Reception to Deans of Agriculture at BAU
A grand reception was accorded to the eminent agriculturists and outgoing and newly appointed Deans of the faculty of Agriculture Professor Md. Abdul Halim Khan and Professor Md. Abdul Karim at the TSC Conference Hall of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU). Vice-Chancellor Professor M. A. Sattar Mandal was the chief guest, while Professor Nazrul Islam, Head Department of Agronomy presided over the event. Professor M. Burhan Uddin, Professor Md. Ali Akbar, Professor S M Ziaul Karim, Professor Md. Shahjahan, Professor G. M.ujibur Rahman, Professor M. Abul Kashem and other teachers of the University attended the event. Later, the Vice-Chancellor awarded crests to the former and present deans of faculty of Agriculture.
Seminar on Religion and World Peace at DU
THE Department of World Religions and Culture and the Center for Inter-religious and Intercultural Dialogue (CIID) of Dhaka University jointly organized a seminar on the “Role of Religion in Promoting World Peace” on 8 August at the seminar room of the Department. Dr. Riffat Hassan, Professor of Islamic Thought of Louisville University, USA was the keynote speaker. Dr. John McLeod, Professor and Chairman, Department of History of the same University, Dr. Mary Hora, an eminent Attorney of Kentucky Court of Appeals, Dr. Stacy Baily Ndiaye, Director of Muhammad Ali Institute for Peace and Justice of USA, Professor Eva Sadia Saad, Chairperson, Department of World Religions and Culture, Dhaka University and Dr. Kazi Nurul Islam, Professor and Director of Centre for Inter-religious and Inter-cultural Dialogue, Dhaka University took part in the discussion. Professor Aminul Islam of the Department of Philosophy of Dhaka University presided over the seminar. Professor Riffat Hasan asserted that religion can bring peace if it is properly understood. Dr. McLeod explained how religion can bridge divisions and work for bringing about unity in today's' world. Dr. Stacy mentioned that to promote peace, religious leaders must safeguard justice. In his presidential address, Professor Aminul Islam advocated respect for diverse religious beliefs.
Students Medical Services (STUMS) Inaugurated
STUDENT Enabling Project (STEP) is going to introduce an innovative health care service for students titled Students Medical Services (STUMS). Under STUMS, STEP will provide a unique health card to students by which students will be able to avail all medical services at discount prices. STEP authority disclosed this in the recently held inauguration programme of the initiative. Mr. Abdullah M. Taher, CEO of STEP, attended the programme as the chief guest. Besides providing health care services, STUMS will work for building anti-drug awareness. Several workshops, seminars, and rallies will be organized in this regard. The services provided for university students will gradually be extended to the school and college level.
E.U. Faculty of Arts launches Seminar Library
EASTERN University has recently set up a seminar library for the Faculty of Arts and Law. This is in addition to the rich Central Library, which was established at the very outset of the university. Prof. Rahim B. Talukder, the Vice Chancellor Eastern University formally inaugurated it on 12 August. Present among others were Prof. Saiful Majid, Chairman, Eastern University Foundation, Prof. Nurul Islam, the Dean, Faculty of Arts, and Coln. (Rtd). Ali Ambial Haque Khan, the Registrar of the University. The students and the Faculty members were also present at the inauguration ceremony.
Building a Global Career - A Daylong Workshop at DU
THE MBA students of the department of Strategic International Management (SIM) organized a daylong workshop focusing on "Building a Global Career" at the conference hall of business studies faculty of Dhaka University on 16 August. BRB CABLES, NCR TECHNOMEDIA LTD, Prime Bank and Future Group sponsored the workshop. The renowned resource persons who conducted different sessions of the workshop include Rodney Reed, Chairman of Reed Consulting Bangladesh Ltd and Director of Reed Consulting Ltd (UK), Ravi Kamalraj, Human Resource Director of World Vision Bangladesh, Dr Shaheen Afroze, Research Director, Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies and Mr. Muhammad Yeasir, Managing Director of Future Group. Dr. Md. Serajul Islam, Chairman of Management Studies along with Ferdausi Sultana, Associate Professor, Department of Management Studies, Mohammad Thoufiqul Islam, Associate Professor, Department of Management Studies and the resource persons inaugurated the workshop.
Seminar on Solar Energy at IUBAT
THE Centre for Global Environmental Culture (CGEC) of International University of Business Agriculture and Technology (IUBAT) organized a seminar on “Solar Energy for High-Rise Buildings in Urban Areas” at the Conference Hall of the university. The seminar was attended by experts from the environmental arena, academics, resource persons including members of faculty and students of the university. Speakers in their deliberations pointed out the importance of Solar Energy in the urban areas suggesting methods to introduce solar energy immediately to save the country from an economic and humanitarian crisis.
Dr M Ataur Rahman, Director, Education for Sustainability of CGEC pointed out that the utilization of solar energy is the only solution to mitigate present energy crisis. Most of the garments and textile industries are located in the cities and millions of workers have concentrated in the urban areas. Only the textile and garment sectors are incurring losses of about 240 million every year in Dhaka city due to electricity failure. Dr. Rahman emphasized that, since Bangladesh is geographically located in a favored region with enormous sunshine; huge solar energy can be trapped from the sun. Dr. Engineer Khurseed-Ul-Islam, Senior Advisor of GTZ, Guest of Honor described the “Four Fuel” Strategy for Energy Security of Bangladesh. Professor M Alimullah Miyan, Vice Chancellor of IUBAT in his presidential speech emphasized the importance of a Model Solar Energy project for the high rise buildings of urban areas.
Publication Ceremony of the IST Journal
PUBLICATION ceremony of the 1st Issue of the Institute of Science and Technology (IST) Journal on Business and Technology was held on 23 August. The publication ceremony was inaugurated by Honorable Minister of the Ministry of Commerce Lt. Col (retd.) Faruk Khan while presided over by Prof. Dr. Shahida Rafique, Chief Editor of the Journal and Chairman, Board of Governors, IST. Prof. Abbas Ali Khan, Dean, Faculty of Business Studies, University of Dhaka and Prof. Shanaj Haque Hossain, Dean, Faculty of Earth & Environmental Science, University of Dhaka were the guests of honour at the programme. A total of 25 research based articles written by national and international contributors and one book review was published in the journal. Among others Prof. Mahammad Mahboob Ali, Chairman, School of Business and Economics, Atish Dipankar University of Science and Technology, Prof. Dr. Haider Ali, Dept. of Computer Science and Engineering, Nargis Akter, Head, Computer Science and Engineering, IST and Mr. Hadifur Rahman also spoke on theoccasion.
Commerce Minister Lt. Col (retired) Faruk Khan commented that to build a new Bangladesh, continuous effort should be dedicated to research and development. Prof. Dr. Shahida Rafique opined that access to appropriate information is vital for socioeconomic development of a nation.The Editorial Associate of the Journal Md. Moulude Hossain was the presenter of the occasion.
KUET VC Receives International Award
Prof. Dr. Md. Nawsher Ali, the Vice-Chancellor of Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (KUET) has been awarded the Asian Institute of Technology Alumni Association Distinguished Award2008 for his outstanding contribution in the field of professional technology in the SouthEast Asia region.
The Ambassador of Thailand Mr. Chalermpol has recently handed over the crest of the award at the Pink City Building of Gulshan, Dhaka. The President of Bangladesh faction of Asian Institute of Technology Alumni Association (AITAA) Mr. M. H. Bokhari chaired the occasion. The former Bangladesh High Commissioner to Thailand Mr. Shahed Akter, AIT Teachers, members of AITAA and other distinguished guests were present in the programme. Dr. Nawsher Ali was first named for the Award in the annual meeting of AITAA, held at Beijing, China in November, 2008.
The President of the Association Somprasong Boonyachai announced the award in the meeting. Dr. Nawsher Ali's successful research to introduce renewable energy technology in Bangladesh, the southern region in particular, has been acknowledged by this award.
NSUPC organises Photo-festival 2009
THE inaugural ceremony of the three day long Photo-festival 2009 from August 23 to 25, 2009 was held at NSU own campus at Bashundhara on 23 August 2009, organized by North South University Photography Club (NSUPC). Mr. M.A. Kashem, Chairman, NSU Foundation, inaugurated the event as Chief Guest. NSU Vice Chancellor Dr. Hafiz G.A. Siddiqi was present as special guest while Pro VC Dr. SAM Khairul Bashar was present as guest of honour. NSUPC president Wajda Akhtar, faculty members, viewers, students and senior officialswere also present among others. 110 photographs have been selected for exhibition. The photographs are on nature, landscape, architecture, action, still life, portrait, and life style.
Orientation at Pearl Fashion Institute
THE Pearl Fashion Institute organized an orientation programme on 16 August. The event started with the Executive Director's welcome address followed by an introduction to the Group and the Institute. Curriculums, students' hand books, module specs, contextuals and TLA systems were, thereafter, explained by the Course Leaders. The proceedings ended with experience sharing by seniors and high tea. Pearl Fashion Institute was set up in Baridhara, Dhaka, in the year 2006, to provide internationally benchmarked education in areas of Apparel Merchandising, Production Management & Fashion Design. The Institute is owned by a multi million dollar, global supply-chain- House of Pearl Fashions Ltd. And is the only RMG related Institute in Bangladesh to receive validation from the prestigious Nottingham Trent University, UK.
International Youth Day Celebrated
THE South Asian Youth Society (SAYS) and American Center, USA Embassy Dhaka, jointly celebrated International Youth Day 2009 at the Archer K. Blood American Center Library of American Center on 13 August. There were around 55 participants from NSU, DU, AIUB, BRAC, NDC, Holy Cross and other public, private universities and colleges. Catherine Hallock, Cultural Affairs Officer of American Center, was present as the Chief Guest. Shamimul Islam from DU, the General Secretary of SAYS, welcomed the participants. A lively presentation on explaining the objectives, vision, mission of SAYS was presented by Towfique Ahmed from NSU, President of SAYS. Later, the executive director of SAYS, Shamir Shehab from NSU, discussed the importance of youth engagement with social activities to address the challenges that Bangladesh is facing and is likely to face in future . He also briefly touched on the International Youth Day theme of 2009 -- “Sustainability: Our Challenge, Our future." In the question and answer session, the participants raised many thought provoking questions concerning different social issues. Catherine Hallock emphasized on leadership and capacity building of the youth.
