Career Summit 2009 @ Chittagong

The MBA Association, University of Chittagong arranged a Career Summit at Hotel Peninsula in Chittagong on 4 September. The event was segmented into several sessions comprising of seminars, discussions, presentations, and job interviews. The programme was chaired by Engineer Mosharraf Hossain, honorable member of the parliament while Prof. Harunur Rashid, the dean of the faculty of Business Administration, University of Chittagong and Prof. M. A. Taher, Chairmen, Department of Management, University of Chittagong, were present as special guests. Mr. Kamal Uddin, the alumnus presided over the day long programme.

In the first session, Dr. Abu Taher, the Chairman of Management Studies Department, University of Chittagong gave a presentation on the topic “Shift in Business Paradigm”. In the second session, Farhana Afrin, Head of HR and Admin, Mobil Jamuna Lubricants Ltd. presented a lively discussion on “Performance Assessment and Development Process,” which was followed by an enthusiastic seminar participated by senior executives from various corporate houses. Mr. Idris, Chief Financial Officer, PHP Group of Companies, M.I. Khasru, Chief Executive Officer, Sanmar Group, Khaled Masud Iqbal, Human Resources Manager, Coats Bangladesh Ltd., Jafar Iqbal, Manager, External Training, Human Resources Div., Brac Bank Ltd, Farhana Afrin, Assistant Manager and Head of HR & Admin, Mobil Jamuna Lubricants Ltd., Naushad Md. Siddiquee, Assistant Manager, Human Resources, Sanmar Group were the main discussants. In the seminar the speakers focused on the current business trends and what should be done by the fresh graduates to cope with rapid change. In the last session Mr. Ejajur Rahman, the Chief Corporate Service Officer of Sanmar Group came up with some encouraging words for the participants.

Meanwhile the graduates dropped their CVs in the booths of the desired corporate houses. The summit was a great opportunity for the fresh graduates to get acquainted with the participating companies and to create a linkage with the corporate culture. Simultaneously the recruiting companies also got a chance to collect some desired employees from a cluster of eligible fresh graduates.

Hajee Danesh University Day Observed

Hajee Danesh Science and Technology University (HSTU) of Dinajpur celebrated 'University Day' amidst festivity on the campus on 11 September commemorating the 10th founding anniversary of the institution. Students, teachers as well as officials gathered at the HSTU premises in the morning. Prime Minister's Adviser on Education Dr Alauddin Ahmed along with other dignitaries including Vice Chancellor of the university formally inaugurated the Day hoisting the national flag. The day was celebrated holding different events including discussions, festival rallies and a fair. The discussion meeting was presided over by Vice Chancellor Professor Md. Afzal Hossain. Professor Alauddin Ahmed attended the programme as chief guest. The discussion meeting was addressed, among others, by State Minister for Land Advocate Mostafizur Rahman, Nurul Islam Sujan, MP, Iqbalur Rahim MP, Monoronjonshil Gopal MP, Sultana Bulbul MP and Prof Syedul Haque Chowdhury. Dr Alauddin said the new education policy should dispel the notion that the vocational education is a medium of education for the poor section of people.

The university was built on 80 acres of land. There are 39 departments, 6 dormitories and a library with about 20,000 books. 137 teachers, 60 officials and 345 staffs are serving at the university. At least 1559 students are studying under the 6 faculties of the university.

Become International Climate Champions

British Council is searching for Bangladeshis aged between 18 and 35 with innovative ideas to raise awareness and find ways of adapting to climate change through a national competition under the project titled 'International Climate Champions'. This is also a great opportunity for some young people to raise their concerns on effects of climate change and represent Bangladesh in global forums and summits, including the up coming United Nations Conference on Climate Change in Copenhagen in December 2009.

The project ICC was officially launched by the British Ministers Ed Miliband and Douglas Alexander at the British High Commission Club recently. Dr Atiq Rahman, UNEP Champions of the Earth 2009 and Executive Director of Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies, was also present as core partners of British Council in implementing this project.

UAP Adjudged Number One Private University in Bangladesh in Webometrics' Ranking

Webometrics, an international organization that ranks universities across the world based on the information available on their Web-pages, have ranked the University of Asia Pacific (UAP) as the no. 1 private university in Bangladesh and only second among all the universities in the country. In their latest ranking, done in July 2009, the UAP held 59th position among all universities in South Asia and was one of the two universities in Bangladesh to be included among the top 6000 universities of the world.

The Webometrics Ranking is published twice a year (January and July), covering more than 17,000 Higher Education Institutions worldwide. Its website describes the ranking criteria as, “Web presence measures the activity and visibility of the institutions and it is a good indicator of impact and prestige of universities. Rank summarizes the global performance of the University, provides information for candidate students and scholars, and reflects the commitment to the dissemination of scientific knowledge.” All members of the UAP are elated and encouraged by the high ranking obtained by the University and are encouraged to put in more hard work to do even better in future.

The UAP, that had a humble beginning in 1996, has at present more than 3000 students in its seven departments, namely: Architecture (Arch), Business Administration (DBA), Civil Engineering (CE), Computer Science & Engineering (CSE), Electrical & Electronic Engineering (EEE), Law & Human Rights (L&HR), and Pharmacy (Pharm). In addition to undergraduate courses, the university has Masters programme in CE, DBA, CSE, L&HR and Pharmacy. The UAP is the first Private University in Bangladesh to have Pharmacy and was the second one to open Architecture faculty. It is also the pioneer among the private universities to start M. Sc (CE) and the only university in the country to offer M Sc (CE) in Earthquake Engineering. Today, thousands of UAP graduates are well-placed in life, pursuing their professional career or higher studies at home and abroad. The UAP is currently located in a number of buildings in Dhanmandi area, but a City Campus is soon to be built in its own 1-acre plot in Green Road, Dhaka.

NSU Pharmacy Department goes global

THE pharmacy department of North South University (NSU) stepped into the global arena when two bright students of 4th year pharmacy (2nd batch), Md. Mohammad Kawsar Sharif and Samiul Alam Rajib participated in several international pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences related conferences, workshops and training programmes. This July, Mohammad Kawsar Sharif was invited to attend an internship programme in pharmaceutical sciences at the College of Pharmacy - University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI, USA, under the supervision of American Pharmacists Association (APhA).

During his work at the college of pharmacy, he got exposure to the pharmacy education, research and practice system, patient care management, patient pharmacotherapy assessment, collaborative drug therapy management, medication therapy management etc. Furthermore, last year in August he was the attendee of the 54th IPSF World Congress in Cluj-Napoca, Romania to represent Bangladesh for the first time in such an important event. There he was invited to conduct a workshop on drug counterfeiting.

Md. Samiul Alam Rajib participated in the 55th International Pharmaceutical Students' Federation (IPSF) - World Congress as an official delegate which took place in Bali, Indonesia from 3 -13 August, 2009. This world congress is the largest get together of pharmacy students in the world. Samiul Alam Rajib presented a scientific poster, which was an original research work of another student of the same department, Mohammad Kawsar Sharif. The title of the poster was “Controlling Infectious Disease in Bangladesh: The epidemiological fact sheet of infectious diseases like tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS; their prevalence and incidence and the identification of potential partners when planning and implementing surveillance systems.'

The Vice Chancellor of North South University, Dr. Hafiz G A Siddiqui called on both these students and congratulated them for their accomplishments and encouraged them for such activities.
