Sunshine Celebrates 25th
Founding Anniversary

Tabassum Mokhduma

THIS year on 14 January, Sunshine Grammar School and College, the first English Medium institute in Chittagong to offer O and A Level education and examinations, celebrated its 25th founding anniversary. The colourful programmes welcoming their 26th year was marked by saluting the valiant freedom fighters of our nation and recognizing their contribution in the creation of our beloved country Bangladesh.

The motto of the school since its inception in 1985 has been to make the world a better place to live in by protecting it from the destructive demons. Thus the students of Sunshine have always been motivated to work on the theme 'Let Us Save Our Earth' which they have been doing through offering free education for the underprivileged children, free health care, community services, raising funds for the disadvantaged etc. This year, the vow taken by the students is to raise awareness on the unhealthy practice of taking drugs and smoking by the people of our country. Various steps have already been taken to work on this purpose and stretching the helping hand to the victims of drugs and smoke.

The official anniversary celebration commenced on the pleasant winter morning of 14 January 2010 at the school campus with the recitation from the Holy Quran and Tafsir. This was followed by salutation to the Special Guests - the freedom fighters, by presenting a factual play on the War of Liberation. Besides, patriotic songs were rendered along with a dance on the song 'Shob kota janal khule dao na' performed by Prema Das Gupta of class XII. Later Suha Karim of class X expressed the views of today's youngsters as they envisage the War of Liberation and the freedom fighters. The freedom fighters expressed their satisfaction at the beliefs and confidence of the youngsters of today, especially those going to English Medium Schools. The freedom fighters proudly mentioned that they would speak about the students of this institution to the government authorities and request them to organise such programmes in every English Medium School of the country so that each child of this country learns to respect the martyrs and honour the valiant freedom fighters who are still alive.

Religious scholars coming from Sufi School of Thoughts, Ram Krishna Mission, Buddhist Temple and Catholic Church also expressed their optimism by telling the students that they were confident that the Sunshiners will become future leaders and fulfill their dreams.

Later, a peace walk by the Sunshiners also took place in the city, which was inaugurated by the Mayor of Chittagong City Corporation ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury. He also wished the students a bright future. Safia Ghazi Rahman, the founding Principal of Sunshine Grammar School and College, and its sister concern Chittagong Sunshine School and Chattagram Sunshine College (the first college to start HSC in English Medium under the Chittagong Board of Education) expressed her gratitude to everyone involved with Sunshine. She further wished and prayed for the success of every student in Bangladesh.
