JU students help the underprivileged

Hasibul Haque Sakib

"Teach this triple truth to all: A generous heart, kind speech, and a life of service and compassion are the things which renew humanity.”- Buddha

Students, teachers and staff of the Department of Business Administration, Jahangirnagar University (DBA, JU), took a small initiative of distributing some gifts to three adjacent villages of the campus of Jahangirnagar University in Savar. A big part of the credit goes to M Zobair Hossain, M Ariful Islam Bhuiyan, and Syed Rafiqul Azam of the 16th batch.

With advice from Motiur Rahman Khan of DBA, JU, the team spoke to the local Imams and elderly of the three villages to identify 55 destitute families of Islam Nagar, Sadarpur and Gerua villages that are situated within the Jahangirnagar university campus. Support and financial contribution from DBA, JU added life to this effort. Mohammad Bakhtiar Rana, Nazmul Islam, Monirruzaman Siddique and Arafat Rahman were among the faculties who distributed on behalf of DBA, JU. The team first went to Islamnagar and then to Sadarpur. The final village was Gerua.

We experienced the fun of wandering around the university campus and its bordering areas with our teachers. That joy, however, was nothing compared to seeing all those pleased faces getting special foods for enjoying the special day. The innocent children filled our hearts with their precious and naive smiles. We tried to share the joy with the underprivileged people. Unfortunately, the happiness was not long-lived when the thought of the thousands of deprivers out there arose. The team took the oath of doing something bigger and better in future.

The DBA, JU initiative may not have been much, but it was a beginning to brighter prospects. Let us take the initiative of giving back whatever we can whenever we can to the poor.
