Club Fair of spring-2010 held at BRAC University

The BRAC University Rural Development Club (BURDC) organized the Club Fair of Spring-2010 at the university recently.

Professor Jamilur Reza Choudhury, Vice Chancellor of BRAC University, inaugurated the daylong fair as chief guest. Professor Golam Samdani Fakir, Pro-Vice Chancellor of the university, Ishfaque Ilahi Chowdhury, Professor Zainab Faruqui Ali, Director of Students Affairs of BU, were also present attheoccasion. The theme of this semester's fair was 'Sobujer Hatchhani, Firiyea Dao Se Oronnoya, Lou A Nagar', (Appeal for Green, Give back that forest and take away this town).

Addressing the inaugural ceremony, Professor Jamilur Reza Choudhury said arranging this kind of fair proves that the students of BRAC University are also involved in extra-curricular activities side by side their scheduled study. These clubs also help the students to express their innovative knowledge and creative thought. Some 30 clubs and forums working at the university had setup stalls in the fair to display their activities and products.

Star Campus - Drishty Brainstorming

A business case solving competition is to be organised by Drishty Chittagong in collaboration with Star Campus, a weekly supplement of The Daily Star. This contest will be first of its kind in Chittagong. The competition will include case studies, business plan presentation, and branding challenges, targeting students of schools and universities. Program schedule: workshop 12 February 2010 at Regional Public Administration Training Centre auditorium. Competition: 16 February (school level); 20 February (university level) 23 Feb: Final competition at Hotel Agrabad. The deadline for registration is 9 February 2010. Premier Show of Hey Ananta Punya at Daffodil International University

The Premier Show of the Dance Drama 'Hey Ananta Punya' based on poem 'Notir Puja and Pujarini' of Rabrindranath Tagore was held recently at Daffodil International University Auditorium. Organized by the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication of Daffodil International University the function was addressed among others by Lalon Researcher Professor Abul Ahsan Chowdhury, Cultural Researcher Dr. Fazlul Alam, Lubna Morium- General Secretary of Sadhona, Dance Director-Wardda Rehab, and Video Director Arif Rassel. The function was presided over by Kamrun Nahar, Head of the Department. The story of a dancer named Shrimoti has been nicely portrayed in it.

 

Seminar on 'Contemporary Poetry' at Southern University

Department of English of Southern University Bangladesh (SUB), Chittagong, organized a monthly seminar on 'Contemporary Poetry' at the SUB campus recently. The seminar was presided over by the Departmental Head of English, Professor A.Z.M. Shamsuzzaman Khan, while SUB Vice-Chancellor Professor A.J.M. Nuruddin Chowdhury and Professor M. Sharifuzzaman, Pro-Vice Chancellor of SUB graced the event as chief guest and special guest respectively. Shafin Muhammad John, Lecturer in Dept of English, presented the keynote paper titled 'A Typical Bond Between Man and Nature in Contemporary Poetry', where he dwelt on the new poetic responses to nature in Contemporary Poems. He said contemporary poets have assimilated and reformulated the concerns and conceits of traditional nature of poetry. And it (nature) is now a pressing political question, a question of survival. Ishrat Jahan, student of 5th semester, Dept of English, recited a poem of Robert Frost. A discussion session was also held at the second phase of the event. Amongst others, Asst Professor Ishrat Jahan, Head, Dept of General Education and faculty members and students of Dept of English were present on the occasion.

 

 

Seminar on Development and Democracy at JU

A daylong seminar on 'Development and Democracy in Bangladesh: Commitment, Reality and Potential' was held at the central auditorium also known as Zahir Rihan Audutorium of JU on Jan 27. Department of Economics, JU and Bangladesh Development Forum, Germany jointly organized the seminar.

Presided over by renowned economist Anu Mohammad, Chairman of the Department of Economics and JU Vice Chancellor delivered welcome speech while economist Dr Anisur Rahaman, former member of planning commission, also former Professor of Department of Economics, Dhaka University and Dr Nasim Akhter Hossain, Professor of Government and Politics of JU spoke on the topic.

Dr Kabir said development is not only the growth of capital and technology but also development of the whole nation. Being a developing country our traditional politics has always kept aside people's participation institutionally. Participatory politics and political transparency could help in the nation's development process.

Terming development as growth with equity Dr Anisur Rahaman said since independence this remains yet to be implemented.

In order to have skilled human resources he urged all concerned to take all-out measures reforming structures, redistributing assets, reforming agrarian society and ensuring literacy to masses. Dr Nasim Akhter Hossain said that our democracy was western in style and because of poverty masses cannot take part in nation building.

 


CUDS Debate workshop 2010

Like every year, Chittagong University Debating Society (CUDS) is going to organise month long debate workshop, targeting fresher students of the university, from February 14 to March 18, 2010.Renowned debaters, teachers, researchers will take classes on varied debate related issues in the debate workshop. The registration of debate workshop will be on till February 14. Training the novice debaters is the key objective of the workshop. Professor Abu Yusuf honourable vice-chancellor of Chittagong University inaugurated the programme.

Master Saalim Saadman Araf is receiving First Prize from Abul Kalam Azad, Chief Guest and Honorable Minister of Information of Government of Bangladesh in the Annual Prize Giving Ceremony 2008-2009 of Southpoint School & College, Dhaka. Chairman of the Managing Committee, Engr. M.A. Rashid and Founder Principal, Hamida Ali were also present in the ceremony.

"Healthy campus"

The concept of "Healthy campus" was introduced by Dr. Towhida Rashid, Associate Professor, Dept. of Geography and Environment, University of Dhaka. The programme aims to create clean environment. At the introductory session on 27 January 2010, students from different academic year of the dept. enjoyed a friendly conversation with Dr. Towhida. She said that initially the dept. would focus on indoor plantation and waste management. Trash boxes of different color will be placed in order to separate the waste.

ABI-USA Gold medal for Bangladeshi physician

Prof. Dr. M. Alamgir Chowdhury, Professor and Head of ENT Department, Medical College for Women & Hospital, Uttara, Dhaka, has been awarded 'Gold Medal for Bangladesh2009 from American Biographical Institute for his outstanding contributions in medical services. Prof. Chowdhury is an International Fellow of American Academy of Otolaryngolory - Head & Neck Surgery. Dr. Chowdhury has many research publications in national and international medical journals. He participated and presented papers in various seminar, symposium, and conferences in USA, Canada, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, India and Nepal.

Prof. Alamgir has been organizing Kids ENT Health, World Voice Day and Head Neck Cancer awareness week every year for the last five years in Bangladesh.
