Graduation Blues

Zannatul Lamea

"RADUATION” is the trigger point of student life, which is not exactly as mesmerizing as it appears in the early years of our school life. Trust me it is scary! Let me explain how.

All the years of schooling we have a common objective that directs our academic life. The courses we study in school, college and finally university work as stair steps lifting us up towards the final destination of our life. During all these prolonged years, we the students have something to look forward to a saturated point, where we are waiting eagerly to reach our goal. But in order to reach the point, most of us (well apart from the computer geniuses) freak out!

Most students get extremely confused and anxious about their future, which is commonly termed as “Graduation Blues” by psychologists. Cases sometimes become very serious in case of average students. As a result, they suffer from a severe inferior complexity that leads them to be haunted by the question, “What is wrong with me?” Well the situation is very common since there are millions of such students who are bothered by the same question as well. Don't make yourself feel worse wondering. The beginning and endings are always a little scary and full of stress.

“I had been waited for my graduation for long 17 academic years, and now that I am a graduate. It feels like a kind of vacant and hollow inside me. Well of course the difference is that I am not being questioned for each of my action and I have a whole new aura of independence encircling me. But trust me, the responsibility that comes with it takes away nearly all its charm. I get to take my own decisions- Yes, but I also have to take the full responsibility for each with utmost care. And that is very pressurizing sometimes. Independence is half as thrilling as it seems” - says a fresh graduate, Ridoy Podder, student of Electrical Engineer, University Of Birmingham

Most students are found to be worried about their future during the graduation year and thus they end up in a complete fiasco. The food for thought here is that, the more you waste your time being worried, the more loose your potential working ability. Identify your potentials and outline your drive. Explore what you want to be and find out the hidden scopes. The most difficult part is choosing what you want to be, selecting the corporate arena that best satisfies your inherent dreams. And once you are decided, all you need to do is to seek proper routes towards your desired goal. If you are totally clueless about which path to choose, and suffering from constant dilemma, then consider seeking career counseling from your prospective faculties or with other graduates who have already settled their career successfully.

It is seen that the fresh graduates are often find themselves in dilemma when they try to balance their carefree student lifestyle, and busy working lifestyle in the beginning of their career life. In this circumstance, adds Rafiul Alam, Grad in Marketing and HR, now working at E.Gen consultancy: “Actually my new career life is a new combo mix for me. It has a flavor of independence that I enjoy solely, coupled with the load of responsibility. Unlike my peers, I enjoy the responsibilities because it makes me feel more mature, more dependable. Although career life is a vicious cycle for unending years, but one can enjoy it in one's own way or sulk about it all along. It all depends how you look at it.”

Although graduation blues are a very common effect, it is you who will chose whether you want to combat it or simply become a victim. An effective suggestion is that, boost yourself up and don't compare yourself on a generic scale in accordance with your peers. Remember talent sparks from the non-generic. All you need is to have a good grip on yourself and tune accordingly. Who knows, you could be on the cover of Forbes magazine in the next ten years. Best of luck!
