Pharmacy Department of Primeasia University Celebrates Sixth Anniversary

The department of Pharmacy of Primeasia University celebrated its 6th anniversary on 1 October 2009. The slogan of the event was "Good Health Care for the People by Good Pharmacy Practices." Prof. Gias Uddin Ahmad, Vice Chancellor of the university attended the ceremony as the chief guest, while Prof. Syed Rashidul Hossain, Dean of School of Business and Abul Kashem Molla, Registrar of the same university were present as the special guests. Prof. Sk. Feroz Uddin Ahmed, Head of the Department of Pharmacy presided over the ceremonial function. Among others Prof. Md. Khalequzzaman, Head of the Department of Textile Engineering and Prof. Zahid Uddin Mahmud Khan, Head of the Department of Microbiology were also present as the guests of honor in the gathering. Audiences of about 250 faculty members, guardians, students and staffmembers enjoyed the programme.

The speakers discussed the importance of the provision of good pharmacy services in our hospitals and health care centers to ensure good quality health care for our people. Prof. Ahmed stated that as long as graduate pharmacists are not employed in our hospitals and other health institutions like the countries of the world, quality health care to our people cannot be ensured.

 

Discussion meeting on tourism and hospitality management at IUBAT

The College of Tourism and Hospitality Management, International University of Business Agriculture and Technology (IUBAT) arranged a discussion meeting on World Tourism Day-2009 at the Conference Hall. Tourism experts and resource persons from home and abroad underlined comprehensive policy planning and implementation strategy to facilitate large-scale growth of tourism industry in the country. Speakers at the event stressed on Ecotourism and E-Tourism for balancing tourism influx in order to develop a viable tourist sector with greater network, diversified functionaries and improving infrastructure to protect the environment and cultural sustainability. Leo Philips, Visiting Fellow from the UK focused on tourism in England. Sheikh Ershad Hossain, Faculty detailing Ecotourism and E-Tourism for eliminating poverty, opined that every 12 tourists create a new job for the country.

Prof. M Alimullah Miyan, Vice Chancellor of IUBAT speaking as Chief guest claimed IUBAT to be the first to introduce the program of Tourism and Hospitality Management helping prospective students to pursue academic knowledge and professional efficiency in line with global changes. Prof. Aman Ullah, Chair of the Department earlier highlighted the modality of the discussion and evaluated the problems and prospects of tourism.

 

Elizabeth Becker visits IUB

Elizabeth Becker, an award-winning author and journalist, visited the students of the Department of Media and Communication at Independent University, Bangladesh and took part in a discussion on journalism on 1st October. She has reported on international and national affairs for more than three decades as a correspondent for the New York Times and Washington Post. She began her career as a war reporter in Cambodia in 1972. She informed the students as to why it is important for a journalist to stick by the rules while reporting. According to her, all good reporters should have very good sources. Reliable and trustworthy sources are at the heart of good reporting.

Elizabeth Becker further said that a good reporter should be skeptical about what goes on around him/her. She was one of the few women in her times to cover a war. Currently she is writing a book on “Global Impact of Tourism”. She is the author of “When the War Was Over” (1986) a history of modern Cambodia. She won a Robert F. Kennedy citation for this work of hers. She is also the author of the book “America's Vietnam War”.

Harvey Sernovitz, Information Officer, Embassy of USA accompanied Ms. Becker in the program. Dr. G.M Shahidul Alam, Head of the Department, Media and Communication moderated the discussion. Several students and faculty members of the Media and Communication took part in the interactive session. The Vice-Chancellor Dr. Bazlul Mubin Chowdhury and Dr. Nazrul Islam, Director, School of Liberal Arts and Social Science were also present in the discussion.

 

Certificate Awarding Ceremony on Case Study Writing at BOU

Bangladesh Open University (BOU) and Commonwealth of Learning (COL) jointly organized a certificate award and closing ceremony of an international workshop on "Case Study Writing" on 2 October at the conference hall of Bangladesh Open University, Gazipur. Professor Nazrul Islam, Chairman University Grants Commission of Bangladesh, distributed the Certificates among the participants as the Chief Guest. In his address Prof Nazrul Islam stated that BOU should play a bigger role in implementing Vision 2021 and bringing about a digital Bangladesh by emphasizing open and distance learning.

The Vice Chancellor of Bangladesh Open University Professor RIM Aminur Rashid presided over the closing ceremony. The five days workshop lasted from 28 September - 2 October. A total of 24 faculty members from different universities of Srilanka, Pakistan, Jamaica, Guyana, Nigeria, South Africa and Commonwealth of Learning, Canada, and Bangladesh participated in the event. Professor Qazi Mohammad Galib Ahsan, Dean, School of Business, BOU, coordinated the entire workshop.


Leo Youths Bring Primary Health Care to School Kids

THE Leo Club recently observed October Service Week, which is a worldwide endeavour on part of the club. Members of the club marched into the school premises of the Child Haven Pre Cadet School in Lalbagh with Dr Razibul Islam, Dr Tarzia Asma Zafrullah and Dr Shajiul Islam Shohan.

The participants were Leo President Shuvz Khan, Secretaries Nusrat Jahan Smrity and Israt Sawda and the Leo members Hiru Khan, Sumaiya Ahmed, Kazi Shafi Anik, Nahid Hasnat, Tanvir Shuprio, Saiful Islam Shubho, Saifi Samir and many more from the Leo Club of Dhaka Midtown. This programme was funded by the Lions Club. The event involved around 500 students of the school, 15 teachers and 5 staff members. Students from classes 1 to 10, teachers and the staff were given free checkups along with prescriptions as part of the programme. They were also given medicines such as Napa, Vitamin Capsules, C-Vit and many more. M.A.Kashem (PNJF) B-2 Governor, Nazmul Ahsan (MJF), Shafiqul Alam (MJF), Saiful Islam and Masud Alam Majumder from the Lions Club were present in the opening ceremony of the October Service week's primary health programme.

 

Star Campus Drishty School of Debate

The sixth batch of Drishty School of Debate commences from 24 October 2009, designed exclusively for the English medium students of grades seven to twelve. This month-long workshop is an initiative to develop the debating culture in Chittagong. Panel of trainers include world-class debaters from both Dhaka and Chittagong. All interested participants are requested to contact their school authority or to Drishty Chittagong office at the following address. Last date of Registration is 21 October 2009.
