IUB's seminar on 'The 2008 US Financial Meltdown: Causes and Stages'

A seminar was held at Independent University Bangladesh (IUB) on 'The 2008 US Financial Meltdown: Causes and Stages' on 15 June at Bashundhara Campus. The seminar began with speeches from both Vice Chancellor Bazlul Mobin Chowdhury and Pro Vice Chancellor Prof. Omar Rahman who welcomed chief guest Dr Belal E Baaquie, a professor in the Department of Physics of National University of Singapore.

Dr Belal E Baaquie presented his paper on 'The 2008 US Financial Meltdown Causes and Stages'. He talked about the US mortgage market, global financial losses, and different acts and reasons describing the main causes of the US financial meltdown. He gave detail analysis on how Bangladesh being a third world country was affected by this meltdown. He highlighted how other countries like China will eclipse US and has invested over $800 billion to develop its domestic economy protecting itself from the meltdown. Later, Dr. Baaquie concluded by describing the future challenges on how the global financial system can be protected.

The seminar ended with a question and answer session between Dr Baaquie, the guests, IUB students and faculty members.


Blood donation programme at SEU

STUDENTS of the Department of BBA of Southeast University (SEU) organized a voluntary blood donation programme at the seminar hall on June 14. Some 60 teachers and students of the department donated their blood to the Thalassaemia hospital so that the poor people suffering from the deadly diseases get blood for free. The programme started at 10am and continued till 4pm. It may be mentioned here that the students of SEU organize such blood donation programmes regularly and donate blood to different hospitals. The students consider such voluntary blood donation as part of their social responsibility to serve the distressed. It has been witnessed that the number of voluntary donors are being increasing with time.


Inter Faculty Debate Championship in BUET

THE 6th Inter Faculty Debate Championship was held in BUET from 11 to 13 June. BUET Debating Club organised this event while all five faculties of BUET Faculty of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Architecture and planning and Faculty of Engineering took part in the competition.

After initial screening in the faculty 12 teams in Bengali group and 8 teams in English group were selected to compete in the final round. Faculty of Mechanical Engineering became the champion in English Parliamentary debate. In Bengali group Faculty of Electrical Engineering became the champion.

Concluding and prize giving ceremony was presided over by the Director of Directorate of Student Welfare (DSW) Dr. Maglub al Nur with the honorable Vice Chancelor Professor A.M.M. Safiullah as the chief guest. Deputy Director of DSW professor Dr. Mehedi Hasan Ansari and representatives from faculties were also present.


Stamford Team Excels at BUET Exhibition

CIVIL Engineering Department of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) organised Civil Engineering Software Exhibition at BUET auditorium recently. The team members of Stamford University Bangladesh who stood first at the exhibition consisted of Md. Ahsraful Huq, Mohammad Sahed Ullah and Md. Rakibul Islam. The Stamford Team submitted 'Edge supported RCC slab design by web application' project which was coordinated by Department teacher Subroto Chowdhury.

Students from Ahsanullah Science and Technology University, MIST and many other top engineering universities participated in the exhibition. Stamford University took the crown and won crest and BTD 5000 prize money.

Prof. D. M M Shafe Uddin, Vice Chancellor of BUET was present at the closing ceremony as the Chief Guest. Team management and overall coordination of the exhibition was conducted by department teacher Mahbubur Rahman and Mohiuddin Ahmed. Winning team member Md. Ahsraful Huq expressed his hope that in near future Stamford Civil Engineering Department will be the top Civil Engineering Department in the country.


'World Blood Donor Day' in Gonoshasthya Shamaj Vittik Medical College

GONOSHASTHYA Shamaj Vittik Medical College organised a blood donation programme marking the World Blood Donor Day on June 14 in Savar. Students from medical and other departments participated in the life saving programme.

Member of Parliament, Rashed Khan Menon, Mr. Mejba and Md. Delwar Hossain were present at the event. Dr. Shahzada Choudhury inaugurated the programme and vice-principal Dr. Laila Parvin Begum coordinated it.


Debating Workshop at NUB

A daylong workshop titled 'International Debating Workshop-2009' was held in the business campus auditorium of Northern University Bangladesh (NUB) on June 20.

Acting Vice-Chancellor of NUB, Professor AWM Abdul Haque inaugurated the program as the chief guest in the morning.The student in-charge of development divison of International Islamic University Malyasia (IIUM), Mr. MD. Abdul Latif was the key Instructor to the participating students. Dean of Business faculty Prof. MA Razzak and Head of English Department Prof. Sher Mohammad were the special guests in the opening ceremony.

Mr. Latif, also the Head of Debate Division of IIUM, took the daylong different sessions describing the tools, techniques and methods of being a successful debater. A total of 50 students from different departments of NUB participated in the workshop. Later, certificates were distributed among the students.


NAME Festival at BUET

THE two day long Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering festival was celebrated on 17 and 18 June. Teachers and students of the dept. and many pioneering shipbuilders, distinguished delegates actively participated in the program.

The festival featured seminars, talk shows, cultural programs, a colorful procession, T-shirt distribution, feast and reunion. The program was inaugurated by the Vice-Chancellor of BUET, Dr. A. F. Shafiullah on 17 June. After the inauguration ceremony, professors Shafiullah, Khabirul Haque Chowdhury (Head of Dept. of NAME) and Maglub Al Nur (Directorate of Students Welfare) gave short speeches focusing on the future of the flourishing sector of Naval Architecture in Bangladesh.
