Md. Kamruzzaman Bhuiyan

COMILLA University is the new beacon in the horizon of education in Comilla. It was a long cherished dream of the people to have a public university in Comilla. The dream came true after forty-four years when Comilla University started its formal journey on 7 February 2006. Comilla University act was passed by the President on 28 May of that year and the first batch orientation programme was held a year later on the same day.

The university began with 7 departments and 300 students. At present, there are 8 departments with about 1100 students. The departments are Management, Marketing, Accounting, English, Economics, Public Administration, Computer Science and Mathematics. There are 3 residential halls - two for males and one for the female students. The university has a large library comprising 3500 academic books, 16 dailies, 50 journals and 4 international magazines. The authorities also have plans to make the library a digital one in the future.

The university offers transport facilities as well, which is run with the university fund. At present, four buses are operated for the students and one for the teachers and officials. More buses are to be added to the fleet in the future.

Comilla University students have the opportunity to participate in different co-curricular activities. Bangladesh National Cadet Core (BNCC) has already commenced its activities on the University premises. Students regularly participate in debates, drama and many other activities. The university is currently the home of four clubs including the English Language Club. The University authorities recently took decisions to buy 35 computers and provide internet facilities for the students.

Comilla University has plans to start several new departments and build more academic buildings, halls, a central library, an auditorium and a central computer lab. Several initiatives have been taken in this regard. According to Vice Chancellor Prof. AHM Zehadul Karim, Comilla University aims to become a globally renowned and recognized education establishment.
