Seminar on Bangladesh Population Projection at NSU

UNDER the auspices of North South University (NSU), American Alumni Association (AAA) and Organization for Population and Poverty Alleviation (OPPA) organised a seminar on “Bangladesh Population Projections for 100 years (2001-2101)” at the NSU Main Campus on 28 June 2009. Dr. Syed Modasser Ali, Advisor to the Prime Minister, attended as the chief guest and Dr. Arthur Erken, UNFPA Representative was the guest of honor, while M.A. Kashem, Chairman of NSU Foundation, Dr. Hafiz G.A. Siddiqi, Vice Chancellor, NSUF Vice Chairman Benazir Ahmed and member Dr. Roushan Alam, Abdul Qayum, DG Family Planning attended the event as special guests. The keynote speaker of the seminar was Professor M. A. Mabud, Dept. of Public Health NSU and President OPPA. The Seminar was Chaired by Pro Vice Chancellor Dr. SAM Khairul Bashar. The keynote presentation by Professor Mabud gave detailed break-ups of population increase based on statistical data that indicates equalization of birth and death by the year 2101 and the population presumably to reach 232-242 million in 2075-78.

 

1st-Ever Interactive University Web Portal ULAB 2.0 Launched in Bangladesh

THE University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) launched the first-ever interactive web portal of any university in Bangladesh on Thursday, 9 July 2009. The fully-dynamic university information system was launched by the Honourable Minister for Education, Nurul Islam Nahid, who graced the ceremony as the Chief Guest. The theme of the day was "ULAB 2.0: Embracing Digital Bangladesh."

This new interactive concept in university websites emphasizes the collaboration between teachers and students. Teachers and students will be able to network, share files, comment on each other's work, and work together in their study activities. This web portal empowers students and faculties and makes possible their use of online learning. In this way ULAB is embracing the true meaning of "Digital Bangladesh" in Education.

Nurul Islam Nahid in his speech thanked ULAB for this great initiative where the students and the teachers will get the chance to interact through the web. He said that “in this era of information technology people of Bangladesh wants change and the government is working on it. To establish a DIGITAL BANGLADESH within 2021 this initiative will help a lot and other Universities can take this initiative as an example. So I personally thank ULAB for this.”

The Special Guest was Mr. Kazi Islam, the CEO of Grameen Solutions, who developed the site in partnership with ULAB's web development team.

 

Seminar on Peace and value education held in Rajshahi

‘ASHRAI’ and ‘Campaign for Popular Education (Gonosakharata Ovijan)’ - two non government organisations jointly organized a seminar titled “Peace and value education: Our realization (Santi O Mullobodh Sikkha: Amader Vabna)” at the Rajshahi Chambers of Commerce auditorium on 29 June. Member to the former caretaker government and Executive Director of ‘Campaign for Popular Education (Gonosakharata Ovijan )’ Rasheda K Chowdhury was present at the programme as the chief guest. Former Vice Chancellor of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam University, Mymensingh Prof. Shamsur Rahman presented a keynote paper on the topic of discussion. Chairman of Rajshahi secondary and Higher secondary education Board Prof. Deepkendra Nath Das was present at the event as the special guest. Professor Shofi Ahmed, Jahangirnagar University English Department, and Deputy Director of Rajshahi Higher Secondary Teachers Training Institute Dr. Sultana Nazneen also spoke at the seminar. The programme was presided over by Prof. Shamsul Alam Birprotik, Rajshahi University Geography Department. Manager of “Campaign for Popular Education (Gonosakharata Ovijan ) and Deputy Director of ASHRAI MA Salam also spoke on the occasion. Speakers urged the government to include peace and value education in the national secondary and higher secondary text books to implement a peace based society.

 

Workshop on Effective Interview Skills

A workshop on ‘Effective Interview Skills’, organised by Bangladesh Math Olympiad-an initiative of Prothom-Alo and Dutch Bangla Bank and facilitated by Future Leaders, was held on June 25 at the office of the Bangladesh Open Source Network . Bangladesh Society For Human Resources Management (BSHRM) Vice President A.K. Raihan - General Manager, HR & Admin, Marie Stopes Clinic Society volunteered his expertise and time at this lively and learning workshop. He was present at the workshop as Chief Guest while Daniel Mamun, Assistant Manager, Learning and Development, City Bank was present as the guest speaker. CEO of FutureLeaders Quazi M. Ahmed moderated the event. Munir Hasan, the man behind the idea of Math Olympiad also spoke on the occasion.

About 30 students pursuing bachelors or masters degree in various subjects at different public and private universities and colleges attended this useful workshop which included a mock interview, analysis of the mock interview and a Q & A session.

 

IUB organizes International Workshop on Information Literacy

INDEPENDENT University Bangladesh (IUB) organised an international workshop on “Information Literacy” in the month of June at the School of Business at the IUB Baridhara Campus .The workshop was sponsored by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institution (IFLA). Professor GE Gorman and Dr Daniel, senior lecturer, from Victoria University of Wellington, were in charge of resources at the workshop. The objective of the workshop was to equip librarians with information on how they can compete with the new age of technology. The workshop provided training on IL and building capacity by the library professionals so that the librarians can make themselves qualified to teach its users information literacy skills so as to enable them as lifelong learners and critical thinkers. Professor Nazrul Islam, Director, SLASS, IUB and Chairman, IWIL Advisory; M. Al Mamun, Secretary-Asia Pacific Region, IFLA; Dr. M. Anwer, Director, School of Engineering And Computer Science, IUB; Professor M Omar Rahman Pro Vice Chancellor, IUB; Professor Bazlul Mobin Chowdhury, Vice Chancellor, IUB, and Towhid Samad, Chairman, Governing Council, IUB, addressed the audience and shared their views towards this “new workshop”. The introductory speech was given by Professor Gary Gorman, and the seminar ended with a vote of thanks by M Hossam Haider Chowdhury, Librarian of IUB.
