EWU Inter-University Math Olympiad

EAST West University Science Club has organised the Inter University Math Olympiad-2009 at its campus recently. Some 80 participants from 16 public and private universities took part in the competitions. Bangladesh University of Engineering and technology (BUET) bagged the top three positions in the tournament. Vice Chancellor Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin inaugurated the event. Jalaluddin Ahmed, President, Board of Directors, East West University was present as the chief guest in the prize giving ceremony. Prof. Mohammed Sharif, Vice Chancellor, East West University presided over the prize giving ceremony. Professor Md. Zafar Iqbal of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology was the convener of the panel of the judges in the competition. Professor Mohammed Kaykobad, Dr. Abu Saleh Abdul Noor, Dr. Mozammel Huq Azad Khan and Dr. Anisul Haque were also present as members of the judging panel.

Narrative of Rain at JU

JAHANGIRNAGAR University organized a half day long programme named 'Barshar Kathamala' (Narrative of Rain) on the occasion of the rainy season. Bangla Sangsad, the students' parliament of the Bangla department arranged the programme of different taste on 29 July at the departments' premises. Professor Afsar Ahmed, Dean of Arts and Humanities Faculty inaugurated the event while Chairman of the department, Professor Prithila Naznin Nilima delivered the vote of thanks. At the very beginning of the second session, Fatema-Tuz-Zohra, student of 35th batch read out a article named 'Barshar Ononto Srote' (in the boundless stream of rains) and 'Barshar Kabita' (Poetry of rain) was recited by the prominent poet Professor Khalid Hossen. Later, Shamima Sultana, teacher of the Bangla department along with students of the department Abdur Rahman, Ummesh Dhor, Soumitro Joydip, Farzana Akter, Sadika Rummon, Shaila Akter, Anisur rahman presented various poems and songs. The event was ended with a dance by Tiasha Chakma and Abdur Rauf. Earlier, different books written by the teachers and students of the department were put on display on the premises of the department.

Seminar on Global Warming

A seminar on 'Global Warming: A closer look at climate processes and evidences' was held at the Department of Geography and Environment of Govt. Ananda Mohan College on July 29. Presided over by Prof. Anjumanara Begum, chairman of the department, the seminar was also addressed by Principal of the college Prof. Md. Shafiuddin as chief guest. Vice-Principal of the college Prof. Zahurul Islam and Dr. Gazi Hasan Kamal were the special guests. Prof. Rafique Ahmed of Wisconsin University presented the keynote paper at the seminar. Prof. Afaz Uddin and Md. Anwarul Awal Khan of the department were also present at the event.

The speakers expressed the opinion that global warming is a major problem and its impact can only be minimized through concerted efforts. The level of seawater could rise 88 centimeters by the end of the present century. However, the speakers opined that the consequences on Bangladesh would not be as severe as commonly believed. The speakers also talked about the commercial and environmental viability of solar power as an alternate source of energy.

Patuakhali University Day

THE Patuakhali Science and Technology University (PSTU) Day, commemorating the 9th founding anniversary of the institution, was observed amidst festivity on the campus on July 9, 2009. Dr. Alauddin Ahmed, advisor to the prime minister on education, politics and social development, inaugurated the daylong programmes as chief guest by hoisting national and university flags. To mark the day, hundreds of students, teachers and officials of the university brought out a colourful rally on the campus from the registrar building. Vice Chancellor Prof Syed Shakhawat Hossain led the procession that paraded different streets on the campus. Former students and guardians also came to the campus to take part in the event. The whole campus looked colourful with flowers, festoons and banners all around to mark the founding anniversary. On the occasion, special food was served at the student dormitories. A discussion was also held at the university auditorium participated by lawmaker and religious affairs state minister Md. Shahjahan Mia, AL whip A S M Firoj and AL lawmaker Mahbubur Rahman. PSTU deans of different faculties, chairmen of different departments and hall provosts were also present at the discussion presided over by the VC PSTU.

Fordham University Professor on 40th anniversary of moon landing

DR. Asif Siddiqi, Professor of History at New York's Fordham University, who specializes in the History of Science and Technology, underscored the growing Asian participation in deep space program with significant involvement of Japan, China and India. Martin Savidge interviewed him in the American TV program, World Focus, on the 40th anniversary of Apollo 11 moon landing. Dr. Siddiqi, the author of the ground breaking 'Challenge to Apollo: the Soviet Race to the Moon , 1945-1974”, published by NASA, was a mere toddler when astronaut Neil Armstrong in 1969 set foot on the moon and uttered the famous words, “One small step for man, one giant step for mankind.”

In the interview, Dr. Siddiqi recounted the growth of inter-planetary exploration since the days of US and Soviet Russian dual space programs. The space race has gradually widened to include China, India and Japan. All three countries have sent unmanned probes to the moon. China has sent manned voyages to outer space and plans a manned lunar landing within 15 years. When asked about the next momentous advance in space exploration, Dr. Siddiqi mentioned the landing of American astronauts on Mars that NASA is resolutely working on. To commemorate the pioneering 1969 lunar landing, BBC Bangla Program also interviewed Dr. Asif Siddiqi. The eminent historian of Bangladeshi origin is the only son of Prof. Najma Siddiqi and Dr. Hafiz G.A. Siddiqi, Vice chancellor of North South University.

Workshop at SUB

THE department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Stamford University Bangladesh organized a daylong workshop titled "Impact of Submarine Cable and Mobile Communication in Bangladesh" on 10 April at the Siddeswari Campus. The Technical sessions were divided into two sections. The speaker of Technical Session-I was Engr. Monwar Hossain, Managing Director, Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Ltd. The speaker of Technical Session-II was Engr. S. M. Monirul Haque Murad, Deputy Chief Engineer, Network / Technology. The Workshop was presided by Prof. A.M. Rezaul Karim Talukder, Chairman, EEE department. Prof. Dr. M. Bashiruddin, Convener, Workshop-2009 gave the welcome address. Prof. M. M. A. Sikder, Proctor of the University and Kazi Mostaq Ahmed, Assistant Professor, EEE department also spoke on the occasion. Prof. Dr. M. Majibur Rahman, Honorable Vice-Chancellor of the University was present as Chief Guest. At the end of the Workshop Chairman of the EEE dept, Prof. A.M. Rezaul Karim Talukder distributed certificates among the participants. Finally, crests were awarded to Prof. Dr. M. A. Hannan Feroz, PhD, Honorable President, Ms. Fatinaaz Feroz, Honorable Vice-President, Prof. Dr. M. Majibur Rahman, Honorable Vice-Chancellor and S.M. Ikramul Haque, Honorable Registrar of the University.

Research Project Seminar at JU

A day-long seminar on research project presentation was held on 27th July at Jahangirnagar University. JU VC Prof. Sharif Enamul Kabir inaugurated the seminar organized by Faculty of Arts and humanities. Papers of thirty one research projects, took place in the economic year of 2008-'09 were presented in eight different sessions. At the inaugural session, JU VC Prof Sharif Enamul karim said, the young researchers should come forward to boost the dignity of university. The research papers should not only be published in the university journal but also in the national and international journal. Earlier JU Pro-VC (education) Prof Md. Moniruzzaman, Pro-VC (admin) Prof Md. Farhad Hossen, treasurer Prof Md. Nasir Uddin also spoke as the special guests. Hundreds of teachers and students of eight departments under the faculty of Arts and Humanities took part in the discussion of the day-long seminar presided over by the Dean of the same faculty Prof. Afsar Ahmed.
