GIS and RS Training at BAU

BANGLADESH Agricultural University organised the concluding ceremony of a four-day training on 'Resource Management through Geographical Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS)' on the university campus on 25 July. Vice-Chancellor Professor M.A. Sattar Mandal was the chief guest of the event. Held at the AID Conference room of the BAU Central Library, the function was chaired by Professor Dr. M. Mamunur Rashid, Head, Department of Aquaculture. The event was attended by Professor Dr. Md. Sultanuddin Bhuiya, Coordinator, Committee for Advanced Studies and Research (CASR) as the special guest.

The convener Dr. M. A. Salam explained the aims and objectives of the training course. Md. Golam Mahboob, Resource Person and Scientific Officer, Training and Communication Wing, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Gazipur delivered lectures on RS Training. Dr. M.A. Awal, Md. Touhidul Islam and other trainees spoke on the occasion. Later, Vice-Chancellor Dr. Sattar Mandal distributed certificates among the trainees. He stressed the need for digitalisation of various information and records in order to arrive at suitable decisions in maintaining productive capabilities of agro-ecosystems. Dr. Fatema Haque Shikha conducted the function.

 

Robotics Workshop Held at AIUB

A three-day workshop in the field of “Robotics, Intelligence & Unmanned Systems” was held on 17 July at AIUB with collaboration of Nextsapiens, a leading Indian artificial intelligence research group and its Bangladeshi partner, Spellbound. Professor Dr. Tafazzal Hossain, Vice President, Academics, AIUB inaugurated the workshop. 115 students and faculties of different universities attended the workshop. The students got first-hand knowledge about basic and advance electronics, motors and locomotion of robots, sensor technologies, control systems and application of robots in the terrestrial, aerial and underwater industries and worked on practical applications. Nextsapiens distributed their learning kits in this workshop. The workshop was divided in two parts: Theory and Practical. The first day was all about the basics of robotics, current developments, kit distribution and burning the Microcontrollers. The rest two days were of building the GSM-controlled robots that can detect obstacles.

Anuj and Kumar were the two Indian course-conductors of the workshop. From AIUB, the event was coordinated by Md. Farhad Ahmed of the Department of Computer Science, Jumanah Shireen and Rinku Basak of Faculty of Engineering.

 


‘Future of Bangladeshi Film Industry’ at ULAB


The Media Studies and Journalism (MSJ) Department of the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) held a Roundtable Discussion entitled “Bangladeshi Films: The Way Forward” on July 23, 2009 at the ULAB Auditorium. Panelists at the Roundtable Discussion included Bangladesh Film Archive Director General Dr. Mohammad Jahangir Hossain; Veteran Filmmaker Kazi Morshed; Student Academy Award (Oscar) Winner Maksud Hossain; Digital Filmmaker Razibul Hossain; and ULAB Film Assistant Professor Juditha Ohlmacher. The objective of the activity was to assess the current status of the Bangladeshi film industry and to provide directions as to its future. The discussants said that sex, violence and too much commercialisation in Bangladeshi films are the main reasons of its lack of acceptance among the viewers. They also focused on the lack of necessary facilities in local theaters. The discussants expressed the opinion that the Sensor Board has much more to do regarding the improvement of the current status of Bangladeshi cinema. Among others, ULAB Pro-VC Professor Imran Rahman, Registrar Khaled Khan, Professor Abdul Mannan, Professor Jude Genilo, Senior faculties and students were present at the discussion. After the discussion a two-day long Digital Film Festival was inaugurated at ULAB.

 

Monsoon Celebration at State University of Bangladesh

TO mark the advent of monsoon, a cultural programme was organised by the Department of English Studies at State University of Bangladesh (SUB) on July 26. Students of the university took part in the programme that included songs, dance and poetry recitation. Eminent cultural personality Mita Huq was present as a special guest and she rendered some gems of Tagore songs.

Professor Iftekhar Ghani Chowdhury, Vice-chancellor of SUB along with Registrar Prof. AYM Ekram-Ud-Daulah and other members of the university graced the programme. The scintillating musical journey ended with vote of thanks given by Professor Shafi Ahmed, advisor of the department of English Studies of SUB.

 

Tree Plantation Programme at Comilla University

Dhumketu - a cultural organization - initiated a tree plantation programme at Comilla University from 8 July. The Vice Chancellor of the University Prof. AHM Zehadul Karim inaugurated the event by planting a Krishnochura plant. The Treasurer, Proctor, faculties of several departments and students of the University were present at the occasion.
