On a Visit to Shajalal Newsprint Industries

An industrial tour of second year students of the Mechanical Department, MIST took place on 24 October 2009 at the Shajalal Newsprint Industries, Meghna Ghat, Sonargaon, Narayangonj. 39 students of ME 06 took part in the tour, accompanied by WG. Cdr. AKM Zahidur Rahman, CC ME 06 and Lt. Cdr. Saidur Rahman, GSO-II, ME Department.

Shahjalal Newsprint Industries is among the largest paper producing industries of the country with a production capacity of 180 tons of paper per day. The industry has its own power plant that runs on gas and produces 15MW of electricity which is used to run the industry. The tour was an enlightening and entertaining experience for the students, as they got a glance of the applications of theoretical studies in the practical working field.



Seminar on Right to Information at EWU

A seminar titled “Right to Information: Our responsibilities and challenges” was organized by YES group-East West University of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) to mark the International Right to Know Day. Held on 1 November at the auditorium of East West University in Mohakhali, Dhaka, the discussants put forward strong demand for effective implementation of Right to Information Law. The Vice Chancellor of East West University, Dr. Mohammed Sharif was present at the programmr as chief guest, while Executive Director of TIB Dr. Iftekharuzzaman was present as key discussant. YES Advisor and Assistant Professor of Business Administration of East West University Engr. Kamrul Hassan was also present at the event. YES members of EWU A.F.M Fahmidur Rahman and Md. Samiul Mueed jointly presented a paper on the issue. The objective of the initiative was to create awareness among youths about Right to Information and to identify the responsibilities and challenges. In his speech, the Executive Director of TIB stressed on the necessity of coming out of the culture of secrecy. Free flow of information is needed for raising quality of life, enhancing the level of people's knowledge and installing them as the proprietor of the state. Others present at the seminar included the teachers and students of EWU, students from various department and halls of University of Dhaka, Stamford University etc.

 

Executive Director of DIIT Visited UFM

On 22 October, 2009 Mohammad Nuruzzaman, Executive Director of Daffodil Institute of IT (DIIT) visited University of Finance and Management (UFM) in Bialystok, one of the top ranked education institutes of the world in Poland. In the meeting Mohammad Nuruzzaman and the Vice Chancellor (Rector) of the University, Professor Dr. Edward Hoœciowicz discussed different issues related to development of education. The Vice Chancellor expressed his deep satisfaction on the movement of Daffodil Education Network, its students' success, different activities which Daffodil Group is taking to promote quality education. He also agreed to provide full support and cooperation to Daffodil's endeavours. From here on, DIIT students will be able to transfer their credits to UFM and get opportunity for higher studies. It is expected that very soon UFM programmes will be offered by DIIT.

 

Debate Competition at Bangladesh University

A debate competition was organized on the occasion of 8th Foundation Day of Bangladesh University on 28 October. Professor Mustafa Kamaluddin, Head of the Department of English, was the moderator. The judges were Prof. Ataur Rahman, Md. Rukanuddin, Ahsan Islam, Sadat Hasan and Ms Sharifunnessa. The topic of the final debate was "The most difficult problem confronting education in Bangladesh is the lack of modern scientific knowledge." Team Anacondas comprising members Md. Murad Hossain, Alamin and Sajib Fakir emerged the winners of the competition, while Team Rhinos comprising members Arefin Ahsan, Boloy Kumar Das and Sayeda Yasmin were the runners-up.

 

NSU hosted ACM- ICPC 2009, Fudan of China champions and BUET second

The ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ACM-ICPC) 2009, Asia Regional Dhaka Site Event, the world's largest computer programming competition hosted by North South University (NSU), ended with Fudan University of China as the winner, and BUET securing the second position out of a total of 90 teams. The Prize Awarding Ceremony of ACM-ICPC 2009 Asia Regional Dhaka Site Event was held on 24 October 2009 at the NSU campus at Bashundhara. Dr. Tawfiq-e-Elahi, Advisor to the Prime Minister was present at the Award Ceremony as the Chief Guest. Mr. M.A. Kashem, Chairman, NSU Foundation was present as Special Guest and Dr. Hafiz G.A. Siddiqi, Vice Chancellor of NSU was present as Guest of Honor. Dr. SAM Khairul Bashar, Pro Vice Chancellor, Dr. Abul L Haque, Director, ACM-ICPC 2009 Dhaka Site, Professor M. Kaykobad and Dr. Miftahur Rahman were also present among others at the event.

The speakers at the closing ceremony thanked the participants, coaches, and officials for making the event successful and mentioned the rapid growth of information and communication technology in the country and the growing interest of the students in this sector. Bangladesh has the potential for development, production and export of software and a contest such as this offers a chance to test knowledge and skills of budding local programmers.

 

 

Certificate Awarding Ceremony in Disaster Management at BRAC

The Postgraduate Programme in Disaster Management (PPDM) of BRAC University organized certificate awarding ceremony for the students of Fall 2007 and Fall 2008 who successfully completed the Certificate Programme in Disaster Management. The Programme was held on November 2, 2009 at BRAC Centre Inn. Altogether 14 students were awarded the certificates who are mostly officials from different government and non-government agencies. Honorable Minister for the Ministry of Food and Disaster Management, Dr. Muhammad Abdur Razzaque MP attended the programme as the Chief Guest. His Excellency Robert McDougall, High Commissioner of Canada in Bangladesh was also present at the event as the Special Guest and Professor Jamilur Reza Choudhury, Vice Chancellor of BRAC University chaired the session. the programme started with the welcome note and a brief presentation on PPDM by Professor Fuad H Mallick, Director, PPDM. This was followed by speeches from the Chief Guest, Special Guest and the Chair respectively. Finally the Chief Guest handed over the certificates to the awardees.

Taking into consideration the emerging needs of the country, BRAC University has been working through the PPDM to create qualified disaster management professionals since the year 2005 and so far more than 50 students have completed the certificate, diploma and masters level education from here.

 

 

Prof. M. Shamsher Ali receives Lifetime Achievement Award 2009

The Selection Committee of the International University Leadership Colloquium of Malaysia has unanimously chosen Prof. M. Shamsher Ali, Vice Chancellor, Southeast University and President, Bangladesh Academy of Sciences as recipient of the award of “Lifetime Educational Leadership”. The Asia Colloquium Organizing Committee invited Dr. Ali to be their Special Guest with a view to offering him the award at the First International University Leadership Colloquium for the Asia Pacific Region to be held during 7-11 November, 2009 at Penang, Malaysia. The award ceremony will be held during the EDS International Welcoming Dinner for third international delegates at Pinang Peranakan Mansion on Saturday, 7 November in Penang, Malaysia. The Right Honorable Chief Minister of Penang is expected to present this award to Dr. Ali.

 

IBA - JU begins its journey

Department of Business Administration, Jahangirnagar University recently transformed into a separate institution: Institute of Business Administration. Business Administration of Jahangirnagar University is the first to start a BBA Undergraduate Program in Bangladesh in 1991. This transformation was therefore long overdue. The BBA program is designed to broaden the student's knowledge, to provide in depth study, and to complement theoretical study with relevant and significant practical exposure. Many of the students who have passed from here are now occupying respected positions in different banks, multinational organizations etc. Students Association, Business Club, Cultural Club, Debating Club, Movie Club, Sports Club are the media through which students share their ideas, thoughts and organize special events.
