophy. Mr. Jubaer Ibna Taher, Chief organizer of the tournament was also present in the prize giving ceremony.


National dissemination seminar at Brac Inn

'STANDARD Operating Procedures for Services to People Living with HIV and AIDS' was launched on the 3rd June 2009 in a national dissemination seminar held at BRAC Inn. Honorable Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Shaikh Altaf Ali unveiled the national document as the Chief Guest while Dr. Md. Ishaque Khan, Line Director of National AIDS/STD Program and Safe Blood Transfusion Program; and Dr. Nizam Uddin Ahmed, Director-HIV/AIDS Sector and South Asia Program Advisor of Save the Children-USA were present as Special Guests. Prof. Dr. Hosne Ara Tahmin, Additional Director General, Directorate General of Health Services chaired the seminar. Country Director of Population Council Dr. Ubaidur Rob conveyed his thanks to guests and participants. Population Council, James P. Grant School of Public Health, BRAC University, National AIDS/STD Program and Save the Children-USA jointly organized the event. This was a part of Global Fund Round 6 activities. Ismat Bhuiya, Team Leader of James P Grant School of Public Health Consortium and Senior Program Officer of Population Council made a key presentation on Standard Operating procedures. Associate Dean and Director of James P Grant School of Public Health Dr. Anwar Islam were also present in the seminar.

Chief Guest said in his speech that we have to give emphasis on institutional capacity building to play the effective role in preventing HIV/AIDS in our country. He also mentioned that this is the high time to develop strategic and long-term plan through GO-NGO collaboration and design program to sustain it. We have to sustain our program at any cost otherwise our all initiatives will be in vain. We have plenty of support in this sector at present time and it will continue for several years in future. Standard Operating Procedures will help us in case of sustainability of the PLHA related program by providing proper direction. We have to develop PLHA as resource in case of preventing HIV/AIDS rather than considering them as burden.

 


NSU commences classes at the new campus

NORTH South University (NSU) celebrated the starting of classes at the new campus in Bashundhara on Tuesday, 9 June 2009. The event was marked with a cake- cutting ceremony for the students amidst fun and excitement. NSU Foundation Chairman M.A. Awal said greeted the students on their fresh new journey in the campus. The Vice Chancellor Dr. Hafiz G.A.Siddiqi welcomed the students and emphasised the significance of the historic occasion. Iftekharul Alam, the Founder Chairman of the Board of Governors was also present to share his feelings with the students and colleagues.


Orientation Ceremony at IUBAT

THE 51st Orientation ceremony of summer 2009 for freshmen of International University of Business Agriculture and Technology (IUBAT) heralded new promise of dedication and endurance to achieve greater goals in life by acquiring advanced knowledge facilitating socio-economic growth and development.

Prof. M Alimullah Miyan, Vice-Chancellor of IUBAT Chairing the occasion welcomed all present in the orientation ceremony. Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Mahmuda Khanom, Chairs and Coordinators of different programs, Faculty members including International faculties, Alumni and students attended the event.

Prof Alex Berland of University of British Columbia and Adviser to the College of Health Science and Medical Education adorned as the Chief Guest spoke elegantly encouraging the new students for growing steadily with universal values to become successful leaders of coming days. He advised them to work hard to acquire advanced knowledge necessary to cope with existing global challenges.


Recently, the Awards Ceremony of the London School of Commerce(LSC) was held in the city.
