Fresher Reception at DIIT

THE orientation ceremony of the fresher students of Batch 48 and 49 at the Daffodil International Institute of Technology (DIIT) was held at its Dhanmondi Campus Auditorium on 2 August. In a pleasurable environment and with the presence of guardians the students were given the reception. Mohammad Nuruzzaman, the Executive Director of DIIT, presided over the programme. The Chief Guest of the event was Professor Aminul Islam, the Vice Chancellor of Daffodil International University. Among others, Dr. Md. Fokray Hossain, the Chairman of CSE Dept. of DIU, Md. Khaled Sohel, Deputy Director of DIIT, Rathindra Nath Das, the Deputy Director of DIIT, Md. Samsuddin Ahmed, Course Coordinator of DIIT were also present at the event. Professor Aminul Islam in his speech remarked on the importance of teacher-student relationship in any educational institution. Mohammad Nuruzzaman, the Executive Director of DIIT in his speech, advised the students to become careful in career related issues and described the importance of International Standard Education.

Seminar on Press Freedom and Journalism Ethics at IUB

On 5 August, the School of Liberal Arts and Social Science of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) organized a seminar on 'Freedom of Press and Ethics of Journalism'. The seminar was mainly organized for the budding journalists from the Media and Communication Department of the university. Marguerite Sullivan was the guest speaker and was accompanied by Harvey Sernovitz, Information Officer, Embassy of USA. Sullivan is currently the Senior Director of the Center for International Media Assistance at the National Endowment for Democracy (USA).

Sullivan talked about three types of press: free press, partially free press and not-free press. Bangladesh falls under the category of not-free press. She discussed the present condition of press in Bangladesh, the function of media as a watchdog and the role of media in economic development. The commercialization of newspapers was also covered. She further discussed the role of journalists and the ways in which they can be more responsible. The role that advertisers play in controlling the media was also covered. The seminar was a very interactive one with many questions and answers. Bazlul Mobin Chowdhury, Vice-Chancellor, Independent University, Bangladesh, and Dr. G.M. Shahidul Alam, Head of Department of Media and Communication, were also present at the occasion.

Cultural week at JU

DEPARTMENT of Economics of Jahangirnagar University organised a weeklong cultural festival including a debate competition and a freshers' reception from 2-6 August. Debating Society of Economics (DSE) organised the inter-batch debate competition on the occasion of cultural week. The team from the Batch 36 won the contest defeating Batch 37 in the final. Aslam Anwar of Batch 34, Farha Naz Ruhi of Batch 37 and Nur-E-Alam of Batch 37 respectively bagged the first, second and third position in the public speaking competition. The festivity ended with a colourful freshers' reception and a cultural function participated by the students of the department. Prominent economist Professor Anu Muhammad and the chairman of the department Professor Anisur Rahman were present at the event.

A Memorable day for the Rotaractors

The first installation ceremony of Rotaract Club of Chittagong Hill town was held recently at The Peninsula Hotel Chittagong. Subrata Bartacharjee, the Assistant High Commissioner of India, was present as chief guest. The installation ceremony featured the 14th Rotaract District Award ceremony “Alongkar”, 26th Rotaract district installation “Uccahash” and 2nd Rotaract District official training program “Ujjidito”. Rotaract club of Chittagong Hilltown was the host of all the three programmes. All the members and board members of Rotaract Club of Chittagong Hilltown were present at the occasion. After the Installation a cultural programme was held.

Rotaract Club is an organization of young men and women between the ages of 18 to 30 whose goals are to develop professional leadership skills to emphasize respect for rights of others, to recognize the dignity of all useful occupation and to recognize ethical standards.

Seminar on English Language Teaching in Sylhet

A two-day international seminar on English language teaching was held in Sylhet on 27-28 July at the Leading University. The seminar was organised by UKBET, the UK-Bangladesh Education Trust (a voluntary organisation working in Sylhet since 1993), in partnership with BELTA Sylhet Chapter, and THT, the Teachers Helping Teachers of Japan. The seminar aimed to provide workshop activities to develop English teaching methodology and the theme was '“Alternative Methodologies in ELT”. UKBET Bangladesh Chairperson Dr. Kabir H. Choudhury inaugurated the event, while UKBET Executive Director and BELTA Sylhet Chapter Convener Hossain Ahmed was the chair. Abu Dhabi Men's College Professor Dr. Patrick Dougherty and Leading University Registrar Shaukatul Hasan Chowdhury attended the inaugural session as special guests.

There were eight interactive workshops on English language teaching and a total of 180 participants from 75 schools, colleges, madrassahs and universities attended the event. The presenters were Dr. Patrick Dougherty, Dr. Cecilia Silva from Tohoku University (Japan), Prof Stephen Wolfe of Ryukoku University, Japan, Cherie Brown of University of Otago (New Zealand), Anne Howard of Miyazaki International College (Japan) and Jill Bruellman of Sumikin-Intercom, Japan. The seminar was able to create debates on English language teaching methodology in the context of Bangladesh. The seminar was concluded with closing remarks from Md. Rezaul Karim of the Leading University and with vote of thanks by Hossain Ahmed.

Symposium on Budget 2009-2010 at Stamford

THE Economics Department of Stamford University Bangladesh arranged a seminar on "Possible Effects of Budget for 2009-10." Prof. A.T.M. Zahurul Huq, Dean of Social Science Department and former chairman of UGC was the chief guest of the seminar. Dr. Azizur Rahman, president of National Academy for Educational Management, also spoke as the special guest. The teachers and the students of the department presented six papers in the seminar. The event was concluded by a question-and-answer session between the speakers and the outgoing students of the department.

Poster Competition at East West University

THE Conversation Club of East West University and the English Literary Club of Daffodil International University jointly organized a poster show competition at the East West University on 10 August 2009. A total of 29 posters prepared by the students belonging to different departments of the two universities were displayed at the EWU auditorium. The posters portrayed many contemporary political, economic, social and cultural issues including child labour, eve teasing, women empowerment, moral degeneration, power saving and climate change. Among others, Professor Dr. Muniruddin Ahmed, Pro Vice-Chancellor of East West University, visited the show. A panel of judges comprising four faculty members from EWU and DIU - Mr. Kamrul Hassan, Ms. Irina Ishrat and Mr. Saiful Hoque, Mr. Golam Rabbani - evaluated the posters. The poster 'They are not disabled but physiologically challenged' by Mahadi Hasan, a student of BBA, DIU, won the first prize. 'Trees protect us from greenhouse effect' a joint work by Sarira Hossain, Mir Md. Nasif Ahmed, Mariam Akter and Farhana Yasmin, students of BBA, EWU, clinched the second prize. The third prize went to 'A Tribute to Michael Jackson' by Md. Imran Mahmud, a student of BBA, EWU. Dr. Binoy Barman, Head of the Department of English, Daffodil International University, handed over certificates among the winners at a prize awarding ceremony late afternoon. Ms. Sonia Sharmin, moderator of Conversation Club, EWU, and Ms. Nahid Kaiser, coordinator of English Literary Club, played key roles in organizing the programme, which was a token of friendship between the two premier private universities of Bangladesh.
