Amar Ekushey observed at JU

AMAR Ekushey and International Mother Language Day was observed at Jahangirnagar University with due solemnity.

At 12.01am Vice Chancellor of the University Dr. Sharif Enamul Kabir along with JU Pro VCs and others teachers hoisted a black flag and placed wreaths at the University central Sahid Minar to pay tribute to the language martyrs of the country.

Late, Teachers Association, Officers Club, journalists association, several departments, halls, social- Cultural organizations of the university and different schools, colleges and organization placed wreaths. In the morning a Probhat ferry led by JU VC was held at the campus. Teachers and students of JU School and college attended the ferry.

Different cultural organizations and campus administration arranged cultural and discussion programmes on the occasion. A drawing competition of children was also held at the new arts faculty building. JU VC inaugurated and distributed prizes among the participants.

US film maker urges Bangladeshi filmmakers to create 'authentic' Bangladeshi films

ACCLAIMED US film maker and screenwriter Eric J. Adams conducted a film making workshop entitled "Story, Structure and Screenwriting" on Last Wednesday (17 February) hosted by the Bangladesh Institute of Journalism and Electronic Media (BIJEM). Conducting the workshop he said "There has never been a better time for independent Bangladeshi film makers as the world is thirsting for fresh voices from emerging countries. Due to new technology, the cost of making films has dropped tremendously, but filmmakers must remember to develop and tell great stories if they want their films to stand above the crowd.” He encouraged participants to collaborate with fellow film makers to capture the untold stories of Bangladesh in film.

BIJEM executive director Mirza Tarequl Qader said in his concluding speech, "This workshop was a tremendous success and indicative of the vibrancy of the Dhaka film community." A total of 52 Bangladeshi leading independent and short film makers, producers, cinematographers and screen writers participated in the workshop.

Eric was accompanied by his wife, Kathleen Adams, a noted psychotherapist, with whom he has collaborated on numerous creative projects. Ms Kyra A. Buchko of USA was also present.

It may be mentioned here that Adams most recently produced and have co-written the independent feature film 'My Suicide,' winner of seventeen major film awards, including the Crystal Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival.

BRAC University bids farewell to Prof Jamilur Reza Choudhury

BRAC University (BRACU) bade farewell to its first Vice Chancellor Professor Jamilur Reza Choudhury through a function at its Indoor Games Room on Monday. BRACU Pro-VC Professor Dr. Md. Golam Samdani Fakir, BU Governing Body members Professor Dr. Anisuzzaman, Faruque Ahmed Choudhury, Professor Ainun Nishat also addressed the farewell ceremony. Professor Golam Samdani Fakir in his speech said Professor Jamilur Reza Choudhury (JRC) has turned the BRAC University into one of the few leading and high quality private universities in the country by virtue of his dynamic leadership, time befitting guidance, well strategic plan and innovative knowledge in running an organization. Terming Jamilur Reza Choudhury a self-enlightened person, Professor Samdani said not only he himself is a great personality but also has made many to be great with his sublime touch.

Dr. Anisuzzaman said Professor JRC has a special quality through which he can easily interact with others and attract them towards him. Professor Ainun Nishat said JRC is a true patriot and a salient son of the country. “Being a world recognized construction engineer, well reputed researcher and versatile academician, he never thinks of going abroad for the better interest of his motherland,” he added. Faruq Chowdhury hoped that the relation that has been developed between Professor JRC and BRAC University would never end though BRAC University has offered a formal farewell to him. He also hoped that BRACU would get the cooperation from JRC in future whenever needed.

Professor Jamilur Reza Choudhury in his speech recollected his memories of the days at BRAC and assured continuation of his cooperation to BRACU any time. Members of BRAC University Governing Board and Academic Council, chairpersons of different departments, faculty members, staff, students and BRACU Alumni members also attended the farewell ceremony which was followed by a cultural programme.

Professor Jamilur Reza Choudhury joined BRAC University as its first Vice Chancellor on 1st March in 2001.

 

Hafizur Rahman Memorial Award 2010

HAFIZUR Rahman Memorial Award, a recognition to people who work for common masses to make a change in their life. The presentation ceremony of the Hafizur Rahman Memorial Award 2010 was held on 23 January 2010 at R.C. Majumder Arts Auditorium. The Vice Chancellor of the University of Dhaka, Dr. A.A.M.S. Arefin Siddique graced the occasion as chief guest while the honorable patrons of the scholarship, renowned Economists, Dr Anisur Rahman and Dr. Aminur Rahman were present as special guests. Dr. Nasrin khondokar, Chairman of the Department of Economics, DU presided over the ceremony and Professor M. M. Akash delivered the vote of thanks. Hafizur Rahman was a renowned Economist who was a student of 1st batch of Department of Economics, DU. In Remembrance, this award was introduced in 2006, and this year it was given to Nazrul Islam, a 2nd year student of Dept. of Economics, DU for his social work in his local area. The event was alive with presentation by participants and response from the audience.

International Mother Language Day held at Coffee World and Pizza Corner

21st February is a remarkable day for all Bangladeshis all over the world. The significance of this day is immense. Pizza Corner and Coffee World, concerns of Etcetera Bangladesh Private Ltd., organized a children’s 'Painting Competition' at its Dhanmondi outlet on 21st February to commemorate International Mother Language Day. The competition was supplemented by a workshop on 19 February conducted by Syed Abul Barq Alvi, a renowned artist and Professor of Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka. The competition was divided into two groups; children from 5-8 years in one group 'Kids' and 9-12 years in the group 'Youth'. Around 76 students from 10 schools took part in the workshop and competition.

The organizers and the parents believe that this competition has contributed in nurturing painting skills of children in the specified age groups, and participants have acquired adequate painting insight in a competitive and exciting enviroment.


Career Seminar for United International University Students

PROTHOM-alojobs.com, the leading job portal of Bangladesh organized a seminar on 'Effective Presentation Skills & Motivation for Career Success' at the United International University Campus. A large number of students and job seekers attended the Seminar. Quazi M. Ahmed, Management Consultant and Career Specialist discussed the various aspects of 'Effective Presentation Skill' for the young people. Jishu Tarafder, another management consultant enlightened the audience by narrating the importance of motivation. Riyad Hossain, Chief Operating Officer, Prothom-alojobs.com moderated the Seminar.
