Inter College Debate Competition in Dinajpur

THE concluding ceremony of the 1st Inter College Debate Competition organised jointly by BRAC and Dinapur Lekhak Forum was held recently at Dinapur Nattya Samity auditorium. The theme of the debate competition was "Finding ways of empowering women in the society". Dinajpur Commercial College emerged as the champions of the tournament defeating Parbatipur Rajabashar Degree College in the final round. Professor Md Ruhul Amin, former Vice Chancellor of Hajee Danesh Science and Technology University, was present as chief guest at the prize giving ceremony while Chitta Ghosh, President of Dinajpur Press Club, presided over the event. Hosney Ara Haidar, Principal of Dinajpur Government College, and Md. Mofazzal Hossain Dulal, Chairman of Dinajpur Sadar Upazila, and other BRAC high officials were present as special guests of the programme. At least 17 colleges from different upazilas of the district participated in the weeklong debate competition.

 

Public University Teachers Training at BAU

THE Graduate Training Institute(GTI) of the Bangladesh Agricultural University(BAU) organized the certificate awarding ceremony of a two month long 'Foundation Training course for University Teachers'at the GTI Conference Hall on 4 July. Speakers at the ceremony stressed the need for professional and academic development of the University teachers to impart education to the students in order to promote the success of all learners in the classroom. Presided over by GTI Director Professor M. Nazrul Islam, the event was attended by Member of the University Grants Commission Professor Md. Tazul Islam as chief guest while Vice-Chancellor Professor M. A. Sattar Mandal was the present as chief patron. Dean of the Faculty of Animal Husbandry Professor Md. Ali Akbar, Treasurer Md. Idris Ali, Course-coordinator Professor M. Mozahar Ali, Dr. Md. Shahidur Rahman and Rukshana Parveen addressed the occasion among others. Besides Bangladesh Agricultural University, teachers from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Sylhet Agricultural University, and Noakhali Science and Technology University took part in the fifth batch of Foundation Training Course for University Teachers. Later, the chief guest Dr. Tazul Islam formally distributed certificates and crests among the teachers of the public universities who took part in the training course. The function was conducted by GTI Assistant Professor Masuma Habib

 

Freshers' Reception at ASA University

FRESHERS' reception for the Summer-2009 undergraduate students of ASA University, Bangladesh (ASAUB) was held at the ASA University auditorium. Prof Md Muinuddin Khan, Vice-Chancellor, ASAUB presided over the ceremony. Md Shafiqual Haque Choudhury, President ASA and Chairman, Board of Governors, ASAUB was present as the chief guest. Prof Tareq MR Chowdhury, Dean, Faculty of Arts, Social Science and Law, Prof Abdul Awal Khan, Dean, Faculty of Business, and Prof Md Saiful Islam, Registrar, ASAUB spoke on the occasion. Chairman of all departments, faculty members, administrative officers of ASAUB and a good number of students were present on the occasion.

 

Stamford University Business Dept Awarded

THE Business School, Stamford University Bangladesh has been selected as one of the 1000 best business schools listed over 153 countries in the first edition of the EDUNIVERSAL world convention, held in Paris in 2008. Recognizing the Stamford Business School as one of the 1000 best business schools, EDUNIVERSAL has awarded the `Certificate of Palmes' to the department.

 

BELTA-AIUB-THT International Seminar

AMERICAN International University-Bangladesh is going to host a three day seminar from July 23 to 25 in association with the Bangladesh English Language Teachers Association (BELTA) titled 'BELTA-AIUB-THT International Seminar 2009'. The seminar will be conducted by 9 foreign resource persons who belong to Teachers Helping Teachers (THT), a Special Interest Group of Japan Association of Language Teachers (JALT). The theme of the seminar this year is 'Alternative Methodologies in ELT'.

Around 50 practicing English Language teachers from different universities, colleges and schools will receive intensive training on English language teaching. The volunteer team led by Dr. Patrick Dougherty will all together have 30 workshops, demonstrations, lectures and a round table discussion.

The inaugural session will take place on 23rd in AIUB auditorium with Professor Nazrul Islam, Chairman of the University Grants Commission, as the Chief Guest.

 

EWU Inter-University Math Olympiad 2009

EAST West University (EWU) Science Club organized Inter University Math Olympiad-2009 for the second time consecutively on 4 July. Bangladesh University of Engineering and technology (BUET) took the top three positions. Some 80 participants from 16 public and private universities took part in the competitions.

Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin, founding Vice Chancellor and President, Board of Directors of the university inaugurated the event. Jalaluddin Ahmed, President, Board of Directors, East West University was present as the chief guest in the prize giving ceremony. He said that mathematics is an exercise of the brain, which helps to think rationally and it is an important means of learning and doing well in all disciplines. He also hoped EWU would organise an International Math Olympiad very soon. Prof. Mohammed Sharif, Vice Chancellor, East West University presided over the prize giving ceremony.

Professor Md. Zafar Iqbal of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology was also present as the convener of the panel of the judges in the competition. Professor Mohammed Kaykobad, Dr. Abu Saleh Abdul Noor, Dr. Mozammel Huq Azad Khan, Dr. Anisul Haque were also present as member of the judges panel.

 

Seminar at NSU

NORTH South University (NSU) in Association with MANAS, organized a Seminar titled "Do Drugs Control Your Life?" on June 26, 2009. The event was held at the main campus of NSU (Bashundhara R/A, Baridhara). Barrister Shafique Ahmed, Minister, Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs was present as Chief Guest of the occasion. Chairman of NSU Foundation, NSU Vice Chancellor Dr. Hafiz G.A. Siddiqi and Mr. Saiful Bari, Advisor of ATN Bangla were present as Special Guests. NSU Pro Vice Chancellor Dr. SAM Khairul Bashar was the Chair of the session. Professor Dr. Arup Ratan Chowdhury, Founder President of MANAS and Member of National Drug Control Board, presented a keynote paper. Dr. G. U Ahsan, Chairman, Department of Public Health, NSU and Faculty Advisor of 'Earth Club' and Ishrat Jabeen also spoke on the occasion.
