Young Economists' Forum of North South University launches 'Reading Circle'

Prometheus Siddiqui

North South University launched a 'Reading Circle' on the 6 February 2010. Young Economists' Forum is a club with a vision to provide students with a platform that enables them to put their academics in to action, be it through their writing or their voices. Students are empowered to put theories to test, and hence the tag line of YEF reads, where theories come to life…

The rigorous semester system that persists seldom provides students the opportunity to venture into books that have shaped their academic fields. In a bid to expose its members to the history of the tradition that Economics has, YEF launched the 'Reading Circle', where contributions from leading exponents in the field of Economics and Politics would be closely inspected. The aim of the circle is to have students from different academic backgrounds read books and see how ideas from the present times and the past have shaped Economics.

The book that has been chosen this semester is 'Ten Great Economists' by Joseph Alois Schumpeter. The reason for choosing this book was the fact that with the exception of Karl Marx, the author personally met and knew nine of the ten Economists. The ten Economists include Marx, Walras, Menger, Marshall, Pareto, Böhm-Bawerk, Taussig, Fisher, Mitchell, and Keynes. Hence, the readers would be able to get a short but dazzling glimpse of economic theory up to the time of the book being published by Oxford University Press in 1951.
